THT- The 2007 Draft Awards

The draft’s winners and losers plus awards such as “best mechanics” and “best swing.” Who were this year’s worst picks? Here’s the link

“What else can I say? Excellent arm action, very good tempo, smooth yet aggressive. Firms up the front side very well. TINSTAPP and all, but Porcello’s mechanics are just phenomenal.”

A Jarrod Parker (9th overall to D-Backs) quote:

"I think I've tried to model myself after Tim Lincecum this year," said the 18-year-old. "He's another supposedly undersized righty."

I like him even more.

I'm a big fan of Lincecum, but if I tried to model myself after him, I would certainly break or tear something.

Carlos, Scot Shields needs your help.

hey CBW, great work as always. I just have a general question for you, based on the Parker quote above: what would you consider "undersized"? I was watching the Padres/Mets game last night, and the Mets announcers more than once referred to Jake Peavy as "undersized" (or "not all that big," or something). And I thought, huh? I can understand thinking of Lincecum or Pedro as "undersized", but Peavy? What does that make Mussina, or even Maddux? I was just wondering if there was some kind of standard you in the biz like to use. Obviously you would prefer big, lean, athletic guys, but where do you draw the line?

CBW -- Great stuff. One question: do you know anything about T. Bascom?
   6. ChadBradfordWannabe Posted: August 23, 2007 at 02:31 PM (#2496825)
aleskel--

Ya know, I never thought of Peavy as "undersized." I guess he is listed at 6'1", but undersized? I don't even know how to even approach that question cuz, yeah, like you said, you prefer the leaner, bigger guy (all other things being equal.....I just don't discriminate if the dude can throw the shyt out of it I guess.

Yearrrrggghhhh--

no, I don't. Should I?

Since everybody else is lining up with Qs: Is there anybody at all that you like from the Pirates' draft?

BTW, I'm actually just about to start writing a Jake Peavy article (finally, right?), so maybe I should drop an "undersized" in there....

RHP Welker hides the ball pretty well and has a short, efficient arm action along with a 92-93mph fastball and decent slider. I don't see why he couldn't be at least a good middle reliever, maybe more.

Nice work CBW. I think Heyward and Parker could be the steals of the early first round.

Welker was just shut down for the year with forearm pain, BTW.

Bascom was the Orioles 4th round pick from the Univ. of Central Fl. Supposed to have a good arm, but he didn't play last year because of an injury.

This makes me all tingly in the non-sexual sort of way.

...so of course, now he's been hurt, too.

Geez, they'll eventually catch a break...maybe

Bascom has a knee problem that led the Padres to void his contract after they took him in the '06 draft. Average fastball with sink, other stuff is fringy. Because he'd signed, he couldn't play for UCF again (gotta love the NCAA). I'm glad he got a second shot.

This from friend of the blog Will Carroll in today's Under The Knife column:

http://baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=6635

"Finally, the "win now" pick of Daniel Moskos last June is looking rough. He's been shut down due to fatigue and for mechanical work. It seems odd to hear that he'll be working with his pitching coach, Wilson Alvarez, on slowing down his delivery. "

I think you guys know what I have to say about that one....I don't want to pile on and make the Pirates situation worse, but it;s hard not to. Not only is this the wrong selection, but this is the wrong diagnosis.

Gomez: [Throws a ball hard againts the net at work and screams fuuuuuuuuucckkk at the top of his lungs] I'm fine now

Edit, not only WAS Moskos the wrong selection.....
