Sing blasts two homers in Cubs’ 15-8 sinking of Mariners

A twenty-one hit attack led the Cubs past the Mariners in Peoria yesterday.  “Joliet” Brandon Sing smacked two homers, Jacque Jones collected three hits and Aramis Ramirez did as well, including his first home run of the spring.  Todd Wellemeyer was tagged for five runs over two innings, but the rest of the staff pitched fairly well.

Caleb Peiffer brought up Sing over at BP the other day.  He suggested that he might be an interesting in-house option to platoon with Jones in RF, especially as his career at 1B with the Cubs looks about as encouraging as David Caruso’s cinema escapades circa 1998.  Sing has some experience in RF, but his defensive reputation isn’t too hot (at least at 1B) and, as he hasn’t looked at Triple-A pitching yet, he’ll start the year in Iowa.  However, his hitting skills are the type in short supply in the Cubs’ organization (276/404/538, 91 walks for the Diamond Jaax last year), and if he has success in Des Moines he could instantly become a potent bat off the bench mid-season.  New hire Michael Restovich is another option as a righty in RF, but this discussion is most likely moot, as Jones will unfortunately get every opportunity to disprove the mountains of historical evidence demonstrating is ineptness against south-paws.

Your powers of Cubs analysis are already in midseason form. Nicely done.

I like Sing, but let's face it - with Lee at first, there's not much future for first basemen in the Cubs system (it's possible they're dumb enough to let him walk, but I try not to think about that). Sing would be wise to spend as much time in the outfield as possible.

Of course, he'd also be wise to stop drawing so many walks and learn to swing at everything. The last high OBP first baseman we brought up from the minors didn't exactly win Dusty over with his ability to draw walks. (Or maybe Sing's just hoping Dusty will be gone after this year and the Cubs will find someone who actually believes a walk is as good as a hit.)

8) The Cubs voided P Jason Simontacchi's minor league contract.

What was that all about?

Sounds like maybe they think he's not even healthy enough to be worth keeping in the minors this year. Of course, since that's a Cub evaluation he'll catch on somewhere else and make 35 starts.

Forget the Cedeno v. Neifi shortstop duel.

Shawon Dunston hit a Home Run in batting practice today for the Cubs.

Unless Dusty talks DeJesus into coming back, pencil in Dunston at short for opening day,

Dunston? Oh crap. What's he even doing in camp?

Dunston had a strange career.

Thank god. I was afraid he was an NRI. He'd be the ideal Dusty guy to replace Walker once he's traded.

Today's game was on WGN and the announcers talked about ex-Cubs coming back to coach. We can only hope Shawon wasn't lecturing on plate discipline.
Anyway, I saw Sean Marshall pitch for Lansing 2 years ago and at that time he was as skinny as a rail. (Okay me and old Abe had similar vocabularies.) Anyway he pitched today and he's up to 200, I think he is my top Cub prospect.

200 MPH?!? Sign that kid to a long-term contract!

Marshall is really impressive. The spring training guide, www.cubs.com have him improperly listed as #52. He's #45.

I fell victim to the rapidly spreading bad info..."Who's that? Will Ohman...REALLY? WILL, Will, will you sign my ball?"

I got the ball back with Sean Marshall #45 on it. I felt small. Then I realized his dad was next to me, I felt smaller... He pointed out the numerical error. My only error was not getting enough roster data before the trip.
