Timmy Wake, I've always believed in you, always trusted you to come up big in the biggest
spots--just one more time baby, that's all, just one more clutch performance.
Its not too much to ask for, is it? After all, I'm your biggest fan!
   2. Gamingboy Posted: October 14, 2008 at 03:21 PM (#2981705)
Stuff I want to see:

Knuckleballer (check)

BJ Upton goes deep again. Reggie Jackson is still not impressed.

Balfour!

Papi goes deep, just to show that he isn't completely De-Papized

I woke up this morning and upon noting the time on my clock my first thought of the day was irritation that it was over 13 hours until the game.

JD batting leadoff, Ellsbury sits:

Drew
Pedroia
Ortiz
Youkilis
Bay
Kotsay
Crisp
Cash
Lowrie

That's... interesting. Crisp 7th is... sub-optimal, I think, but now he'll get 3 hits to prove me wrong.
   5. Dan Posted: October 14, 2008 at 05:51 PM (#2981835)
Rays running out an interesting lineup:

2B Iwamura
CF Upton
1B Peña
3B Longoria
LF Crawford
DH Aybar
C Navarro
RF Perez
SS Bartlett
   6. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 14, 2008 at 05:57 PM (#2981838)
The switch-hitters will probably be batting right-handed against Wakefield again.
   7. PJ Martinez Posted: October 14, 2008 at 06:23 PM (#2981847)
Drew
Pedroia
Ortiz
Youkilis
Bay

That's pretty good. Papi's not hitting like a #3 guy, but at least this way he's surrounded by righties. The other four are the four best bats right now, obviously.
   8. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 14, 2008 at 07:30 PM (#2981873)
I think Crisp is batting 7th to maximize his speed - if he were batting 9th, he'd be less likely to run in front of Drew.
   9. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 14, 2008 at 07:31 PM (#2981874)
I like that the five best bats on the team are batting 1-5.
   10. Rafael Bellylard (p8p) Posted: October 14, 2008 at 07:41 PM (#2981880)
On which team?
   11. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: October 14, 2008 at 07:55 PM (#2981886)
Finally Ellsbury sits
   12. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:02 PM (#2981888)
I am oddly confident that the Sox will take this one. I don't even know why.
   13. Dan Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:03 PM (#2981890)
I am oddly confident that the Sox will take this one. I don't even know why.

Maybe because Wakefield has gotten lit up by the Rays in his last few starts vs them, and Sonnanstine pitched 14 innings with 1 UER allowed over his 2 September starts vs. Boston?
   14. The Drizz1e Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:06 PM (#2981891)
Sager trying to look more dignified tonight I see.
   15. IJason Varitek Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:07 PM (#2981892)
What is that, velvet? That's beautiful!
   16. Rafael Bellylard (p8p) Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:08 PM (#2981893)
He looks like the MC at a strip club.
   17. PJ Martinez Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:08 PM (#2981894)
For once I'm not sorry that Wakefield pitching = backup catcher starting.
   18. Darren Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:08 PM (#2981895)
It's quite arguable that Papi in his current form is not one of our top 5 hitters. I'd think Crisp could certainly run in front of Drew, who takes a lot of pitches and doesn't hit for much power lately. .

Nice suit Sager, nice catch Cash.
   19. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:08 PM (#2981896)
Good swing there from Iwamura.
   20. Darren Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:09 PM (#2981897)
Wake got that strikeout because tfbg9 believed in him.
   21. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:09 PM (#2981899)
That at bat was...less good for us.
   22. tfbg9 Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:09 PM (#2981900)
Ugh.
   23. Darren Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:09 PM (#2981901)
Ugh, that didn't look good. Got squeezed on the first pitch, I thought.
   24. tfbg9 Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:10 PM (#2981902)
Helpless.
   25. Darren Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:10 PM (#2981903)
What would it take to get Casey in the lineup? I like him better in general and better against this pitcher.

Wow, that was ridiculous.
   26. Darren Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:11 PM (#2981904)
Generous is right. That was wide.
   27. Dan Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:11 PM (#2981905)
Over/under on steals for the Rays tonight? 5?
   28. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:11 PM (#2981906)
The Rays have been surprisingly unaggressive on the bases considering the circumstances this series, hopefully that will change tonight.
   29. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:11 PM (#2981907)
That was also...not good.
   30. Christi Chung Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:11 PM (#2981908)
yeah, it's already two nothing
   31. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:11 PM (#2981909)
Oh, and Pena doing that will help too.
   32. PJ Martinez Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:12 PM (#2981910)
This does not feel like Boston's year.
   33. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:12 PM (#2981911)
great stuff wake - we are ###### already
   34. Darren Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:12 PM (#2981912)
This is exactly what the Rays needed to do, of course. Pena just upped his BA with runners on base above .600.

How could Wake look so good then so bad.
   35. konaforever Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:12 PM (#2981913)
This looks familiar....
   36. PJ Martinez Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:12 PM (#2981915)

Tim "Big Game" Wakefield.

House is new, kona.
   57. Rafael Bellylard (p8p) Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:15 PM (#2981936)
Well, the good news is that when they pull Wakefield, they can get Varitek back in the game.

/end gallows humor
   58. tfbg9 Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:16 PM (#2981937)
Utterly helpless.
   59. Fly's New Handle Was Too Long, But Clever Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:16 PM (#2981938)
This is a bad joke - the good news is that hopefully it will be Wake's last ever start for Boston.

That's not good. Wake better not go elsewhere to finish his career.
   60. Darren Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:16 PM (#2981939)
They didn't start Beckett on 3 days rest down 3-1, they're not doing it with anyone.

Caray assumed the SB on a very close play.
   61. konaforever Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:17 PM (#2981942)
Darren, thanks! I will check it out after we give up another 3-4 runs this inning.
   62. Darren Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:17 PM (#2981944)
3-0, that's fun.
   63. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:17 PM (#2981945)
Navarro has the 3-0 green light?
   64. Gamingboy Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:17 PM (#2981946)
It's been high, and it's been allowed to fly.
   65. Darren Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:18 PM (#2981947)
Possible last batter for Wake?
   66. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:18 PM (#2981948)
Let's face it guys - he has ####### sucked all year and for massive chunks of last year

he's ####### finished - why we go scummy and keep plugging him in there every 5th day has been a mystery to me for years. Check the 2004 chatters - i hated him there as well

Hopefully him and Timlin with varitek #### off
   67. Bruton Gaster Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:18 PM (#2981949)
I love the Sox and am dying as I watch this game, but I don't want Wake to go anywhere. This is what the knuckleball does. He's getting movement on it, but too much. For what they're paying him, he's a fine #5 starter. The problem is, #5 starters don't belong in the postseason rotation.
   68. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:19 PM (#2981950)
Phil, Wakefield most certainly did not suck all year.
   69. konaforever Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:19 PM (#2981951)
We held them there!
   70. Darren Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:19 PM (#2981952)
I don't think the pitch to Longoria was that bad. He got it in on the hands but he still smoked it.

3 runs sucks but a decent offense can get that back.
   71. tfbg9 Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:19 PM (#2981953)
Nice job Wake. Actually, could've been worse.
   72. IJason Varitek Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:19 PM (#2981954)
JD, start us off right, and you get an extra Darvocet tonight
   73. The Drizz1e Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:20 PM (#2981955)
Does anyone else think the Sox will score off Sonnastine? I expect them to score a few runs tonight.
   74. Darren Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:20 PM (#2981957)
Phil, you're going off the deep end. Get a grip. Wake has been a steady valuable for $4 mil a year. The Sox have reaped great rewards by having him on the team. Pull it together, man.
   75. Gamingboy Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:21 PM (#2981958)
A Knuckleballer is NEVER finished. EVER!
   76. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:21 PM (#2981960)
3 runs sucks but a decent offense can get that back.

Decent being the hilarious part - especially against our new junkballing righty that owns us.
   77. Darren Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:21 PM (#2981961)
Yes, I expect them to score. Does anyone but me think that Casey is much better equipped to hit off of him than Kotsay?
   78. PJ Martinez Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:22 PM (#2981962)
he has ####### sucked all year and for massive chunks of last year

I know this is an emotional moment, but Wakefield had a 111 ERA+ this year. On August 31 his ERA was 3.76. He threw 181 innings. He had a very good 2008 for a starting pitcher in the AL East who makes, what, 4 million a year?
   79. tfbg9 Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:23 PM (#2981963)
I do not expect to see Wake get out of the 3rd, frankly. I hope I'm mistaken.
   80. Esoteric roots for the two worst teams in baseball Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:23 PM (#2981965)
The first two pitches to Pedroia were both strikes.

and have never understood the value as they are the sox and have shitloads of money - at least i see cash and not tek.

I'm starting to get the same sinking feeling I had during the Indians series last year. It wasn't even sinking. It was a kind of resignation, like, "Well, maybe it's their turn."

My sinking feeling may be a good sign, in that case.
   83. Esoteric roots for the two worst teams in baseball Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:24 PM (#2981968)
SIT DOWN LITTLE MAN.
   84. PJ Martinez Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:25 PM (#2981969)
In other news, we are going to lose.
   85. PJ Martinez Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:26 PM (#2981970)
SIT DOWN LITTLE MAN.

There's no need to yell.
   86. Bruton Gaster Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:26 PM (#2981971)
$4 million club options until we tire of him. And again, while this series has become heartbreakingly bad, Wakefield's overall production in 2008 was plenty valuable.

   89. Esoteric roots for the two worst teams in baseball Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:27 PM (#2981974)
Though to be fair that was a groundout.
   90. Gamingboy Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:27 PM (#2981975)
Wow, is this what you guys were like before 2004?
   91. The Milton Bradley Effect (Voxter) Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:27 PM (#2981976)
Wow, shortest inning ever. It's not a god sign when your team keeps going down and you can't even get through one blog post by Andrew Sullivan of all people before it's back to commercial.
   92. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:27 PM (#2981977)
I'll be back in 30 minute - we should be down by 6 then
   93. tfbg9 Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:28 PM (#2981978)
Take away his domination of the pre-2008 Rays, and Wake is a .500 pitcher on a .560 team,
or whatever. Too lazy and bummed too look up the exact %'s...

He's useful I guess. I think he's out of his depth tonight.
   94. IJason Varitek Posted: October 14, 2008 at 08:28 PM (#2981979)

The broadcast would be greatly improved if the announcers had to do the game with their heads sticking out of the monster and weren't allowed to duck back in when balls were coming.
