And the Tigers fall out of the playoffs continues.

According to BPro the Tigers have better than a 97% chance of making the playoffs. But I'm not sure if that factors in their 3-7 record over the past 10 games.

I'm sure it does and equally sure the Tigers still make the playoffs. The team I really don't want in the playoffs is the Twins, that rotation scares me. Of course, last time I really wanted to face a team was 2002, and the Yankees got the guys I wanted, and we all know how that turned out. Which is a long way of saying I'll just worry about them and let things fall where they may.

I'll be at the game tonight, Tier 23, Row T wearing a dress shirt and pants, furiously keeping score in a large gray book. Come and see me!

In order for the Tigers not to make the playoffs, they pretty much have to get passed by both the Twins and the White Sox. Even if the Tigers continue to fade, I'd be willing to bet that one of the other two teams fade, too.

Is Liriano healthy yet? If he is, I'd be nervous but he hasn't pitched in a while.

That doesn't mean jack.

That's what I'm hoping for. It's the only way the Tigers will make it. I see the Twinkies collapsing before the Sox do. The Sox's lineup is too good. And if Liriano doesn't come back, I can see the Twins winning only about once every 5th day...

This teams sins are starting to show. They can't get on base. Their fielding is coming back to earth. Their young pitching seems to be getting tired.

Now watch Todd Jones start to revert back to his usual form and the collapse will be complete.

It's a good effort, Tiger fans, but you guys really ought to try that stuff out when you're facing the Royals and D-Rays, rather than when talking to we humble masters of the Reverse Jinx, Yankee Chatters

That's gotta be dated. They're only up 4 in the loss column with 30 left to play. Granted, they only have to beat out one of the two teams behind them to get in, but their 6 games remaining with the Twins and White Sox are on the road.
   9. Buddha Posted: August 30, 2006 at 04:53 PM (#2162004)
The only thing working in the Tigers favor is the end of the schedule. The Tigers get their last six games at home against the Royals and Blue Jays. The Sox have Cleveland and Minnesota on the road to finish the season.

But we're actually serious.

6 games remaining with the Twins and White Sox are on the road.

Seven games. Four with the Twinkies and three with the Sox.

I'm not looking forward to that last series. The Metrodome has killed the Sox' playoff hopes more than once.

I'm not looking forward to that last series. The Metrodome has killed the Sox' playoff hopes more than once.

That series also includes the 11 a.m. Eric Milton no-hitter special Saturday game - with no television - because the Gophers play Michigan that night (to keep the Big Ten theme from Game 1 going).

The Tigers' situation is weird, because I want the White Sox to catch them, but I feel for the fans because last year at this time was no fun at all for us.

The Tigers' situation is weird, because I want the White Sox to catch them, but I feel for the fans because last year at this time was no fun at all for us.

Current Tigers record - 82-50, 4 1/2 game lead.

2005 White Sox record after 132 games - 81-51, 7 1/2 game lead.

The frustrating thing was that it wasn't like the White Sox were playing horrible baseball. They were 12-16 in August, which isn't great, but for a team with the lead the White Sox had, that should be more than enough. The Tigers, by the way, are 11-15 in August so far this year. There are differences (the 2005 Indians went on an absolute tear in July/August, while the White Sox have been playing pretty mediocre ball), but the similarities are pretty striking and are growing as time goes on.

Lineups out - Per LoHud:

YANKEES
Johnny Damon CF
Melky Cabrera LF
Derek Jeter SS
Jason Giambi DH
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Bernie Williams RF
Craig Wilson 1B
Sal Fasano C
Jaret Wright RHP (9-7, 4.72)

TIGERS

Dmitri Young DH
Magglio Ordonez RF
Carlos Guillen SS
Sean Casey 1B
Neifi Perez 2B

The Yankees now lead the Red Sox by 10 games in the loss column. I am more concerned about the Tigers' lead than the Yankees. I don't like rooting for Jaret Wright. I am switching my affiliation for this game to neutral.

In other news, the Yankees are playing the Tigers in AA. Philip Hughes is on the mound for the Yankees and, unsurprisingly, has allowed no runs, with two hits and four Ks through 4.

I would rather see the Tigers and Yankees make the playoffs than the Yankees make it alone with HFA. Besides, I think the Yankees have a good chance of overtaking Detroit for HFA anyway. The Yankees play a bunch of chumps.

Fun fact: The Rod in 5 PAs vs Ledezma: 1 BB, *4* HR.

Hughes' final line: 5 IP, 2H, 5K, 0BB, 0R. Both hits were groundball singles (one by erstwhile Yankees prospect Jackson Melian). One of the baserunners was erased on a double play.

He's too good for the level.

Or perhaps the Tigers are so impatient that they don't let Wright get himself into his usual trouble.
