Reed Johnson. That was unreal. We were sitting in the first row on the RF foul pole and we were incredibly close to that play. I can't remember a defensive play like that where I was so close.
And my Girl called the Soriano HR on Saturday. What a great couple of nights of baseball. Just amazing.
I don't know why they threw at Johnson either. Prince tipped his batting helmet, so he wasn't bitter about it. I guess it's possible it wasn't intentional, but a first pitch fastball right between the shoulder blades is almost always intentional. Actually, so far this season, the Cubs already have 5HBP. That seems high. That one looked like the first on purpose though (I remember a couple hitting guys in the feet).
Your second post is yet another post that could have been made by J. Pederman.
Since we had a good view of the Cubs bullpen it was kind of funny to look down there, and they weren't paying attention to the game at all, and yes, somebody would have gotten hit by that ball had Johnson not caught it.
The comment about the fan situation is that I don't really talk or cheer during the game. I might jump up to see something (I'm short), but outside of my Cubs cap, it would be hard to tell my allegiance. As Jill would say, baseball is several hours of tense bookeeping for me when we are at the park.
I'm not very vocal either, but I don't keep score. Usually only stand when the people in front of me stand, but I have been known to get pretty involved in the games (the more beer, the more likely that is).
Funny enough, there was a woman in a St. Louis Cards 2006 WS t-shirt in the row in front of us. That was someone all of us could hate. ; )
Lee looks like a 7 spot batter right now. He is basically living on his rep right now and if the Cubs weren't winning for the last couple of years his placement in the batting order would be a bigger deal than it is right now. I"m almost praying for a pulled hammy or something so Hoff can get a shot at first base on a regular basis.
Fontenot is a bit of a streaky hitter and right now he is up. That is good but I don't really expect it to continue.
Theriot is doing what we hoped or expected him to do with the bat and he is basically the defender that we expected out of him as well. Like others have said if he can keep his batting average above .300 he isn't a problem at all and is a good player for this team.
Aramis is looking like Aramis. No complaints, don't really need him to have a monster season or anything like that. Just want him to play 150+ games and hit like he always hits.
Soriano is looking good and healthy.
Fukudome still hasn't really convinved me of anything. He still can look awful at the plate and I think we will find out what the real Fukudome truly is after some more series and pitching adjustments. His defense is ok and I think that is about the best we can expect out of him out there.
Bradley can hit and I don't expect to have the low stats for long. But I also don't expect to see a lot of him this season. He is getting dinged it seems almost every game.
Soto/Hill: Soto's injury worries me because if his shoulder acts up the Cubs don't have the flexibility to stick him in elsewhere. I guess they could slot him in at first but that would cause a huge clubhouse uproar. Hill as a sub looks pretty good for a backup but if the injuries are prolonged and LEe stays in his funk I expect the offense to start sinking.
Pitching:
Lou seems to always churn through his pen in the beginning. I'm not really worried about it, outside of the usual eventual overuse of two or three guys.
Hopefully Lilly and Dempster don't turn back into pumpkins or else the Cubs are going to be in trouble.
Course, if he starts trying to drive everything out of the park he's screwed too.
In summary, keep doing what you're doing and hit 500 Ryan.
We've got a Dusty lineup going today thanks to minor injuries
Soriano
Theriot
Fukudome - RF(Bradley groin)
Lee
Fontenot - 3B(Ramirez - sore back)
Johnson
Miles
Hill
Lilly
So what I'm saying is pray for rain.
And while Fontenot is off to a great start, he's 0 for 5 vs. lefties so far. It's still far from clear that he can be a full-timer.
Perhaps, or perhaps Lou is an extreme Nazi when it comes to his L/R/L/R fetish
I know that wasn't the choice, and in the strictest sense, I agree. I don't prefer Miles to DeRosa, that's just my reaction to hearing DeRosa's name brought up all the time. I think it's time to let it go, and 2008 DeRosa was never going to be duplicated. There's also the money issue (although as we've said, eating Gaudin's salary just about makes up the difference between Miles and DeRosa's paychecks).
I hate the name Spilbourgs. #### that guy.
DeRosa wouldn't have done that.
I think Bob Feller threw one back when my dad was a kid in Cleveland.
Well, it is kinda hard, no?
And I worry that there is a large woman humming every time Lee comes up to bat...
Its not my fault I have no self control, I blame the Cubs!
Ted Lilly loves to face: Four-seam
Ted Lilly hates to face: Four-seam
Which would make it all the more sweeter. What killed the optimist in you?
That you run on contact with two outs?
Lilly's other 6 inning no hitter.
