WBC Chatter - Pool A: Korea (0-0) vs. Chinese Tapei (0-0) 11:30 AM Local (9:30 PM EST)

I have no idea who the heck is pitching in this game, since there is no little GameDay preview on MLB’s Classic site.

The Chinese Tapei preview says that En-Yu and Ying-Chieh, apparently their best two starters, could both pitch because of the limit on starters’ pitches in pool play. All I know is Chien-Ming Wang is safely in Tampa.

There are no MLB players on the Chinese Tapei roster, so maybe they should have just sent their Little League World Series team, since they always seems to kick the crap out of the opposition.

Korea also hasn’t said who’s starting for them, although, manager In-Sik Kim (which apparently is Korean of “Tony LaRussa") said he might use seven pitchers (he used 10 in a 7-2 win over Bobby V’s Chiba Lotte Marines in a pre-exhibtion tourney exhibition).

Korea has more recognizable names including: Byung-Hyun and Sunny Kim, Dae-Sung Koo, Jae-Weong Seo and Hee-Seop Choi.

Those with ESPNDeportes can watch it live at 9:30, but it will be on at 1:30 am on tape on ESPN2.

Also live on XM 176.

Go Taiwan!
   2. PhillyBooster Posted: March 02, 2006 at 09:59 PM (#1881702)
Current line is Korea (-170) v. Taiwan (+150).
   3. Dewitty_Pun Posted: March 02, 2006 at 10:05 PM (#1881712)
This is probably the most important game in this set. I don't see Japan not advancing and I don't see China advancing. This will probably determine who gets to the next round.
   4. WillieMays Haze Posted: March 02, 2006 at 10:34 PM (#1881757)
Is ESPN Deportes on regular cable? Anybody know?
   5. Moe Greene Posted: March 02, 2006 at 10:40 PM (#1881765)
The game looks great on MLB.tv! Except no announcers, but I can live with that.

The stats for each batter... does anyone know if those are from the league in which he played last year? I'm assuming it is.
   6. PhillyBooster Posted: March 02, 2006 at 10:42 PM (#1881768)
Top of the First.

Lin pitching for Taiwan.

1. Lee reaches on error.

2. Lee sacrifices Lee to second.

3. Lee strikes out.

I'm not kidding.

4. Kim strikes out.
   7. Sometimes it Rains (sj) Posted: March 02, 2006 at 10:44 PM (#1881770)
On my digital cable, ESPN Deportes is on the international package.
   8. PhillyBooster Posted: March 02, 2006 at 10:52 PM (#1881779)
Hee Sop Choi doubles to lead off the second. FIrst WBC hit.
   9. Moe Greene Posted: March 02, 2006 at 10:53 PM (#1881780)
Good to see Choi is still the man.
   10. Moe Greene Posted: March 02, 2006 at 10:56 PM (#1881781)
Did you see the Bret Boone bat flip there?
   11. PhillyBooster Posted: March 02, 2006 at 10:57 PM (#1881782)
And then Hee Seop Choi is doubled off second on a linedrive to the shortstop.

Abbott and Costello notwithstanding, tonight Hu is the shortstop.
   12. ThereGoesMoseby Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:02 PM (#1881788)
I'm watching this on my mlb.com subscription... where the hell is the crowd??? The whole place is empty!
   13. ThereGoesMoseby Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:04 PM (#1881792)
There are like two sections that have every seat full and the rest is empty. Is it because the tickets had to be for all games and the Japanese only plan on attending their own game or something? They are doing all the cool Asian baseball things like chanting and stuff... but really, it's like 10% capacity.
   14. ThereGoesMoseby Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:08 PM (#1881796)
And the Japanese announcers... there is no Japanese word for "Taiwan"? They keep saying "Chinese Taipei" in English.
   15. PhillyBooster Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:09 PM (#1881798)
Jae Seo's over 30 pitches. Anyone remember the pitch count rules?
   16. RB in NYC (Now with Christmas Spirit!) Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:12 PM (#1881803)
Doesn't Chinese Taipei have a major rooting interest in taking whole heaps of pitches to get Jae Seo out of the game?
   17. RB in NYC (Now with Christmas Spirit!) Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:14 PM (#1881805)
I thought it was 60 for starters, 30 for relievers, but I'm not sure about that.

By the way, it's awesome to be Chattering again
   18. PhillyBooster Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:14 PM (#1881806)
Yeah. I assume that's part of the strategy. Lots of deep counts.
   19. ChadBradfordWannabe Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:21 PM (#1881812)
TTFBA---

this is what I've been saying every time a pitcher is in their windup.

(Throw the fing ball already)

every pitch in the windup is a freakin rain delay.
   20. ChadBradfordWannabe Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:24 PM (#1881813)
both team's lineup cards (it seems)

I wonder if manager Kim will pull Kim to bring in Kim after Kim homers off him.
   21. ThereGoesMoseby Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:25 PM (#1881815)
I'm enjoying the peace of the announcerless game. The stats of some of these hitters are less than stellar. Is the Korean league really low scoring? Why do their all-stars bat .249?
   22. RB in NYC (Now with Christmas Spirit!) Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:26 PM (#1881816)
Who's managing these teams anyway? I know the China and Japan managers but these have eluded me
   23. ThereGoesMoseby Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:28 PM (#1881820)
Man... I love that constant crowd chanting. I'd like it better if it wasn't just Section 108 with the rest of the park completely empty.
   24. RB in NYC (Now with Christmas Spirit!) Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:28 PM (#1881821)

Well, a lot of South Africans will be puzzled when American All-Star Al Leiter and his 5..49 ERA takes the mound aganist their squad
   25. ChadBradfordWannabe Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:29 PM (#1881822)
I'm enjoying the peace of the announcerless game.

where t f is Scooter?
   26. ThereGoesMoseby Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:30 PM (#1881824)
Heh, good point RB. But I figured - ethnocentrically probably - that the regional leagues would have their true top talent and not just whoever felt like going.

This game is a bunting clinic!
   27. PhillyBooster Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:31 PM (#1881826)
LET'S go TAI-wan

Clap clap. Clapclapclap.
   28. ThereGoesMoseby Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:32 PM (#1881828)
Scooter is covering the Antarctic continental division hopefully.
   29. ThereGoesMoseby Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:35 PM (#1881831)
Did you guys see this: "Bob DuPuy, MLB's president and chief operating officer, shares his thoughts and observations throughout the World Baseball Classic in his personal blog on MLBlogs.com." ?

I'm sure that will be a lot of fun.
   30. PhillyBooster Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:37 PM (#1881835)
Both pitchers at 47 pitches through 3 IP.

Taiwan's Lin is going much better than Seo so far.
   31. ThereGoesMoseby Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:39 PM (#1881837)
Lin fired that last one in at 138 on the gun!
   32. ThereGoesMoseby Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:40 PM (#1881841)
Big Choi! Runner in scoring position... possible first run of this moment in history.
   33. ThereGoesMoseby Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:41 PM (#1881843)
Lin wants no part of Choi... pitching around the strike zone and getting booed!
   34. ChadBradfordWannabe Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:41 PM (#1881845)
Lin's probably on the juice.
   35. ThereGoesMoseby Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:43 PM (#1881850)
But Big Choi hacks like Chuckie Carr on an inside 3-0 pitch and pops out!! His manager is incredulous, whoever he is.
   36. The Milton Bradley Effect (Voxter) Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:44 PM (#1881852)
Ack! Ack! They've changed the MLB.tv site, and I can't figure out how to log in!
   37. ThereGoesMoseby Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:45 PM (#1881855)
Go to mlb.com and go to Multimedia.
   38. PhillyBooster Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:46 PM (#1881857)
Hong!!!
   39. ThereGoesMoseby Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:47 PM (#1881858)
And there's the first run... S H Hong with a double inside 3rd base.

And a giant graphic covers the screen with spinning numbers of the score.

This is too awesome.
   40. PhillyBooster Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:48 PM (#1881859)
65 pitch count limit. Lin just hit it with the RBI hit.
   41. ThereGoesMoseby Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:49 PM (#1881861)
I'll bet the Grady Little of Taiwan is wondering if the limit should have been 64!
   42. RB in NYC (Now with Christmas Spirit!) Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:49 PM (#1881862)
Answering my own question, the teams are managed by a couple of guys I've never heard of, the Koreans by In-Sik Kim and Taiwan by Lin Hua-Wei
   43. ChadBradfordWannabe Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:49 PM (#1881863)
I could've guesses that Lin would come in relieving Lin.
   44. The Milton Bradley Effect (Voxter) Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:51 PM (#1881868)
Now I'm too stupid to find the WBC link.
   45. ChadBradfordWannabe Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:51 PM (#1881869)
The lefty Lin has VERY similar mechanics to Kaz Ishii, btw
   46. PhillyBooster Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:51 PM (#1881870)
So who relieves Lin? Why, Lin, of course!
   47. ThereGoesMoseby Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:52 PM (#1881871)
The fielding has been pretty slick so far.
   48. RB in NYC (Now with Christmas Spirit!) Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:52 PM (#1881872)
Have you ever had any thoughts/offers about playing over there CBW? Or would yuo miss the home cooking too much?
   49. ThereGoesMoseby Posted: March 02, 2006 at 11:56 PM (#1881877)
Voxter - there is a Watch Live link in the description paragraph of the WBC right on the front of mlb.com
   50. ThereGoesMoseby Posted: March 03, 2006 at 12:01 AM (#1881891)
BK KIM! I don't think the crowd of 83 will intimidate him.
   51. The Milton Bradley Effect (Voxter) Posted: March 03, 2006 at 12:01 AM (#1881892)
Thanks, I think I've finally got it figured out. If my damn computer ever connects to the media.
   52. The Milton Bradley Effect (Voxter) Posted: March 03, 2006 at 12:05 AM (#1881903)
. . . which I guess it's not going to. I hope this doesn't end up being a chronic problem all summer, cos I'm going to be very, very pissed.
   53. ThereGoesMoseby Posted: March 03, 2006 at 12:07 AM (#1881905)
sorry, dude.
   54. PhillyBooster Posted: March 03, 2006 at 12:08 AM (#1881909)
11 pitch at bat by Hu for BK Kim's first batter faced.

Wow.
   55. ThereGoesMoseby Posted: March 03, 2006 at 12:11 AM (#1881916)
yeah... and they aren't even through 5 yet! And don't they have games three days in a row or something?
   56. ThereGoesMoseby Posted: March 03, 2006 at 12:17 AM (#1881927)
there's yer bat flip
   57. ThereGoesMoseby Posted: March 03, 2006 at 12:22 AM (#1881938)
diggin a remix of Gypsy by Fleetwood Mac in the Tokyo Dome, apparently
   58. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: March 03, 2006 at 12:24 AM (#1881943)
I'll bet the Grady Little of Taiwan is wondering if the limit should have been 64!

How he didn't pull Lin for Lin for Choi is beyond me.

Our old friend BHK!
   59. ThereGoesMoseby Posted: March 03, 2006 at 01:01 AM (#1881992)
My lord is this a slow moving game. I'm for bed after this last out. See you, guys.
   60. RB in NYC (Now with Christmas Spirit!) Posted: March 03, 2006 at 01:17 AM (#1882004)
Chan Ho in the game! After Dae Sung-Koo, that's gotta hurt
   61. PhillyBooster Posted: March 03, 2006 at 01:29 AM (#1882012)
Only six more outs for Team Taiwan! C'mon team full of players with "N"s in their names! Beat the team of players who don't have "N"s!!!
   62. Los Angeles Waterloo of Black Hawk Posted: March 03, 2006 at 04:11 AM (#1882135)
Last out? It's only the fourth inning!
   63. Los Angeles Waterloo of Black Hawk Posted: March 03, 2006 at 04:30 AM (#1882139)
ESPN's coverage kinda sucks; I want to hear more about the Taiwanese players, I already know about BHK.
   64. Los Angeles Waterloo of Black Hawk Posted: March 03, 2006 at 04:32 AM (#1882141)
BHK seems to be laboring to retire some of these guys.
   65. The Rafael Bournigal fan club Posted: March 03, 2006 at 04:46 AM (#1882146)
Yep, Jeff Brantley still sucks. Good to know.
   66. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: March 03, 2006 at 04:54 AM (#1882150)
I love baseball. Welcome back!
   67. Los Angeles Waterloo of Black Hawk Posted: March 03, 2006 at 04:58 AM (#1882151)
Brantley can't even formulate sentences. Man.

I'd like to see Taiwan do something here, but I'm not holding my breath.
   68. Los Angeles Waterloo of Black Hawk Posted: March 03, 2006 at 04:59 AM (#1882152)
That was way retarded, Dae Sung Koo (sp?).

Team Korea's hats are very imaginative.
   69. Los Angeles Waterloo of Black Hawk Posted: March 03, 2006 at 05:01 AM (#1882153)
I'm a big fan on this DH for Taiwan. His name apparently translates to "Prince of the Forest," so they call him Tarzan, which is weird to me because Bambi was considered the prince of the forest.

Also, he has an Asahi decal on his helmet.
   70. Los Angeles Waterloo of Black Hawk Posted: March 03, 2006 at 05:03 AM (#1882154)
Oh hell, I just went to MLB's site to get some roster info and saw the final score. Dammit, I thought this was live from Japan. Boo.
   71. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: March 03, 2006 at 05:14 AM (#1882156)

I can't stand that guy. I CANNOT Stand that guy. He's so obnoxious in the local leagues...

All he does is prey upon these lame local pitchers, but then when he faces a real pitcher like Matsuzaka he gets consistently pwned.
   72. Los Angeles Waterloo of Black Hawk Posted: March 03, 2006 at 05:18 AM (#1882158)
Oh Chris Wok, you ruin my image of the WBC!

Honestly, the first time I've seen this guy in my life was this game.
