I haven't gathered data from Holway yet, but here's career data for Sammy T. Hughes from Macmillan 8th.

Sammy T. Hughes, 1930-40 NeL, 1941 Mexico, 1942 NeL, 1943-45 military service, 1946 NeL

287 g, 1080 ab, 320 hits, 43 2b, 11 3b, 15 hr, 10 sb, .296 avg, .398 slg

James has Hughes as the #4 NeL 2B behind DeMoss, Allen and Scales and just ahead of Monroe and Grant. I am surprised we never got any further in looking at him. True, that .296 against weak competition doesn't knock me out, but if he could field.... James says he was sim to Larkin or Sandberg, a "complete" player.

I've never understood this analysis of Hughes's record. Unless Hughes always played in terrible hitters parks. He doesn't have any power markers worth mentioning, and in the MxL his power was well below average in a league where everyone hit for high averages and high SLGs (like Cool Papa for instance).

Anybody know Hughes' DOB?
