His minor league stats are really good. In 1950 he played for Eau Claire in the Northern League. He led the league with 66 SB and 126 R, also leading in games and at bats. His BA was .288 with 5 HR, 58 RBI.
In 1951 he moved up to Denver in the Western League. He led the loop (love that archaic word) with 27 triples. BA was .303 with 2 HR, 38 RBI. Also had 19 SB, 104 R.
In 1952 he played for Milwaukee in the American Association. He led the loop with 130 R and 211 H, also leading in games and at bats. His BA was .325 with 5 HR and 62 RBI. Also had 30 SB.
The Braves left Boston after that year, which might have had something to do with him finally breaking into the big leagues.
