WBC Chatter: Pool 1 - Japan at United States - 4:00 PM EST (ESPN2)

JPN: K. Uehara
USA: J. Peavy

Both teams suffered “upsets” in pool play, how will they recover in the next round?

Martinez is a idiot. He doesn't have Damon in the lineup (No doubt because Darth Steinbrenner is making threatening calls), and he has Schneider catching. Least he has both Chipper and A-Rod in the lineup.

My TV says that Tennis is going to be on at 4:00 on ESPN 2, but various other sources are saying otherwise.

My guess is they weren't planning to televise this game because they were expecting the U.S. to win their group. So the change came too late for the TV listings.

I am fully expecting my Comcast Digital cable to be stunningly wrong and the game to be on at 4:00.

Pretty much. The U.S. has a really easy route into the finals. All they have to do is beat 2 or 3 of Japan, Mexico, and Korea and then beat the other winner from that pool. Meanwhile the other pool has Venezuala, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Cuba.

MLB.TV => NCAA.Basketball.TV!

Wait, the two teams that win from the SAME pool play each other?!? Isn't that beyond stupidly idiotically repetitively redundant?

That being said, any of these teams can get lucky and beat any of the other teams in a single game.

I remember reading a story once that during a visit by the Yankees to Tiger Stadium, Ty Cobb told the media that he would outhomer Ruth during the series.

Cobb choked up a bit, and hit 4 HRs, including 3 in a game. Ruth hit 1.

It all relates to the societal constructs of "librarian" and how our innate judgements compel us to subconciously put them into prison.

Yep. Granted, I think this setup was used to type to maximize attendance and enthusiasm at specific games -- Asian/NorthAmerican countries on the West Coast and Carribean/South American countries in Puerto Rico -- but facing the same team from the first round pool is just silly. Plus, there is no real advantage to winning your pool (well, you get two "home" games to one "away", but I think that isn't that great).

How about the four #1 seeds simply play the four #2 seeds and the top four teams simply advance? At the very least, it should have been pools like the #1 teams form Pool A and B plus the #2 teams from Pool C and D.

#42 no it wasn't. The Patriot Acts may have problems (I'm Republican-Libertarian) but it isn't comparable to what Castro did to the librarians.

Ok, maybe I'm wrong. I wasn't implying that we were rounding individual citizens who tried to keep books in their own homes to resist the removal of certain book from state libraries. Obviously that's a terrible abuse of human rights.

I was referring to the governments threat to lock up librarians if they refused to turn over records of what their patrons were checking out. Not as atrocious, but still a pretty deep attack on civil liberties.
   60. Richard Gadsden Posted: March 12, 2006 at 05:32 PM (#1894918)
#56 What's worse is that #1 and #2 from each second-round pool play in the same semi-final. So, even if the top eight teams are in one half of the draw, the #9 team ends up in the final. Stupid - it's not like there was a proper qualifier to generate seedings in the first place.

No, that would be a different attack on civil liberties. There's not only one way. Locking up librarians because they won't help the government monitor citizens' reading habits would be another way.

And Lee was the tallest batting champ I could find, but I only went back a couple of decades. Next tallest was Willie Wilson, who batted .332 in 1982. He was six-three, two inches shorter than Lee.
