Stuff I want to see today:

The end of this game. I have a appointment from 4:40 to 6, I really hope I can see the end of the game.

Grant Balfour vs. the Fenway Fans. Oh boy...

Varitek strikes out (I do this only so that I have a certainty that I will see one of these)

Crowd shot of Johnny Pesky

Crowd shot of Doug Flutie

Deep in extras, Tito decides to have J.D. Drew pitch instead of Mike Timlin. There is no noticable difference between the two.

Papi being Papi

A good majority of you Red Sox fans stick around for the NLCS game, as opposed to the handful that showed up yesterday. It just isn't the same without you guys.

Ew, Alex Cora is starting at SS.
   3. Joe C isn't Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:23 PM (#2980641)
Ew, Alex Cora is starting at SS.

Hey, at least it's not Lugo.
   4. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:27 PM (#2980644)
I'm sure Cora is something stupid like 2 for 3 in his career against Garza or something.
   5. Dan Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:30 PM (#2980646)
Actually, both Cora and Lowrie are 0-3 vs. Garza, although Lowrie did strike out once. Clearly that makes all the difference.
   6. aleskel Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:30 PM (#2980647)
I think Matt Garza suffers from Javy Vasquez Disease - he looks unhittable for several innings, has one inning where the wheels come off and he gives up a bunch of runs, then goes back to being unhittable for the rest of his outing.
   7. tfbg9 Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:34 PM (#2980648)
I'm at work, with a TV just to my left.
Afternoon boys. Good luck Rays.
   8. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:39 PM (#2980650)
I've got a TV in front of me and a pepper roasting in the oven. Only one of these is actually relevant to this game.
   9. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:40 PM (#2980651)
The pepper?
   10. Dan Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:40 PM (#2980652)
That was quick.
   11. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:40 PM (#2980653)
Well that was a ######## of a start.
   12. Bunny Vincennes Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:41 PM (#2980654)
Wow, a four pitch first. Damn!
   13. Al Kaline Trio Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:42 PM (#2980657)
Perfect game in 36 pitches? The answer in 2 hours!
   14. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:42 PM (#2980658)
I will happily accept a 5-pitch first inning.
   15. aleskel Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:42 PM (#2980659)
whoa, gameday has Lester throwing 95-97. Has he always had that much fastball?
   16. Dan Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:43 PM (#2980661)
No, even in April he was only low 90s.
   17. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:44 PM (#2980662)
Another sterling effort from Ellsbury.
   18. aleskel Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:45 PM (#2980663)
has he gone Kenny Rogers on us? Look for the smudge!
   19. Dan Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:45 PM (#2980664)
He's been throwing that hard since around June or July.
   20. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:46 PM (#2980665)
####, I thought that was gone.
   21. Dan Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:47 PM (#2980666)
That's a HR anywhere else, no?
   22. IJason Varitek Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:47 PM (#2980667)
Ugh. Killed by the wind. Don't waste it.
   23. Mattbert Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:48 PM (#2980668)
Chippy sure thought it was out.
   24. aleskel Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:48 PM (#2980671)
what's the game 4 matchup? Wakefield v. Sonnenstine?
   25. Dan Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:48 PM (#2980673)
Yes.
   26. tfbg9 Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:50 PM (#2980674)
Lassus?
   27. Dan Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:52 PM (#2980676)
Squander!
   28. Al Kaline Trio Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:53 PM (#2980678)
I suggest taking some pitches this inning.
   29. Bunny Vincennes Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:54 PM (#2980679)
That's funny, Mattbert. I sometimes call my girlfriend "Chippy."
   30. The Marksist Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:55 PM (#2980680)
whoa, gameday has Lester throwing 95-97. Has he always had that much fastball?

Gameday had Garza working at 96. I thought that was his top?
   31. aleskel Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:55 PM (#2980681)
I wish I wasn't at work, I like seeing Youkilis' reaction to every time he makes out. Did he grimace and mutter something to himself? Did he burst out an angry shout? I'll never know ...
   32. aleskel Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:56 PM (#2980682)
Gameday had Garza working at 96. I thought that was his top?

that sounds right - I seem to remember him being 92-96 midseason
   33. The Marksist Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:57 PM (#2980683)
lester with his first ball of the night
   34. Dan Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:57 PM (#2980685)
Good job dropping it, Tek.
   35. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:57 PM (#2980686)
Varitek, can you please catch a foul tip at some point?
   36. The Marksist Posted: October 13, 2008 at 04:58 PM (#2980689)
there goes the perfect game
   37. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:01 PM (#2980691)
I think I've seen Garza hit 98 a couple times but it's pretty rare. Generally his top velocity is about 96.
   38. Bunny Vincennes Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:01 PM (#2980692)
Tek. Ugh. The Red Sox are going to have a very delicate situation on their hands when they have to part ways there.
   39. Dan Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:01 PM (#2980693)
In the ALDS Gameday had Garza at 98-99 on a few pitches.
   40. Dan Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:03 PM (#2980694)
What the ####, Varitek?
   41. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:03 PM (#2980695)
Come the #### on Varitek, you need to catch that.
   42. Mattbert Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:03 PM (#2980696)
WTF, Craptain?
   43. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:03 PM (#2980697)
#### you Tek. That run is on you.
   44. Mattbert Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:04 PM (#2980699)
Great, that would've been an inning-ending two ball.
   45. IJason Varitek Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:04 PM (#2980701)
Brutal postseason for Tek.

"Rays manufacture a run" - how, exactly, did the Rays make Tek miss that ball?
   46. The Marksist Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:05 PM (#2980702)
That sucks. We were gonna have to score to win the game anyway, though.
   47. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:06 PM (#2980703)
I ####### hate Vagitek - he will surely cost us the ALCS this year - what a useless #### - no wonder his wife left him.
   48. Chip Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:08 PM (#2980704)
At least Varitek can make up for his increasingly poor defense with his bat.

Oh, wait ....
   49. Al Kaline Trio Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:08 PM (#2980705)
Wow angry words although I do agree he's not much of a catch.
   50. Chip Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:10 PM (#2980706)
Strike zone getting wider and wider for Garza.
   51. Chip Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:11 PM (#2980707)
Bay right on the 2-1 pitch.
   52. Bunny Vincennes Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:12 PM (#2980708)
What exactly IS Teck doing well these days?

Phil Coorey! How goes it down under?
   53. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:12 PM (#2980709)
FISTED
   54. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:13 PM (#2980710)
Kotsay wasn't useless for once!
   55. Dan Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:13 PM (#2980712)
Hey, look who's up with a chance to make up for his ###### in the top half. Too bad he's going to K.
   56. Chip Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:14 PM (#2980713)
What exactly IS Teck doing well these days?

Signalling for the standup fastball.
   57. The Ghost of Sox Fans Past Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:14 PM (#2980714)
Baldelli looked a little tentative picking that up; might have held Kotsay at first with a more aggressive play.
   58. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:14 PM (#2980715)
Um...did they NOT SEE how Varitek singlehandedly created Tampa's run that inning?
   59. Chip Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:15 PM (#2980716)
That's good, swing at a pitch you can't get on top of. Idiot.
   60. Bunny Vincennes Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:15 PM (#2980717)
So the radio guys just said that Tek feels betrayed by being pinch-hit for? Um, he can't hit. AND, they are carrying three catchers for whatever reason.
   61. Mattbert Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:16 PM (#2980718)
I thought Varitek's wife left him because he was banging Heidi Watney. Not so?
   62. Chip Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:16 PM (#2980719)
Just ####### put a ball in play.
   63. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:16 PM (#2980720)
Thanks for playing, Tek.
   64. Al Kaline Trio Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:16 PM (#2980721)
You guys do realize he's a 36 year old catcher right?
   65. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:16 PM (#2980722)
I ####### HATE THE ####

HE WILL COST US EVERYTHING THIS YEAR
   66. El Hombre 4 MVP (Le Samourai) Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:16 PM (#2980723)
Sup, Tek.
   67. Chip Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:17 PM (#2980724)
You are pathetic. Absolutely ####### pathetic.

Another wide strike. But no way he should have been taking.
   68. tfbg9 Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:17 PM (#2980725)
Lassus?
   69. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:17 PM (#2980726)
So this is going to be one of those games.
   70. The Ghost of Sox Fans Past Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:18 PM (#2980727)
Dammit, Varitek, get 'em in.
   71. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:18 PM (#2980728)
That pitch that Tek struck out on was a strike. I don't particularly care for their K-Zone dealie.
   72. Dan Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:18 PM (#2980729)
Only 3 runners left in scoring position from 1 out in 2 innings.
   73. Chip Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:18 PM (#2980730)
Oh good, the guy with no power puts a ball in the air.
   74. PJ Martinez Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:18 PM (#2980732)
um, e*trade ads fall pretty flat these days, don't they?
   75. mack Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:18 PM (#2980733)
Please get me a catcher that's alive.
   76. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:18 PM (#2980734)
HOLY CRAP HONG KONG IS IN CHINA?
   77. Al Kaline Trio Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:18 PM (#2980736)
Has anybody noticed that Garza's photo on Yahoo gamechannel looks like a cross between Sloth from Goonies and a Jack-O-Lantern?
   78. tfbg9 Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:18 PM (#2980737)
And twice we've been burned by bad calls 2-2, w/RISP...
   79. Textbook Editor Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:18 PM (#2980739)
I, for one, can't wait for the Jason Varitek Era to be over. Unless he's willing to be a backup at $3-4 million a year, I don't want him back.
   80. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:19 PM (#2980740)
You guys do realize he's a 36 year old catcher right?

He's making errors I would not forgive a 45 year old catcher for
   81. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:20 PM (#2980741)
Rays manufacture a run" - how, exactly, did the Rays make Tek miss that ball?

In the same way the Red Sox manufactured runs in the first game by hitting a check swing double and making Crawford miss that sliding catch!
   82. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:20 PM (#2980742)
Phil Coorey! How goes it down under?

Anger at present mate
   83. Al Kaline Trio Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:22 PM (#2980743)
Eat a kebab they always make you feel better.
   84. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:22 PM (#2980744)
Oh, good.
   85. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:23 PM (#2980745)
If it was for any reason other than the current situation then I'd be sorry to hear that, Phil.
   86. Chip Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:23 PM (#2980746)
I don't understand why they continue to pitch Iwamura away, when he's done that several times this year against them, including a couple of HRs.
   87. Textbook Editor Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:25 PM (#2980748)
So... Our hopes may rest on Wakefield and Matsusaka. Wonderful. Glad Tito managed with House Money in Game 2; it certainly was a game that didn't matter.

And yes, someone's going to accuse me of the two words beginning with P and P, but I've been stewing since Sunday morning about 1:40 am and I haven't stopped. We win Game 2 and the Rays roll over in 4 or 5. The way Tito managed that game will burn me up for a good long time.
   88. Chip Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:25 PM (#2980749)
Now Lester benefits from the wide zone on the 2-0 to Upton.
   89. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:25 PM (#2980750)
Christ.
   90. PJ Martinez Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:25 PM (#2980751)
yikes
   91. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:25 PM (#2980752)
Upton! Holy crap I can't wait for next season when his shoulder is fully repaired.
   92. Mattbert Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:26 PM (#2980753)
Poop.
   93. Fly's New Handle Was Too Long, But Clever Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:26 PM (#2980754)
Congratulations to the 2008 World Champion Tampa Rays.
   94. Dan Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:26 PM (#2980755)
Damn that ball was destroyed.
   95. El Hombre 4 MVP (Le Samourai) Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:26 PM (#2980756)
Wow, that was a moonshot.
   96. The Ghost of Sox Fans Past Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:26 PM (#2980757)
OK, I have concluded that Skip Carey is biased for the Rays.
   97. Textbook Editor Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:26 PM (#2980758)
FWIW, I typed in #87 before the HR. Hope Wakefield has his "A" game, or we're in trouble.
   98. mack Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:26 PM (#2980759)
and we are now toast
damn
   99. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:26 PM (#2980760)
Remember that 4-pitch first inning? Anyone?
   100. Dan Posted: October 13, 2008 at 05:26 PM (#2980761)

Oh, I agree with that 100%.
