Chaney White

Liked Of Mice and Men, The Wolfman and Son of Dracula.

Stay away from The Indestructible Man, Dracula vs. Frankenstein and The Alligator People.

Comments. A nice player. Probably would have had a run as a starting outfielder in the majors, but not bound even for the Hall of Very Good.

I've been re-reading Maybe I'll Pitch Forever by Satchel Paige (as told to David Lipman), a book which I last read nearly 40 years ago. It's a wonderful book, full of good humor, every bit as good as I remembered it.

Satch makes a comment, which won't surprise anyone, on how he rates Josh Gibson as a hitter. It's the number five man on Satch's list, however, that caught my attention:

There's never been power like Josh's. He wasn't just a slugger either. He was a high-average man, too. If I had to rate top hitters, I'd put him ahead of Ted Williams of Boston, Joe DiMaggio of New York, and Stan Musial of St. Louis, and right in that order.

But don't you think that Josh was the only one. There were lots of others, guys like Chainey White, who played with the Homestead Grays. He was a close fifth after Josh, Williams, DiMaggio, and Musial.

This proves pretty convincingly that anecdotal evidence of this kind is valueless, whether negative on Beckwith or positive on Bell, mackey or probably this guy.
