I don't know, I think I'd just bring in Papelbon personally. But I'm sure I'm just feeling gunshy after the Buchholz game.
   102. Dan Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:16 PM (#2763380)
Halladay's cutter or slider or whatever it is that's in the low 90s is an absolutely sick pitch.
   103. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:18 PM (#2763388)
I think we go with Lester here - very very short leash
   104. Rafael Bellylard (p8p) Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:18 PM (#2763389)
Is Lester coming out for the 9th?
   105. Dan Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:18 PM (#2763390)
If you someone told me before tonight that Lester would have matched Halladay with 8 scoreless innings with the same exact pitch count, I would have laughed in his face.
   106. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:19 PM (#2763392)
paps is in
   107. Third True Outcome Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:19 PM (#2763393)
I wouldn't have minded Lester starting the inning here, but I certainly can't find fault with this.
   108. Rafael Bellylard (p8p) Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:19 PM (#2763394)
Paps in, according to Gameday
   109. Dan Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:19 PM (#2763395)
Err...scratch that you.
   110. Dan Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:20 PM (#2763398)
Hopefully Papelbon can go 2 innings.
   111. ekogan Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:20 PM (#2763397)
Lester was cruising
   112. Textbook Editor Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:20 PM (#2763402)
Papelbon here makes that game in Tampa Bay all the more absurd.
   113. John DiFool2 Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:20 PM (#2763405)
Finally see our ace reliever.
   114. Rafael Bellylard (p8p) Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:21 PM (#2763409)
I'd have left Lester in until he either ended the inning or gave up a baserunner.
   115. Dan Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:21 PM (#2763413)
Not really, TE. I don't agree with it, but the reasoning is that you want Papelbon to pitch the bottom half when you get the lead on the road, which is a non-issue at home.
   116. John DiFool2 Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:22 PM (#2763417)
Paps has been unconscious this year. Something like 20 K's 1 BB...
   117. Dan Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:23 PM (#2763421)
When he was actually pitching more than once a week, he was in the top 10 in the league in Ks.
   118. Textbook Editor Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:24 PM (#2763427)
Ah, our old friend the standup fastball.
   119. John DiFool2 Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:25 PM (#2763432)
Pure Unadulterated Grade A American Heat.
   120. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:25 PM (#2763434)
Stand up fastball!!
   121. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:26 PM (#2763436)
Pure Unadulterated Grade A American Heat.

That made me laugh
   122. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:26 PM (#2763435)
Hooray, we're the home team so Papelbon is allowed to pitch!
   123. Third True Outcome Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:26 PM (#2763437)
I'm pretty sure Paps could tell every hitter exactly what he was about to throw and still strike pretty much everyone out.
   124. ekogan Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:26 PM (#2763438)
That umpire has a really wide strikezone. Rios was struck out on ball 1
   125. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:26 PM (#2763439)
####### TERRIBLE 0-2 pitch, Papelbon.
   126. Dan Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:26 PM (#2763443)
0-2 double!
   127. Textbook Editor Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:27 PM (#2763444)
Uh-oh.
   128. Chip Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:27 PM (#2763447)
Stupid ####### standup fastball.

Fails.

Again.
   129. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:27 PM (#2763448)
HOLY #### PEDROIA JUST SAVED THE GAME
   130. konaforever Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:27 PM (#2763451)
PEDROIA!
   131. Dan Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:28 PM (#2763452)
In my mind I know it doesn't work that way, but hearing that wells is 0-10 makes part of me think "he's due."

Wow, great play by Pedroia.
   132. Textbook Editor Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:28 PM (#2763453)
The little man has glove.
   133. Chip Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:28 PM (#2763454)
HOLY ####!

Did Pedroia hurt himself?
   134. ...and Toronto selects: Troy Tulowitzki Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:28 PM (#2763455)
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Kevin just came in his sleep.
   135. John DiFool2 Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:28 PM (#2763457)
That was an amazing play by Peds.
   136. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:28 PM (#2763459)
Shorty!!
   137. plink Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:28 PM (#2763460)
That was impressive.
   138. Third True Outcome Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:29 PM (#2763464)
Well, that certainly makes up for his lack of height costing Lester his no-no...
   139. Rafael Bellylard (p8p) Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:29 PM (#2763466)
I'll call for the Ortiz walk off HR now, just to beat the rush.
   140. Dan Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:29 PM (#2763467)
Alright, Pedroia, complete it and hit a walk-off in the bottom half.
   141. ekogan Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:30 PM (#2763472)
If Manny could play defense, Rolen wouldn't have had a double
   142. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:32 PM (#2763480)
How many times do you see it? A guy makes a defensive play to save the game in the top of the inning and then pops up in the bottom of the inning.
   143. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:32 PM (#2763481)
A pedroia walk off would be the coolest thing ever
   144. Dan Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:32 PM (#2763482)
Here comes Ortiz's groundout to Hill.
   145. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:33 PM (#2763485)
ugh
   146. glavine hater Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:33 PM (#2763484)
pulling a starter throwing a one hitter with a low pitch count is RIDICULOUS!!! the soxs deserve to lose this game, and if goes beyond 10 innings, they will.
   147. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:33 PM (#2763490)
thanks troll
   148. Dan Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:33 PM (#2763492)
Okajima is warming? Papelbon hasn't pitched all week and now he's out after 13 pitches?
   149. Chip Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:34 PM (#2763496)
Why is the Amica pitch zone so infrequent?

That's the first real swing we've seen from Ortiz in weeks. Too bad he was too quick.
   150. Dan Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:35 PM (#2763502)
Now, a Manny walk-off is something that I could imagine.
   151. Rafael Bellylard (p8p) Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:35 PM (#2763503)
Who's gonna be the PR for Ortiz?
   152. Darren Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:35 PM (#2763504)
Buchholz for PR.
   153. Chip Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:35 PM (#2763505)
Can't really pinchrun here, can they, with Ellsbury hurting and Moss already in the game.
   154. Third True Outcome Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:36 PM (#2763506)
Why is Ortiz on base??
   155. Chip Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:36 PM (#2763508)
Now do you pinchrun?
   156. Tike Redman's Shattered Dreams (shayborg) Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:36 PM (#2763509)
Is it just me, or have the NESN broadcasts the last few days on MLB.TV been really out-of-focus?
   157. Dan Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:36 PM (#2763510)
Lowrie could run.
   158. Dan Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:37 PM (#2763513)
I would tihnk you run for Ortiz with him on 2nd.
   159. Third True Outcome Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:38 PM (#2763520)
Yeah! Not wasting a pitching gem!
   160. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:38 PM (#2763521)
A run! A run!!!!
   161. ekogan Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:38 PM (#2763523)
Why is Holladay still in the game?
   162. konaforever Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:38 PM (#2763524)
Finally, A WIN!
   163. Dan Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:38 PM (#2763527)
I really like Youkilis hitting 5th.
   164. John DiFool2 Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:38 PM (#2763528)
YOOOOOOOOOKS!
   165. glavine hater Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:38 PM (#2763529)
hey, are you guys forgetting this is a tied game. ooops ,not anymore. good for terry. i knew pulling lester was the right move
   166. Chip Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:39 PM (#2763530)
YOUKS!!!!!!!!

Thanks for saving Ortiz's knee with the bobble, Wells.

Three-straight complete game losses for Halladay. That has to be a modern record.
   167. Darren Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:39 PM (#2763531)
Woohoo! A win, a win!
   168. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:39 PM (#2763532)
awesome!
   169. ...and Toronto selects: Troy Tulowitzki Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:39 PM (#2763533)
Wow. To bad for Halladay again, this team gives him zero run support. And Wells, ah boys.
   170. Dan Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:39 PM (#2763534)
Halladay now has 3 CG losses in a row.
   171. konaforever Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:39 PM (#2763535)
It's nice to be on the winning side of one of these.
   172. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:39 PM (#2763536)
I read Halladay's lips there! He said something not nice!
   173. Dan Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:40 PM (#2763538)
Damnit, now I give the Coke back to Chip.
   174. Textbook Editor Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:40 PM (#2763539)
Halliday is the Bert Blyleven of the 21st century.
   175. Chip Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:40 PM (#2763540)
You didn't need to be a trained lip reader on the replay to know that Halladay just said "Motherf*cking son of a b*tch!" while backing up home plate after the hit, when he saw Wells wasn't going to have a play.
   176. ekogan Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:40 PM (#2763541)
Gibbons left Holladay in too long. He has a great closer, he should've used him
   177. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:41 PM (#2763543)
why is it a complete game if he didn't get 27 outs?
   178. tfbg9 Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:41 PM (#2763545)
Yay. 'Bout f*cking time.
   179. Tike Redman's Shattered Dreams (shayborg) Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:43 PM (#2763550)
why is it a complete game if he didn't get 27 outs?

He recorded all the outs his team got in the game. It's the same way a pitcher can have an 8 inning CG on the road.
   180. Chip Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:44 PM (#2763551)
why is it a complete game if he didn't get 27 outs?

There were no other outs to get.

You can have an 24-out complete game, too, if you're on the mound for the road team and trailing, and your squad doesn't score in the top of the 9th.
   181. Daryn Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:46 PM (#2763566)
You can have a 12 out complete game.
   182. Third True Outcome Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:48 PM (#2763570)
Don't they have to complete the fifth inning for it to be a game, complete or otherwise?
   183. ...and Toronto selects: Troy Tulowitzki Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:48 PM (#2763572)
Isn't that Halladays fourth straight complete game? That hit by Youk was a good one, the pitch was really in on him.
   184. Carl Yastrzemski, A Well-Paid Slav (GGC) Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:49 PM (#2763575)
That happened the other nite, if I'm not mistaken. Too bad Steve Avery isn't around. He could've run for Ortiz without the Sox using up a position player.
   185. Carl Yastrzemski, A Well-Paid Slav (GGC) Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:54 PM (#2763589)
   186. Dan Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:55 PM (#2763592)
Three-straight complete game losses for Halladay. That has to be a modern record.

Appparently Johnson had a 3-game stretch in 1999, and Schilling had a 4 game streak of CG losses in 1998. Go figure.
   187. tfbg9 Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:57 PM (#2763599)
HOLY ####!

Did Pedroia hurt himself?

According to NESN, yes he did, at least a little. We'll have to wait and see.
   188. Elevate Phil Coorey Later Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:58 PM (#2763602)

Okay, so what's the pool on when Halladay goes on the DL this year?
   190. Fly's New Handle Was Too Long, But Clever Posted: April 29, 2008 at 10:11 PM (#2763650)
He only threw 112 pitches...there's nothing unreasonable about that.
   191. ...and Toronto selects: Troy Tulowitzki Posted: April 29, 2008 at 10:26 PM (#2763700)
Halladay's pitch counts are always low. As well, he pitches for contact which helps.
   192. Benji Gil Gamesh Posted: April 29, 2008 at 10:42 PM (#2763733)
Halladay just said "Motherf*cking son of a b*tch!" while backing up home plate after the hit, when he saw Wells wasn't going to have a play.

I actually think he said "You've got to be f*cking sh!tting me!"
