Stuff I want to see in this game:

Some "All-Hands-On-Deck" Bullpen action

Just to piss off Bobby Jenks: Rays bench brings Cowbells

Non-Bon Jovi music- Words cannot describe how old "I Love This Town" is getting

Evan Longoria attains "Baseball God" status

Cubs fans enter the Cell for the sole express reason of booing the White Sox

Ken Griffey goes deep

Shields-Kazmir-off-Garza-Shields-off-Kazmir-off-Garza-Shields is far preferable to the alternatives should Tampa Bay lose this game. So, uh, don't lose this game.

Take this game, TB. I don't even want to entertain the idea of a Sox/Sox ALCS.

Not a good start here, Floyd.

I was going to make some smarmy comment about Floyd throwing over to first to hold Pena on but....heh.
   7. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 06, 2008 at 05:21 PM (#2971821)
Ummm....not too many more of those please, Sonnanstine.
   8. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 06, 2008 at 05:29 PM (#2971826)
Gonna go out on a limb and say that Floyd will come out ahead in this matchup.

Upton in the regular season: 9 HR. Upton in four postseason games: 3 HR. WTF?
   13. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 06, 2008 at 05:56 PM (#2971839)
Upton hit 24 HR last year, and was always considered to have above-average power. Seemed to me that hitting just nine homers this year was the outlier.
   14. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 06, 2008 at 06:00 PM (#2971841)
He has been playing with a torn labrum in the left shoulder, made worse by his shoulder popping out early in the season. He hasn't had the same power because he can't swing in all the normal ways due to the injury.
   15. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: October 06, 2008 at 06:00 PM (#2971842)
The torn labrum hasn't gone away, so I think "What the ####?" still applies.

Pierzynski. BOOOOO

Somebody in the first row behind the Rays dugout brought a homeless man to the game. Random act of kindness or did he just want to use the carpool lane?
   18. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 06, 2008 at 06:12 PM (#2971845)
Yes!

   20. Al Kaline Trio Posted: October 06, 2008 at 06:16 PM (#2971847)
The homeless guy had probably just been sleeping in the furthest back stall in the bathroom since the all-star break and nobody noticed.
   21. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 06, 2008 at 06:23 PM (#2971850)
Maddon hinted at what I've thought from before the game started, Sonnanstine may not go more than six even if he's pitching great. It's a perfect opportunity for him to be very aggressive with his bullpen use.
   22. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 06, 2008 at 06:29 PM (#2971855)
Big fat hanger....but it's ok.
   23. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 06, 2008 at 06:34 PM (#2971859)
But if he's pitching great, why would you pull him?
   24. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 06, 2008 at 06:36 PM (#2971862)
Because Sonnanstine is always working on the edge a bit, it's very easy for him to just suddenly blow up and get smacked around for a few batters after cruising for a while. He often settles down afterwards (if he doesn't get pulled right then) but the damage may already be done. With three extremely effective relievers available it would be pointless to risk things going poorly.
   25. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: October 06, 2008 at 06:38 PM (#2971863)
Particularly with so many days off before the LCS.
   26. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: October 06, 2008 at 06:39 PM (#2971864)
This is chicken soup for the Cubbie fan soul. Kind of. But moreover, the Rays are an infinitely more interesting and exciting team to watch, not to mention they figure to give Boston a better run for its money (assuming the Angels don't come back, that is).
   27. bunyon Posted: October 06, 2008 at 06:41 PM (#2971866)
I assumed God was in attendance.

good to know.

   31. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 06, 2008 at 06:56 PM (#2971874)
With three extremely effective relievers available it would be pointless to risk things going poorly.

I just feel like it's riskier to play reliever roulette and run the chance of putting in the guy who happens to have nothing that day.
   32. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 06, 2008 at 06:58 PM (#2971878)
JP Howell is a badass EVERY day. :)
   33. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:00 PM (#2971879)
In all seriousness though, after watching Sonnanstine all season I, and probably Maddon as well, feel that it's better to play reliever roulette than Sonnanstine roulette. But his performance so far may well earn him the seventh inning at least.
   34. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:00 PM (#2971880)
Sonnanstine's given up a bunch of hard outs. I'd take my chances with the bullpen.
   35. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:01 PM (#2971881)
Nevermind that....he's done soon.
   36. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:01 PM (#2971882)
Yeah...
   37. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:01 PM (#2971883)
Well, that's certainly an aggressive hook.
   38. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:02 PM (#2971884)
This is actually the first time I've seen that Sharp commercial MLB.tv users complain so much about.
   39. bunyon Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:05 PM (#2971887)
Harold Reynolds believes in OBP.
   40. Gamingboy Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:09 PM (#2971889)
I wonder how much of a man-crush Ozzie has on the Rays. I mean, the Rays are basically the Twins with clutch hitting and more than one power hitter.
   41. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:19 PM (#2971893)
I agree with Harold; when you have a late lead is the perfect time to play for one run. Diminishing returns for each additional run, and all that.
   42. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:19 PM (#2971894)
Shut up Reynolds. If the Rays want Bartlett at third they'll tell him to steal the damn base.
   43. JJ1986 Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:21 PM (#2971895)
I remember Harold Reynolds being a decent announcer, but he has spent this whole series talking about bunting and stealing and how both teams need to do more of both. He never says anything else.
   44. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:23 PM (#2971896)
Hey, they scored another run without bunting! How could that possibly happen?
   45. Son of Snigglet Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:24 PM (#2971899)
Nice.
   46. Paul S Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:24 PM (#2971900)
Oh, Ozzie. Using a mound visit just to argue with the plate ump.
   47. Vegas Watch Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:29 PM (#2971902)
That's not defensive indifference, Harold.

He has been awful tonight.
   48. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:32 PM (#2971906)
Quite so, it's the White Sox knowing that throwing down to second is an open invitation to Upton to take off for home.
   49. Vegas Watch Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:38 PM (#2971909)
I muted it.
   50. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:42 PM (#2971912)
I'm making a pie so that hasn't been an option. Plus I at times am not paying perfect attention, which is typical for me, so I need to have the sound on so I know what's happening.
   51. Vegas Watch Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:45 PM (#2971914)
I have the same problem, I have a hard time focusing if there's no sound. But I just couldn't take it anymore after HR's performance in the top of the 7th.

At least he made it that far. I doubt Caray will make it past the 2nd in the late game.
   52. bunyon Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:45 PM (#2971915)
I thought Harold was saying that it should be a steal.
   53. bunyon Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:46 PM (#2971917)
I don't get the defensive subs in late innings when you're down.
   54. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:46 PM (#2971918)
At least Reynolds doesn't #### a brick over every routine fly ball like Caray.
   55. Vegas Watch Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:48 PM (#2971919)
I just noticed that Caray is doing the ALCS. Great!
   56. bonifacio's got the good face! Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:52 PM (#2971921)
Balfour stomping around the bullpen looking pumped as ####...
   57. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:52 PM (#2971922)
Of course he is, that's their #1 crew!

It's amazing how with sports the "#1" announcing team for networks is so often the one you least want to hear.

Chip Caray
Joe Buck and Tim McCarver
Joe Buck doing football
Phil Simms
Etc.
   58. frannyzoo Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:55 PM (#2971925)
Am I the only one who finds it sad that the Angels/Red Sox thread will have more posts before the game even starts than the Rays/White Sox has when that game finishes? Oh well, small BTF market baseball sometimes wins out on the diamond.
   59. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:55 PM (#2971926)
Great choice of times to make that point about first pitch strikes, Reynolds.
   60. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:57 PM (#2971928)
You ####### moron.
   61. Vegas Watch Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:58 PM (#2971930)
I kind of like the less crowded threads. Those Red Sox threads are tough to keep up with while actually, you know, watching the game.
   62. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 06, 2008 at 07:59 PM (#2971933)
Ball four from Balfour.
   63. Vegas Watch Posted: October 06, 2008 at 08:04 PM (#2971938)
Nice pitch.

Thome-Konerko-Griffey in the 9th.
   64. Vegas Watch Posted: October 06, 2008 at 08:15 PM (#2971947)
Balfour for the 9th. Huh.

Not complaining.
   65. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: October 06, 2008 at 08:15 PM (#2971948)
If it's the ninth inning and you aren't the tying run, you need to be bunting against the shift.
   66. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 06, 2008 at 08:15 PM (#2971949)
Surprising but I love it. I like Wheeler and all but Balfour is easily the team's best reliever.
   67. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: October 06, 2008 at 08:16 PM (#2971950)
Or you can't roll over a pitch just like they want you to. Fine by me!
   68. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 06, 2008 at 08:20 PM (#2971957)
Congrats to the Rays. I'm quite looking forward to the ALCS, assuming the Sox can finish off the Angels.
   69. Vegas Watch Posted: October 06, 2008 at 08:20 PM (#2971958)
Awesome.
   70. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 06, 2008 at 08:21 PM (#2971959)

Congrats Jim.

Congratulations to the TB Rays. What a tremendous turnaround for this franchise! Especially happy for former Angel organization soldier Joe Maddon, getting his just due after playing second banana for ever and ever.
   73. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 06, 2008 at 08:22 PM (#2971962)
Thanks VW
   74. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 06, 2008 at 08:24 PM (#2971966)
Speaking of Maddon, except for declining to pinch-hit for Bartlett in the ninth last night I thought he did a really great job of managing in the playoffs. He stuck with his best guys despite the regular season contributions of players like Zobrist and Hinkse and was very aggressive with his bullpen usage to get his best pitchers in there for all the important innings.
   75. Vegas Watch Posted: October 06, 2008 at 08:24 PM (#2971967)
9=4. Nice.

Thanks for clearing that up. We were confused/impressed by that guy during the game yesterday.
