WBC Chatter - Pool 1: South Korea vs. Japan - 10:00 PM EST (ESPNDeportes)

KOR: ???
JPN: Watanabe

As understand it, if Korea wins and the U.S. wins tomorrow - both teams advance.
If Japan wins, and scores more than seven runs in the process, and the U.S. wins tomorrow - both teams advance.

I think Korea owes us for 50 years of keeping the crazy Jung-Il’s at bay.

I like to look at it this way:

If Japan wins and score less then 7 runs- We make Puerto Rico the 51st state to ensure that we win the next one.

If Korea wins, Puerto Rico remains a US Commonwealth.

I like to look at it this way:

I'D LIKE TO SEE CLEMENS PITCH ONE MORE ####### TIME!...before the next time.
   3. DKDC Posted: March 15, 2006 at 07:44 PM (#1900214)
I'm rooting for Japan to win in a pitcher's duel tonight.

Anything to keep the USA YankSox from advancing.

Go Korea. We need Team USA to advance.
   5. Gamingboy Posted: March 15, 2006 at 09:14 PM (#1900492)
Go Korea!
   6. CFiJ Posted: March 15, 2006 at 09:33 PM (#1900528)
Japan has one advantage. As Seung-Yeop Lee was until this off-season a member of the Chiba Lotte Marines, he's never stepped in against Watanabe's extreme submarine delivery.

I'm rooting for Japan to win in a blow-out. And I'll have to go to freakin' work an hour into the game!!! $#!%!!!

Japan's pitcher was awesome in " The Last Samurai"

The Kims, not the Jung-Ils.

You know, i'm wondering when "The Lion King" will be able to come to America.

That was "paid back" when US won the ball game in the 2000 Olympic with several ######## decisions, I think. :-)

Japan just opened todays coverage with a patriotic baseball montage set to the Krypton theme from "Superman". Subtle, by Fox standards.

Sachio Kinugusa (Japanese Cal Ripken) and Kazuhiro Sasaki (Japanese Kazuhiro Sasaki) are the color commentators today.
   12. CFiJ Posted: March 15, 2006 at 11:14 PM (#1900669)
Well so much of Lee Seung Yeop being uncomfortable vs. Watanabe. That was a scary loud foul ball...
   13. CFiJ Posted: March 15, 2006 at 11:16 PM (#1900671)
Choi batting clean-up. Odd, yet somehow fitting.
   14. CFiJ Posted: March 15, 2006 at 11:19 PM (#1900675)
Ichiro with a hit!
   15. CFiJ Posted: March 15, 2006 at 11:20 PM (#1900677)
Argh. Ichiro gets on, and they put on the sac bunt in the first inning.

If you are going to bunt, why not steal then bunt?
   17. Backlasher Posted: March 15, 2006 at 11:48 PM (#1900744)
Still 0-0 over here? THe other game is a classic.
   18. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: March 16, 2006 at 12:07 AM (#1900819)
Okay, Cuba is in. We just need Japan and Korea to do the same.
   19. Los Angeles Waterloo of Black Hawk Posted: March 16, 2006 at 12:12 AM (#1900826)
Well, I was going to root for Korea, because I think it's cool that they're undefeated. But now I see that Chan Ho Park, whom I never liked, esp. after his BS attempted ninja kick against Tim Belcher a few years ago.
   20. Raskolnikov Posted: March 16, 2006 at 12:14 AM (#1900829)
I have to root for Korea, I want the US to stay in this tourney as long as possible. A US-Cuba final would be *awesome*.
   21. Backlasher Posted: March 16, 2006 at 12:16 AM (#1900832)
Does Korea have a national cheer?
   22. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: March 16, 2006 at 12:22 AM (#1900834)
Go Reds?
   23. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 16, 2006 at 12:23 AM (#1900837)
this game could be over before midnight
   24. Moe Greene Posted: March 16, 2006 at 12:24 AM (#1900838)
Looks like neither team is going to make it to 6 runs...
   25. J. Cross Posted: March 16, 2006 at 12:26 AM (#1900841)
I was hoping this was high scoring to let the US off the hook if Japan wins. On the other hand, the US doesn't really deserve to advance the way they've been managed.

CFiJ, am I correct in remembering that you follow the Japanese leagues pretty closely? If so, which of the stars do you think are most likely to play in MLB in the next couple of years?
   26. impatton Posted: March 16, 2006 at 12:26 AM (#1900842)
Does Korea have a national cheer?

"Dae-Han-Min-Gook!", which means the Republic of Korea in Korean

Frak I have to go to Class.

CFiJ,

How good is Iriki? Could he be a poor man's Rick Reed?
   29. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: March 16, 2006 at 12:35 AM (#1900849)
I love that Watanabe 60mph pitch where the guy jsut comes out of his shoes to swing at but misses completely.
   30. Antigonos Posted: March 16, 2006 at 12:35 AM (#1900850)
So basically since this is going to be a low scoring game..the US needs to Korea to win to advance, right?
   31. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: March 16, 2006 at 12:38 AM (#1900852)
Lets go Ichiro!
   32. Eraser-X is dominating this site! Posted: March 16, 2006 at 12:39 AM (#1900854)
Crap, what happened to Iwamura? That's trouble for Japan.
   33. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: March 16, 2006 at 12:39 AM (#1900855)
Why would you have your best hitter bunt!?!?
   34. shoewizard Posted: March 16, 2006 at 12:42 AM (#1900860)
To avoid the double play? To put a man in scoring position in a scoreless tie?

I don't know.
   35. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 16, 2006 at 12:44 AM (#1900862)
the US doesn't really deserve to advance the way they've been managed.

the US doesnt deserve to advance because they're not that good. THIS team, maybe:

Young
Jeter
A-Rod
Bonds
Sheffield
Berkman
Giles
Rolen
Varitek

...but that aint the team they got!
   36. impatton Posted: March 16, 2006 at 12:44 AM (#1900864)
Oh, contrary to his career, is notorious for his preference for small ball.

Not a good start for BHK
   38. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 16, 2006 at 12:46 AM (#1900869)

Would love a description of game as it progresses. Also, how does Lee look now that Japan is probably more conscious of him now?

   41. ChadBradfordWannabe Posted: March 16, 2006 at 12:48 AM (#1900873)
fellas, THIS is heaven..... for subamriners/sidearmers. Not only do I have my Bradford clips but now Watanabe and Kim (who for some reason I didn't have a clip of). That said, Kim is not really a submariner, but still, good things to learn from here.

I just called my guru of mechanics/really christian cousin and told him this is atheist heaven....
   42. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 16, 2006 at 12:50 AM (#1900875)
the game so far is a lot of groundouts
   43. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 16, 2006 at 12:52 AM (#1900876)
woohoo; a baserunner for korea!
   44. Urban Faber Posted: March 16, 2006 at 12:53 AM (#1900878)
No score in the seventh? That 7 and over doesn't look good for the USA.

ESPN News has cut in occasionally, such as the Beltran hit in the seventh of the Cuba-PR game ... keeping an eye on that.
   45. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 16, 2006 at 12:53 AM (#1900879)
Also, how does Lee look

Plentiful!

Some little ball ...
   47. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 16, 2006 at 12:54 AM (#1900881)

in the end when you look back, the US will be out of this tournament because of one man: Dontrelle Willis
   55. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 16, 2006 at 01:01 AM (#1900894)
isnt it kinda ###### up that the asian jersey and caps are printed in western Latin letters?
   56. Antigonos Posted: March 16, 2006 at 01:01 AM (#1900895)
i can not understand why ESPN 2 is showing girls softball over this. WTF?
   57. Raskolnikov Posted: March 16, 2006 at 01:02 AM (#1900896)
If the US makes it to the next round, here are my choices of "unfortunate" injuries to occur for the next round.

Leiter - shoulder strain. Billy Wagner in.
Fuentes - nasty flu, Chris Carpenter in as starter (Willis to the BP)
Holliday - broken leg, Lance Berkman in
Michael Young - acute prostatitis, David Wright in.
Buck Martinez - seizure, Joe Torre in
   58. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 16, 2006 at 01:03 AM (#1900897)

Random Thought about Sweet Defensive 1B's:

All Deuchebag Team:

C: Thurman Munson
1B: Hal Chase
2B: Rogers Hornsby
SS: Vern Stephens
3B: Dick Allen
LF: Albert Belle
CF: Ty Cobb
RF: Pete Rose

All Deuchebag Team:

SP: Curt Schilling
   72. Raskolnikov Posted: March 16, 2006 at 01:08 AM (#1900917)
I don't think Bonds on the team would make much sense. First, he would definitely divide the team. Second, he would cause all sorts of hoopla unrelated to the WBC.
Third, he's probably a bit distracted himself right now to be 100% effective.
   73. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 16, 2006 at 01:08 AM (#1900918)
groundouts for everyone!
   74. Urban Faber Posted: March 16, 2006 at 01:09 AM (#1900919)
I'm guessing ESPN figured no one would watch unless the US was playing - but then they've been showing most of the games from San Juan live. So I have no idea. They will, however, be showing the possibly meaningless US-Mexico game live tomorrow night.

At least they could have had it on in the background while Woody Paige and Skip Bayless screamed at each other or something.
   75. WillieMays Haze Posted: March 16, 2006 at 01:09 AM (#1900920)
Bonds said he wants to join the team.

What's the attendance at this game anybody know?
   76. zoperino,if youre not into the whole brevity thing Posted: March 16, 2006 at 01:10 AM (#1900925)
A-Rod fan how's your bed?

Its a bedframe-mattress combo, but the frame is nuked, so I unbolted and sawed off the legs, and I'll have to go get a bedframe tomorrow, but I'll probably still be able to use it as a mattress. Right now the mattress is sitting on the floor. Basically, this sucks.
   77. WillieMays Haze Posted: March 16, 2006 at 01:10 AM (#1900928)
I think this game will be on tape delay at 1 AM on ESPN 2.

What is really an aberration is that the Puerto Rico-Cuba game wasn't shown on television at all where I'm at.
   78. Urban Faber Posted: March 16, 2006 at 01:10 AM (#1900929)
You know, this game could end in a tie ... when do they stop? 12 innings? 14? That would work for the US also.
   79. Antigonos Posted: March 16, 2006 at 01:10 AM (#1900930)
it just makes no sense to show a michigan/ucla woman's college softball game on ESPN 2 only to broadcast the Japan/Korea game at midnight.

Bonds always led the U.S. teams to the U.S.-Japan series.

You know what'd be messed up? This game goes scoreless for eleventeen innings and then Japan wins so these same teams have to come back in the next round and play each other again...
   83. Antigonos Posted: March 16, 2006 at 01:11 AM (#1900934)
err..broadcast it at 1am
   84. Antigonos Posted: March 16, 2006 at 01:12 AM (#1900935)
yes! go korea!
   85. Raskolnikov Posted: March 16, 2006 at 01:12 AM (#1900936)
This game can't end in a tie. The two nations despise each other. It would be 100x worse than the All Star Game fiasco.
   86. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 16, 2006 at 01:12 AM (#1900938)

There's no way Japan pitches to this guy now, though.
   94. WillieMays Haze Posted: March 16, 2006 at 01:15 AM (#1900949)
I like how MLB TV isn't showing commercials. They're just showing footage of everyone warming up and the announcers chuckle about something every now and then.
   95. T Posted: March 16, 2006 at 01:15 AM (#1900950)
The Japanese 3B could have just tagged his hand and be done with it, he had all the time in the world.
   96. DKDC Posted: March 16, 2006 at 01:15 AM (#1900951)
Second and third is right.

Looks like I tuned in at the right time. This one's got a long way to go before it'll rival the Cuba-PR game.

I'm almost positive he said that he might join them if they make the semi-finals. Didn't anyone else hear this?

Fujikawa looked freaking nasty against the USA, and he struck out something like 130-140 guys in ~100 innings last year in Japan.
