On the eve of my (first) ACL surgery at age 16, I got to meet Dave Parker at the Astrodome. It was at this game that he made best use of the modified football helmet MLB allowed him to wear to protect a fractured cheekbone, coming in face-and-shoulders into Astro catcher Reggie Baldwin on a play at the plate, literally putting the lights out on Baldwin’s playing career.
