The Inmates Have Keys To The Asylum

No, I wasn’t referring to Jim Hendry in the caption, although many would say that it applies to the Cubs braintrust as well.  Instead, as I sit down before the keyboard with all the anxiety of a shower-singer appearing at his first open mic night, I thought I might introduce myself to whose who don’t already know me and talk about my plans.

I’m 39 and have been a devout Cubs fan for as long as I remember breathing.  I’ve seen some really lousy baseball, but it hasn’t deterred me in the least.  Happily, my faith has been rewarded on several wonderful occasions as well.  I can still remember singing along to “Hey Hey Holy Mackerel” (which I still prefer to “Go Cubs Go”), and although I had probably gone to earlier Cubs games, the first one still in my memory was the one I went to the day before my 7th birthday, sitting in the right field bleachers with my dad and kid sister.

I thought I knew a lot about baseball at the time, but my real sabermetric education probably began about 10 years ago when I began to read Rob Neyer and Bill James in earnest and also started following rec.sport.baseball and becoming familiar with the postings of many current BTF and BPro regulars.  Back then, I posted under the handle “True Blue,” which I kept when I first started visiting BTF a few years ago.  Since then, I’ve had a few handles, but have generally been known as “DeJesusFreak,” drawn from the name of the third player I described as my all-time favorite Cub (earlier ones were Don Kessinger and Rick Monday, while Ryne Sandberg later followed).

Most of you probably know all that, though.  What am I going to offer to you, the BTF and Gonfalon Cubs faithful?  I can’t make any guarantees, but here are some of my goals:

* Beyond posting in various threads, I do not know how frequently I will write about the Cubs or have original thoughts to say.  I’d like to say that I’ll have a mini-essay at least once a week, but take that with a grain of salt.  Some weeks it might be more, some less.  I will do what I can, however, to try to keep this blog going when things get slow.

* Keith Olbermann once referred to Matt Drudge as an idiot with a modem.  Although I cannot promise to educate or enlighten, I do hope to entertain to the extent I can—even if it turns out to exhibit my own idiocy.  Even though I’ve seen plenty of baseball, I still learn more about the game all the time and look forward to this experience as the chance to learn even more.  I expect that I will be humiliated from time to time and have more than a few thoughts that are . . . let’s just say “controversial.”

* I do not promise to watch or even to listen to all Cubs games, at least while the current regime is still at the helm.  Last winter’s Neifi Perez resigning finally pushed me over the edge, and the fact that I’ve started watching another team has helped preserve whatever sanity I still have.  Nevertheless, I do promise that I will continue to follow the team, stay current with the local media commentary, and follow the farm system to the extent I can.  I will also squeeze in more than a few innings of the major league club when I get the chance and my patience permits.

This may be more attention than Jim Hendry is giving the team.

* Above all, no matter where my attention lies and whatever I may write, I promise that I will continue to care deeply about the Cubs.  I do believe that things need to get worse before they get better and although that causes me to have mixed feelings about how things are going at the present, there are very few things in life that I’d like to see more than the Cubs being a perennial contender and bringing a championship to the longtime Cubs faithful.

Enough self-indulgence about me, though, other than to add that I’m really happy to be here and that I look forward to contributing to Gonfalon Cubs in any way I can and thank you for your support—I hope to keep earning it.

In the meantime, try the veal and remember to tip your bartenders and waitresses . . .

After the recent "successes" and current winning streak I can't watch the team either. It's looking like the worst possible fate is upon us. Neifi's recent spell of rest has got to be a mirage, too. If Dusty would just continue to use the same lineups he's been subjecting us to all year it would be easy to pick a side, but now that he's misusing fewer people (thanks to JH's trade deadline magic) it's become less obvious as to where to pin the blame. Basically the "He's doing the best job with what he has to work with" camp now has a leg to stand on, so pulling for losses is equivalent to rooting against players with potential. I think being out of the race with all pressure removed is going to spur the team to a .500 finish and thusly another 400 ABs for Neifi next year along with $10 mil or so for Dusty and his henchmen. If Pierre and Izturis could create enough losses to torpedo this team by themselves, I'd watch, but the other guys have just been playing too well to root against.

The Cubs are like a drug-addicted love one. You have no choice but to separate yourself from them, but you hope that the time will come back when you can root for them again. One thing's for sure, and that is that I will be around long after Hendry and Baker are gone, and hopefully MacPhail and the Tribune Company as well.

And just like an addict, they will come smiling back to you, swearing that this time they have the problem licked, and the days go by, and everything seems great, and you put your faith and trust back in them again, and make future plans, and tell yourself to put aside your cynicism, because your love is more important.

And of course before the month is out they've ripped off your money and ripped out your heart again and stomped on it, and you tell yourself that you'll never be fooled again, and this time you're never going back...

Djf,

Hopefully, your joining the Gonfalon staff will coincide with my return to regular posting (although I'd hate to see your good name associated with such a thing). I just fired up the new laptop yesterday and I start law school in two and half more weeks. I'll probably be harassing you and Retro for help with those tort things they tell me are a real pain in a 1L's backside.

More self-indulgence? Ask and ye shall receive. The Mulletman pictures may be found here.

Oh, and good luck Cabbage! I probably shouldn't volunteer anything on her behalf, but SMK just finished her first year at Marquette, so she might be a good source of advice from someone who's knowledge is more fresh and less crusty.

Congrats on the new gig dJF! I always wondered why there weren't any BTF regulars writing for the Cubs blog.

And Cabbage, I'm happy to help in any way I can. Take that FWIW. :)

I sense that we may be able to woo SMK over to Cub fandom.

Not that this crowd needs any more lawyers.

Trust me, I have enough problems as a Mariners fan. The last thing I need is to start caring about the Cubs. *shudder*

I wouldn't wish that on anyone. You are a cruel, cruel man, Andere.

Well, FWIW, Cabbage is just starting school, Pops is still awaiting bar results, and I'm not a REAL lawyer.

Yes, I agree with the sentiments--I know dJf'll do a great job here. He was pretty much writing essay-length commentary as it was, without the by-lines.

dJf, you were attending Cub games at least 8 years before I was. Damn, boy--you ARE old!

This reminds me of when Germany hired a PR firm in late 1944. "Folks, isn't it about time you reconsidered Germany? Sure, we've made some mistake in the past, but we've got some exciting new projects on the horizon!"
   16. Fred Garvin, Male Prostitute Posted: August 12, 2006 at 02:32 AM (#2137896)
I don't think this is enough for a full essay, but it's the funniest thing I've read in a while:

Baker said Pagan "panicked" when he lost a ball at the wall and made a wild throw, while Jones is trying too hard.

"You saw earlier in the year, Jacque was throwing low," Baker said. "Now he's trying to compensate and he's throwing high. The next step is in the middle. He knows."

Yes, folks, were talking about an outfielder who is in his eleventh season as a professional, his eighth as a major league outfielder.

Can we get rid of the frickin excuses and apologies and just say that the guy is a crappy fielder?

That was from here (RR), btw.

dJf-

I just read the linked article and came straight here to see if anyome had seen the excerpt you posted. Well one. What unbelievable crap Baker comes out with!

Or maybe he means that Jacque will throw perfectly all through the winter months before losing his action once more as ST approaches?

Braintrust? More like brainfart! To say anyone with a clue is in a key decision making position with this organization is like saying the Sun will rise in the West.

The lack of accountability in this organization runs all the way from GM down to the last jockstrap in Rookie ball. Winning organizaions by and large have a program in place as to how they develop and want their players to perform. This Cubs have no such plan in place, hence the lack any significant home grown position palyer since the days of Santo and Williams. It seems all personnel decisions are based solely out of a reaction to events, instead of a carefully laid out plan to build a solid organization that will produce a steady stream of quality players to either play or trade for marquee players when needed. Unfortunately the Tribune Co. would rather eat their own children than jettison any dead weight that has money due on a contract.

We all understand you need the horses to win, but when the level of accountability is non-existint, all but the most dedicated of player will not live up to his potential without direction. This is one of Dusty's most glaring weaknesses, as the only players that get yanked out of his lineup are the rookies.

As far as providing the horses for Dusty to win with, Hendry has failed miserably. Let's examine just this year as I don't think I could keep my breakfast down if I went back any further. I don't think anyone believes Maddux wanted to go, but being the pro that he is, understood the Cubs trying to improve a team that was going nowhere with him. On a team with so many holes to fill, why would you trade Maddux for a shortstop. You had a rookie playing there who at worst was only negligibly inferior to him and could potentially outperform who you traded for? Trading for or signing a free agent stud at shortstop is the only legitimate reason to move Cedeneo over to second. J. Jones for three years? Studs get 3 year contracts. With the signing of Jones, even if you wanted to play your rookies, where are they going to play? How about trading three young pitchers for a leadoff man that says if Dusty doesn't come back, he probably would like to go elsewhere also. That's rich isn't it. If you trade that much away to get your precious leadoff man, why wouldn't you have immediately signed him to an extension? How about going into this season with the only backup plan for the likely possibility of an unhealthy rotation is the signing of Wade Miller.

These things go on in the front office and on the field because no one is ever held accountable. With Wrigley's seats full, why would the beancounters setting policy really care? An owner that actually gave a s*** about baseball would've never given an extension to a GM still resting on his laurels from 2003. The Cubs are the only major league franchise owned by a corporation and we all know the primary function of any corporation is to maximize profits. So if this franchise is ever going to turn around any any type of consistent level, a new owner that actually cares about baseball is needed.

That's not exactly true -- Mark Grace and Rafael Palmeiro would disagree. Still, you make a good point.
   21. Clute Posted: August 15, 2006 at 10:00 AM (#2141437)
Thanks for the correction but I was just trying to make a point. If you remember both Grace who was a much latter round pick than the highly scouted Palmeiro were both actually drafted by a GM (Dallas Green) who actually had a clue about what it takes to win a World Series. Further making the point that a new GM could do wonders. GM's can't make that much money(3 or 4 million), so I'd go out and throw the checkbook at Billy Beane to reorganize this mess.
