I was born in Brooklyn, Noo Yawk City more than half a century ago. My dad told me he took me to my first ballgame when I was four at Ebbets Field, which was less than half a mile from my apartment building. I don’t remember that--but I do remember Ebbets field from the couple of years after the Dodgers left. They had a variety of cheap events there, including something called an “Auto Thrill Show,” which involved cars going up and over ramps and landing on other ramps. I hated the Dodgers from the moment I found out that there was a major league team in my neighborhood--and they were gone. I rooted for the Giants for many years, on the theory that “my enemy’s enemy is my friend” but gradually shifted my allegiance to the Mets, especially as Willie Mays got older. I do remember the Polo Grounds, though, because of when the Mets played there. Memorable games I’ve attended include the World Series Game where Reggie Jackson hit three home runs and the playoff game in 1986 when Len Dykstra hit a homer in the ninth to beat Houston and Shea Stadium levitated five feet (I saw it.) I continue to root for the Mets, but with the advent of DirecTV, I now watch lots of games in other markets. No fantasy baseball, though--I don’t have time! |
