Nine reasons why “The Flash Gordon of the Federal League” is funny:
a.  TG is a relief ace (FL starters completed >60% of their starts)
b.  TG has had TJ surgery (didn’t exist in 1914-15)
c.  TG has played in the majors for many years (FL was around for two years)
d.  TG has played with several different ML teams (no player played for more than three FL teams)
e.  TG spent some time in the minors (check this—may be Bottalico; minors didn’t exist in 1914-15 as a conduit to the majors)
f.  TG is African-American (they were banned from the FL)
g.  TG throws a hard slider (the pitch probably hadn’t been invented)
h.  TG averages about a strikeout an inning (it was rare for FL pitchers to average more than ½ strikeout per inning)
i.  TG’s nickname is based on the name of a science-fiction character (the character hadn’t been created yet when the FL was playing)
