Scott Williamson Whining and Pregame Clinics

No fancy intros here—I just caught this article and thought it deserved a link.

From his gamelog, I see that the longest stretch in which Williamson wasn’t used was 7 games (between May 23 and June 2).  After playing on June 2 and June 3, he was placed on the DL the next day.  Other than this stretch, his longest period of non-use was 5 games (between May 5-11).

The other thing I should note is that although the Cubs have placed used the DL 18 times this season, on 13 separate players, neither are highs in MLB.  The Devil Rays have used the DL on 16 separate players, but the leader by a large margin is the Nationals—they have used the DL no less than 25 times on 20 different players.  There may be other teams as well.

As for the fan clinics, it’s more of the same news we’ve heard before, but I wanted to preserve a link.

Believe it or not, I didn't get the impression that Williamson's comments about Dusty were made out of his own jealousy or self-interests. He specifically mentioned Murton as an example of a player getting shafted by the coaching staff. Williamson's take seemed in line with what most Cub fan netizens have been saying all along, so maybe he just wanted the team to win more. I'm sure plenty of Cubs feel the same way but are too smart to say anything to the media.

Ok after seeing the topic revisited a month later, I see it was Williamson complaining about his own situation. Regardless, he's right. If the manager doesn't have any faith in a player, why is he on the team?

Not about Willimson, just a quote from the latest Notes page at Cubs.com:

"On-base percentage is great if you can score runs and do something with that on-base percentage," Baker said. "Clogging up the bases isn't that great to me. The problem we have to address more than anything is the home run problem."

Pitching, defense and the solo homer - the Dusty Road to Success. Time to slash my wrists, I think.

Williamson seems like a jerk to me, an emotional wimp of a ballplayer. He is probably correct in his perception that Baker wasn't too crazy about him. But maybe, just maybe, it wasn't because you're not one of Dusty's guys, Scott. Maybe it's because you stunk. His ERA with the Cubs this year was 5.08, with 5 BB/9, and 7 WP in 28 IP. Since he left the Cubs, his ERA has been even worse at 5.59.

Scott, you may be guaranteed a certain salary, but you're not guaranteed playing time. You have to earn it. Toughen up, pitch better, and most of all--shut up.
