Dmitri Young is hilarious. He'll be great on tv after he retires.
   2. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: September 29, 2007 at 04:01 PM (#2550165)
I gotta say, though, I don't think "White Power" is going to stick as a nickname for Austin Kearns.

Just a feeling.
   3. fra paolo Posted: September 29, 2007 at 04:05 PM (#2550179)
Who is calling Kearns white power? We don't hear such things on the wireless.
   4. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: September 29, 2007 at 04:27 PM (#2550199)
Dmitri Young did the lineups for Fox. It was pretty damn funny - talked about how he just came in from the wilderness, which was why he had the beard - but he had a lot of nicknames, and one of them was "White Power" for Kearns.
   5. fra paolo Posted: September 29, 2007 at 04:43 PM (#2550212)
Maybe he knows something we don't!

Charlie Slowes is suggesting the crowd have been drinking as they boo Charlie Manuel for lifting Eaton.
   6. Dewitty_Pun Posted: September 29, 2007 at 04:48 PM (#2550220)
Eaton got a really fast hook.
   7. Thirty-two Posted: September 29, 2007 at 04:52 PM (#2550223)
That still qualifies as one of his best starts this year. There's no way he makes any post-season roster. See ya next year, Adam!
   8. Dewitty_Pun Posted: September 29, 2007 at 04:54 PM (#2550224)
Looking at the Phillies stats, Eaton has been terrible, but so has the Phils bullpen. Ryan Madson had better be able to eat some innings today.
   9. Textbook Editor Posted: September 29, 2007 at 04:54 PM (#2550226)
Can't get picked off there. You just can't.
   10. Lassus Posted: September 29, 2007 at 04:55 PM (#2550227)
Um, they were booing EATON, not Manuel.
   11. fra paolo Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:01 PM (#2550229)
but so has the Phils bullpen

What makes it worse is that Manuel has been riding his bullpen quite hard, and I think they are showing signs of wear. Gordon has been pitching with a sore shoulder, apparently. I have no confidence in Geary either.
   12. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:02 PM (#2550230)
And now Manuel's going to short relievers for the rest of the game. That is some beautifully aggressive managing.
   13. fra paolo Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:03 PM (#2550232)
And Geary gets lifted just as I send my comment.
   14. Textbook Editor Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:03 PM (#2550233)
Jose Mesa! Jose Mesa? Jose Mesa????

Relax Mets fans, you'll have a tie by sundown.
   15. Lassus Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:05 PM (#2550234)
I was about to say. I didn't even know Mesa was still alive.
   16. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:05 PM (#2550235)
Ruiz' brain fart on the bunt looks really bad now.
   17. The District Attorney Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:05 PM (#2550236)
Isn't Madson hurt?
   18. Dewitty_Pun Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:09 PM (#2550240)
[17] I don't know. I just went to baseball-reference and he looked like the best reliever. And I knew he used to be a starter.
   19. Lassus Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:09 PM (#2550241)
Mesa - being Jose Mesa - certainly could have done worse there.
   20. Dewitty_Pun Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:12 PM (#2550243)
I wish FOX was howing this game where I live.
   21. fra paolo Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:16 PM (#2550247)
FWIW,Mesa is relatively rested. I expect we might see Lohse at some point. Romero's pitched almost every day.
   22. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:17 PM (#2550248)
Lohse is ready to come in for the 5th inning.
   23. Gold Star for Robothal Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:19 PM (#2550251)
McCarver is more bearable w/o Buck . . .
   24. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:21 PM (#2550253)
McCarver is more bearable w/o Buck . . .
He really is. I've barely been annoyed at him at all, and he's offered some useful insights. Is it possible that the horror of the Fox postseason is mainly Buck's fault?
   25. Textbook Editor Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:22 PM (#2550254)
Loshe is your playoff game starter! What are you doing? I don't care if it's his throw day!

Panic is setting in. Mets fans, you can relax.
   26. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:22 PM (#2550255)
Also, that was some quality booing after the Helms K. Go Philly@
   27. Textbook Editor Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:23 PM (#2550256)
Madson is hurt and not coming back this year.
   28. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:25 PM (#2550257)
Lohse threw seven innings on Wed, didn't he?
   29. Gold Star for Robothal Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:25 PM (#2550258)
Bit of a spooky vibe accumulating on this game: eerie silence punctuated by premature booing.
   30. Gold Star for Robothal Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:26 PM (#2550260)
White Power really helps out the Phils swinging at and popping up a first pitch.
   31. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:27 PM (#2550263)
I lived in or around Philly for six years, right at the end of the Vet Stadium era. It's weird watching them in this new stadium - there's a slightly disconcerting midwestern vibe to the new park, until you listen to the fans. Then you know you're in Philly.
   32. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:28 PM (#2550264)
Even when they cheer, they sound angry. #### you, I'm happy!
   33. Banta Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:28 PM (#2550265)
I've barely been annoyed at him at all, and he's offered some useful insights. Is it possible that the horror of the Fox postseason is mainly Buck's fault?

I totally think this is the case. Joe Buck is the worst baseball announcer going right now.
   34. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:29 PM (#2550266)
Rickie Weeks homers! 2-1 Milwaukee...
   35. Bob Koo Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:31 PM (#2550268)
The Nats should have more than 2 runs. I guess they only maximize their scoring opportunities against the Mets.
   36. Gold Star for Robothal Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:32 PM (#2550269)
Look at those Phillies fans! Poosies!
   37. Textbook Editor Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:33 PM (#2550270)
HOW CAN YOU LET LOSHE BAT HERE?

It's his THROW DAY. HE needs to START on MONDAY if you have a playoff game! Are you the biggest idiot ever?
   38. Gold Star for Robothal Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:34 PM (#2550272)
Oof, Jimmy Rollins doing his Jose Reyes impersonation.
   39. Textbook Editor Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:34 PM (#2550273)
Rollins first pitch swinging. MVP my ass.
   40. Textbook Editor Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:35 PM (#2550274)
Huh. ass is not cyber-nannied. Odd.
   41. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:35 PM (#2550275)
Lohse only threw 9 pitches, and Manuel's already run through two relievers. I dunno. I didn't expect it either, but it sure wasn't Lohse's fault that the Phils didn't score that inning.
   42. Gold Star for Robothal Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:35 PM (#2550276)
Eaton could always throw a couple on Monday, he should be well rested . . .
   43. Gold Star for Robothal Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:44 PM (#2550280)
Phils could really use someone stepping up right now.
   44. Gold Star for Robothal Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:47 PM (#2550282)
Hat trick. They seem awfully casual at the plate. Sack up!
   45. Gold Star for Robothal Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:47 PM (#2550283)
Good point.
   46. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:50 PM (#2550285)
Still Lohse. Wow. I don't think that's a good idea.
   47. Gold Star for Robothal Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:50 PM (#2550286)
Ok, take Lohse out now.
   48. fra paolo Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:50 PM (#2550287)
I'm surprised Lohse was still in there to give up an XBH.
   49. Gold Star for Robothal Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:51 PM (#2550288)
Gordon and Romero, if the Phils make to the playoffs, will be rolling the ball to the plate.
   50. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:52 PM (#2550290)
Romero and Gordon are ready. I assume this is Lohse's last batter.
   51. Srul Itza Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:53 PM (#2550292)
What's wrong with Howard today? 0-3 and not a single K. He is going to blow his shot at the magic 200 K mark.
   52. Dewitty_Pun Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:55 PM (#2550293)
[51] If there is a game 163, all stats count for the regular season.
   53. Textbook Editor Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:56 PM (#2550294)
Kendrick on 3 days' rest for the playoff game, or so it seems based on use of Loshe today... And there will be a playoff game.
   54. Gold Star for Robothal Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:56 PM (#2550295)
Ok, prediction time: the Phils give up one more run here, then tie it up in the 8th with an Aaron Rowand homer, win in the 11th with Rollins scoring on a suicide squeeze. A pyrrhic victory.
   55. Gold Star for Robothal Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:58 PM (#2550296)
Howard chokes on his subway sandwich.
   56. Gold Star for Robothal Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:58 PM (#2550297)
Spooky play.
   57. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:58 PM (#2550298)
Oh my god!

This could really suck. The Phils are imploding.
   58. Dewitty_Pun Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:59 PM (#2550299)
If the Phils lose this one, it will have been from lack of hitting (or Chico coming up big if you prefer to state it that way). This patchwork pitching job has been pretty decent.
   59. fra paolo Posted: September 29, 2007 at 05:59 PM (#2550300)
Well, that's a laugher.
   60. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:01 PM (#2550302)
Holy christ...
   61. Urban Faber Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:01 PM (#2550303)
Guys named Chico are always bad news for the Phillies in pennant races.
   62. Gold Star for Robothal Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:01 PM (#2550304)
(in a whisper to myself) WOW
   63. fra paolo Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:02 PM (#2550305)
The phans were remarkably restrained there. I only heard a scattering of boos.
   64. fra paolo Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:03 PM (#2550306)
A bit more raucous at inning's end.
   65. John (You Can Call Me Grandma) Murphy Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:05 PM (#2550307)
Well, as a Met fan, I feel a little bit better now. :-)
   66. John (You Can Call Me Grandma) Murphy Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:07 PM (#2550310)
Though I see Rowand is alive...
   67. Dewitty_Pun Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:10 PM (#2550313)
And the east is tied again!
   68. Dewitty_Pun Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:11 PM (#2550314)
[67] Barring a miracle comeback anyway.
   69. fra paolo Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:17 PM (#2550316)
Good at bat by Dobbs.
   70. Amit Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:17 PM (#2550317)
would this really be a miracle? it's 4-1.
   71. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:17 PM (#2550318)
I don't like to hate on McCarver because everyone does it. But he just said something that is every silly. He said it goes against conventional wisdom that a leadoff homer is more likely to lead to a multirun inning than a lead-off walk.
   72. fra paolo Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:18 PM (#2550319)
Randy St Claire is the most underrated pitching coach in baseball?
   73. Gold Star for Robothal Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:18 PM (#2550320)
Mother Theresa received sainthood for less . . .
   74. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:19 PM (#2550323)
Ruiz with a little bit of redemption.

-McCarver is currently shocked that more multi-run innings start with a HR than with a BB. He might want to think that one through just a little longer.
   75. fra paolo Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:20 PM (#2550324)
Victorino had a pinch-hit home run on Wednesday, my scoresheet tells me.
   76. The District Attorney Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:20 PM (#2550325)
McCarver is currently shocked that more multi-run innings start with a HR than with a BB. He might want to think that one through just a little longer.
Right before that, he said that Bobby Ayala was warming up for the Nats.

Obviously the universe's way of correcting the implication made here that he's a good announcer.
   77. Banta Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:21 PM (#2550326)
I don't know if I'm gonna last until the end of season. My nerves are shot.
   78. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:22 PM (#2550327)
I like Rauch. Maybe he get beats today but he's the Nats best reliever.
   79. Amit Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:23 PM (#2550328)
Yes Banta, they are.
   80. Gold Star for Robothal Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:25 PM (#2550330)
Victorino swings at one at Howard's eye level.
   81. fra paolo Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:26 PM (#2550331)
I must have jinxed him.
   82. Amit Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:26 PM (#2550332)
Nats!
   83. John (You Can Call Me Grandma) Murphy Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:26 PM (#2550333)
Whew!
   84. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:27 PM (#2550334)
This is setting up nicely from the Mets and Nats point of view. Rauch faces the best hitters the Phils have. If he gets out of it, the Nats can use Cordero against the weaker part of the Phils lineup.
   85. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:28 PM (#2550335)
This is fun.

Full disclosure -- i'm a masochist.
   86. Gold Star for Robothal Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:33 PM (#2550337)
Gordon looks just sharp enough. Just.
   87. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:36 PM (#2550339)
This has been truly been amazing performance by Myers, Gordon, et al. the last few weeks. They are effective and pitch everyday. Amazing.
   88. Amit Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:37 PM (#2550340)
Suck it, Slutley!
   89. Banta Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:43 PM (#2550344)
Must... control... blood... pressure...
   90. Gold Star for Robothal Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:43 PM (#2550345)
You know, it's against conventional wisdom, but teams tend to have more multiple-run innings when they hit solo homeruns with two outs than when they take a walk with two outs. FYI.
   91. Banta Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:45 PM (#2550347)
Ok. Ok. Three more.
   92. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:46 PM (#2550350)
Obviously, you didn't want Howard to homer, but at least they cleared Rowand. 6,7,8, and a pinch hitter for Cordero.
   93. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:47 PM (#2550352)
I love the Piranha commerical on mlb.tv.
   94. Dewitty_Pun Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:48 PM (#2550353)
[90] Got any numbers to back that up?
   95. Banta Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:49 PM (#2550356)
Tony Gywnn Jr. just tied up the Padres-Brewers game with a triple with two outs in the ninth.
   96. Gold Star for Robothal Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:50 PM (#2550359)
I wonder what Alan Wiggins Jr is up to.
   97. Gold Star for Robothal Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:50 PM (#2550361)
Hey, someone just stole my mail.
   98. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: September 29, 2007 at 06:51 PM (#2550363)
Myers squeezed badly that AB.

I am wondering whether it's a good idea to pitch Myers here. -2 9th with Moyer tomorrow. Though I guess rest is pretty moot for the Phils top three at this point.

If lack of rest was going to bother them, it would have happened by now.

What happens if the Phils, Mets, and Padres all finish 89-73? Met-Phils playoffs, followed by Padres-Loser playoff?
