Howard picks up Utley. Shame they didn't take more pitches there, they'd have gotten a few more.

8 LOB for the Mets through 3!
   19. andrewberg of udub law Posted: September 30, 2007 at 02:51 PM (#2551629)
Howard had about a 3 sq foot window to land that ball in RF. He couldn't have thrown it in there any better to avoid being caught.
   20. PatrickInTheWoods, Apostate Posted: September 30, 2007 at 02:54 PM (#2551654)
He couldn't have thrown it in there any better to avoid being caught.

No more true statement could be made. Howard really can't throw all that well at all.

8-1 Florida!

Are there like zero Phillies fans on primer?

Anyway being a Braves fan its hard in this situation...but I have to take my hat off to the way the Phils came back this year. That top of the lineup and bullpen was just otherworldly. Im officially rooting for the Phils to win the WS this year!
   23. PatrickInTheWoods, Apostate Posted: September 30, 2007 at 03:09 PM (#2551708)
Wooooooooooo! Hoooooooooooooo!

Are there like zero Phillies fans on primer?

Crispix seems to be MIA. Must have been knocked out cold with shock. Long time , no see, Mr. Anabolix. Congrats btw
   25. Textbook Editor Posted: September 30, 2007 at 03:13 PM (#2551723)
Man, if Rollins just learned how to work a count he'd be unstoppable. I just hate his hacktastic ways.

2 quick outs, and the Phillies really need more runs here. A 2-run lead is not safe and you can't count on the Mets to lose.
   26. PatrickInTheWoods, Apostate Posted: September 30, 2007 at 03:15 PM (#2551727)
Are there like zero Phillies fans on primer?

Many reasons spring to mind:

- The premise of BTF/Primer is statistical/scientific breakdown of baseball. Generally, that's maybe not something that appeals to many Phillies fans.

- They're all in South Philly, as I would be if not for the farm work.

- Nerves/superstition.

- Philadelphians tend to be very parochial. We don't care about and/or are very suspicious of the outside world.
   27. PatrickInTheWoods, Apostate Posted: September 30, 2007 at 03:17 PM (#2551732)
Oh well.
   28. PhillyBooster Posted: September 30, 2007 at 03:18 PM (#2551738)
Phillies have numerous non-lame message boards in other places, so there's not a huge overflow demand.

On behalf of all of us, I say "Yey."
   29. PatrickInTheWoods, Apostate Posted: September 30, 2007 at 03:19 PM (#2551741)
Phillies have numerous non-lame message boards in other places

Yeah that's the parochialism I was speaking of.
   30. Textbook Editor Posted: September 30, 2007 at 03:21 PM (#2551743)
Might be time to get the pen up, Cholly.
   31. Textbook Editor Posted: September 30, 2007 at 03:21 PM (#2551744)
Gordon up in the pen?!?
   32. Bill Liming Posted: September 30, 2007 at 03:23 PM (#2551749)
Gordon up in the pen?!?

Sure, his arm is still attached to his body after all.
   33. PatrickInTheWoods, Apostate Posted: September 30, 2007 at 03:26 PM (#2551765)
Boy is Gordon ever the wrong guy to go to here. Of course, there isn't much else.
   34. PatrickInTheWoods, Apostate Posted: September 30, 2007 at 03:29 PM (#2551773)
Phils'll be down 4-3 at least after these next two batters, I just know it.
   35. Thirty-two Posted: September 30, 2007 at 03:31 PM (#2551780)
This might be the ball game right here
Are there like zero Phillies fans on primer?

I lurk a lot. I almost always check out the Phillies chatter, but find it to be A) empty B) a de-facto Mets thread C) Crispix talking to himself, and I don't want to interrupt
Phillies have numerous non-lame message boards in other places

Can you recommend one?
   36. PatrickInTheWoods, Apostate Posted: September 30, 2007 at 03:32 PM (#2551784)
Yeah, ditto. Though I've taken to talking to myself.

BTW, oh thank God.
   37. PatrickInTheWoods, Apostate Posted: September 30, 2007 at 03:36 PM (#2551797)
Oh no! The early defensive pinch running switch! The Nats are sure to tie it now.
   38. Bill Liming Posted: September 30, 2007 at 03:38 PM (#2551809)
Well, Manuel already yanked the guy most likely to make this spot into a scoring opportunity...

Yes, yes, yes!

Tadahito Iguchi is the Phils' MVP. Through 6 in NYC.

Who pitches the 8th? More runs, please.

Heh. They really are the same guy. Plus or minus the odd finger or two.

Myers for 6 outs?

The Exclamation Point!

Hahahahahaha!
   52. Textbook Editor Posted: September 30, 2007 at 04:11 PM (#2551950)
I'd start Romero for the 8th and have Myers at the ready. You can't treat this like any old 5-run lead... you have to act like it's a 1-run lead and just get outs.
   53. Thirty-two Posted: September 30, 2007 at 04:12 PM (#2551957)
Mets game will probably take longer than this one, which sucks.
   54. PatrickInTheWoods, Apostate Posted: September 30, 2007 at 04:15 PM (#2551969)
32, I'm not sure that'll happen.
   55. PatrickInTheWoods, Apostate Posted: September 30, 2007 at 04:19 PM (#2551979)
Yeah, no more Romero, please.
   56. Joe C isn't Posted: September 30, 2007 at 04:20 PM (#2551981)
Not even talking about the game anymore on the Mets' telecast.
   57. PatrickInTheWoods, Apostate Posted: September 30, 2007 at 04:20 PM (#2551983)
Boy, that works every time, doesn't it.
   58. PatrickInTheWoods, Apostate Posted: September 30, 2007 at 04:22 PM (#2551987)
Wooooooooooooo! Hooooooooooo!
   59. Thirty-two Posted: September 30, 2007 at 04:22 PM (#2551989)
I hope not. Locker room celebrations just aren't the same. They need to take a lot of pitches in the botton of the 8th.
Harry has started his countdown. Haven't heard that in a long time (missed the clincher in '93)
   60. PatrickInTheWoods, Apostate Posted: September 30, 2007 at 04:23 PM (#2551990)
My son is happily skipping around and jumping around with me. He has no idea why Daddy is acting like this, but that's ok.
   61. PatrickInTheWoods, Apostate Posted: September 30, 2007 at 04:24 PM (#2551995)
They need to take a lot of pitches in the botton of the 8th.

Tacking on some runs would do nicely.
   62. PatrickInTheWoods, Apostate Posted: September 30, 2007 at 04:24 PM (#2551996)
Bottom nine now in NYC.
   63. PatrickInTheWoods, Apostate Posted: September 30, 2007 at 04:27 PM (#2552005)
Slow down guys.

Ok, here we go.
   65. Joe C isn't Posted: September 30, 2007 at 04:30 PM (#2552017)
2 outs for the Mets.

Mets lose!
   67. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 30, 2007 at 04:34 PM (#2552044)
Congrats, Phillies. It says something about the offense to win the division with Jamie Moyer, Adam Eaton, etc. in your rotation and Jose Mesa used in non-mop-up situations.
   68. Thirty-two Posted: September 30, 2007 at 04:35 PM (#2552048)
I don't care what they do from here on. Honestly. I just wanted to see them in the playoffs again. That said, they have as much chance at the pennant as any team in the NL.
   69. TerpNats Posted: September 30, 2007 at 04:37 PM (#2552057)
I believe this is the first time the Phils have ever clinched a division title at home.

Other Phillies clinches:

September 28, 1993: Phillies beat Pirates in Pittsburgh.

September 28, 1983: Phillies beat Cubs in Chicago or Pirates lost to Mets in Pittsburgh, whichever ended first.

1981 was a mess because they only won the division for the first half, and they played a different number of games than the 2nd place winner, so I don't think there was really a clinch.

October 4, 1980: Phillies beat Expos in Montreal.

Sep 30, 1978: Phillies beat Pirates in Pittsburgh.

Sep 27, 1977: Phillies beat Cubs in Chicago or Pirates lost to Mets in Pittsburgh, whichever ended first.

Sep 26, 1976: Phillies beat Expos in Montreal or Pirates lost to Cardinals in St. Louis, whichever ended first.

October 1, 1950: Phillies beat Dodgers in Brooklyn.

September 29, 1915: Phillies beat Braves in Boston.

First. Home. Clinch. Ever.
