Probably has been posted elsewhere but Phils moved Cole Hamels from High A Clearwater to AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Chris Booker was also moved there as part of his injury rehab. The Phils have about 3 weeks to either move Booker up or offer him back.

Mike -- do you subscribe to BA? I noticed that they have an article about the debate over Reimold's ceiling, and I'd love to see a summary.
   7. Mike Emeigh Posted: April 26, 2006 at 01:29 PM (#1990324)
I do not subscribe to BA, unfortunately.

Braves optioned INF Martin Prado back to Mississippi, and promoted 33-YO C/INF Dax Norris from the MBraves to Richmond. Norris is one of those organizational soldiers who hangs around because he's willing to catch and do just about anything else. He signed originally with the Braves, went over to the Astros for a few years, and now is back with Atlanta. He could probably have had a career as a backup catcher if he'd caught a break earlier in his career.

The Braves also released P Wes Obermuller on April 17. He was not on the 40 man roster, having cleared waivers earlier. (He was acquired for Dan Kolb.)

Tony Pena Jr. will probably be sent back to AAA Richmond soon, when Macay McBride is ready to be activated from the DL. McBride is currently on a rehab assignment at AA Mississippi. (That move may mean that Norris goes back to AA.)

Pretty interesting Elijah Dukes interview here, he tells his side of all the stories, talks about how much of a loner he is and a bunch of on field stuff.

Leeds,
Obermueller was released so as to be sold to a Japanese team.
Also i heard something about Damian Moss mystically being cut from RIchmond despite a really strong year so far, maybe for the same reasons, but i havnt found verification. Youd think with the pen now we might have some use for Moss eventually.

"The Cubs promoted OF Nic Jackson to West Tenn. OF Aron Weston and P Stephen Bronder have reported to Daytona, and P Angelo Burrows was released from Daytona."

Darn,,,i thought Burrows was at least worth an Aball roster spot. Ive never seen him pitch but hes been decently sucessful. I saw him play RF for Rome 3 or so years ago and he really could throw. Ran well too, good athlete.

Also i didnt realize Nic Jackson had sunk all the way down to Aball unless that was an injury rehab
   15. Mike Emeigh Posted: April 26, 2006 at 02:04 PM (#1990388)
McBride is currently on a rehab assignment at AA Mississippi.

He was moved to Richmond several days ago, actually. And Damian Moss was released by the RBraves; his "strong season" resulting in a 1-2 record, a 10.33 ERA, and 5 HR allowed in 13 1/3 IP.

Darn,,,i thought Burrows was at least worth an Aball roster spot.

He'd posted a 10.66 ERA in eight relief appearance for the DayCubs and allowed 5 HR in 12 2/3 IP.

Damian Moss's release isn't mentioned on the Braves MLB.com Transactions page, which is odd. I'm not surprised they'd cut him quickly, though.

San Diego released P Kyle Pawelczyk, an indy league signee, and sent P Manny Ayala, another indy league signee, from extended spring to Fort Wayne.

Beloit placed P Adam Hawes (elbow) on the DL and received P Frank Mata from extended spring.

Dayton added 3B Angel Colon from extended spring. The Reds also released former 1st round supplemental pick 3B Mark Schramek, who had been at Sarasota.

KC released former UNC P Adam Kalkhof, activated P Eliezer Garcia from the DL at Burlington (A).

Peoria activated P Scott Taylor, a 5th-round pick of the Cubs in '05, and sent P Roberto Sololongo back to extended spring.

Atlanta, continuing the minor league shuttle due to injuries, sent 1B Scott Schade from Myrtle Beach to Richmond. Willie James will likely be returning to the Pelicans from Mississippi as a result of Prado's demotion, and OF Ardley Jansen should be activated from the DL within a day or two.

Lynchburg placed P Kyle Bloom on the DL and activated P Greg Martin.

RP - I read that BA article this morning. Nothing really groundbreaking, just some quotes from 2 scouts. The "pro-Reimold" scout praises his plate discipline - citing improvements this year over last - and likes his various tools.

The "anti-Reimold" scout actually likes Reimold but feels that his power won't translate into more than 20 homers in the bigs, and that he'll be limited to first base because he'll slow down as he develops.
   23. Der Komminsk-sar Posted: April 26, 2006 at 02:46 PM (#1990482)
...released Adam Kalkhof...
Bummer, I mildly root for him.

Good to see Michael Bell with West Virginia. I wonder if he'll bump Crew to the utility role and assume the starting shortstop spot.

Moss got nuked in a relief appearance versus Buffalo a little while back (that where most of those runs came from). He looked awful.

Did anyone see Sotolongo pitch? I think he was expected to be their closer going into the season.

"KC released former UNC P Adam Kalkhof"

CRAP...Him and Neighborgall, big HS rivals, are both falling by the wayside. Kalkhof had a great debut last fall. Former ACC Freshman o the Year, IIRC, beating out Neighborgall for the honor. Kalkhof always knew how to pitch better

Huh, now that i look it up he pitch 3 and 2/3 scorless innings in low A thisyear. I wonder why they dumped him, since he was real good last fall in the NW league (12/52 BB/K in 39 innings). Have his injuries killed his already modest stuff that much?

Also Willie James is an absolute BLAST to watch play. Not a prospect at all (barely crosses the Mendoza line and has no power) but will do aaanything to get on base (bunt, get hit by the pitch, slap and run, walk) since he knows he cant hit. Really fast and loves to use his speed, really can disrupt an A ball pitchers mind, and has alwys been a fan favorite.

No, I saw James in 03 in Rome (where he only got to play for a bit).

Fun ball club that might produce 10 or 11 big leaguers...Seven (McCann, Francouer, Lerew, Davies, Capellan, Meyer, Boyer) have already made it in just 2 years.

Merricks is about the only other guy on that club who might have a shot. Matt Wright and Onil Joseph have stalled.

Interesting that Paul Weichard, the former Pittsburgh OF prospect, was on that club as a pitcher.

"Merricks is about the only other guy on that club who might have a shot. Matt Wright and Onil Joseph have stalled."

Josh Burrus (nice as hell guy, btw..i was lucky enough to be there during the brief amount of time they had him in Rome) and Shurholtz Jr (sure he probably doesnt deserve it) might make it. Also Wes Timmons has an outside shot as AAAA guy getting a cup of coffee someday.
Maybe Luis Hernandez too, he couldnt hit a lick when i saw him. How often is it that a guys only decent offensive year comes at Coastal Federal?
   31. MM1f Posted: April 26, 2006 at 05:06 PM (#1991002)
Isnt Gonzalez the toolsy one w such an attitude prob that the Phils sent him home for a year at one point?

I think this is a very good idea. One suggestion: either update your original post in the body or in the extended field (with a mention that the transactions follow).

A lot of people who visit the site don't read or follow the comments. If you place the updated info up at the top as suggested, you'd have a better chance of reaching the biggest audience.
   33. Der Komminsk-sar Posted: April 26, 2006 at 05:15 PM (#1991038)
31: That's Carlos Rodriguez (who Philly also released). This is the scrappier one who made BA's top 20 prospects at one point, but stopped hitting when he got to AA. I think (but don't know) that he's one of the Florida Air Academy guys and that he was once a promising volleyball player.
   34. More Indecisive than Lonnie Smith on 2nd... Posted: April 26, 2006 at 06:37 PM (#1991334)
Sorry Mordecai (post 30), but even as a die-hard Braves fan I can't back you up on some of the additional 'prospects' you noted in the Braves system. Schuerholz Jr is batting .103 with 21K in 58 AB in AAA. Timmons might have a shot at the Pete Orr role on day.

The Braves, long developers of cheap, homegrown (often from GA or nearby--see Francouer, McCann, Chipper (FL), Saltalamacchia, Davies) look to be draining the cupboard of quality position players in the minors. Salty is the only one likely to make a significant impact, and that will likely be a while, as he's still catching every day and is considering a lesser C than McCann, defensively. Some reasonable pitching exists, but largely in loA-AA. Likely relievers, though.

This is a great thread idea.

Where do you find the transactions? I haven't found a reliable source yet.

A couple Phillies tidbits - Slightly prospectish-type guy Matt Sweeney has been horrible in the Reading bullpen and is being sent back to Clearwater.

With the two guys added to the Red Barons roster, minor-league stalwart LH starter Allen Davis is being dropped to AA.

As for the Red Barons, Cole Hamels will make his AAA debut tomorroooooo in Norfolk.

In today's game John Maine got the win and Matt White (yes, this guy, the Phillies picked him up just before the season) had his first bad start after two great ones this year.

For example, at Our Sports Central we learn that Savannah activated 3B Leonard Davis from the DL and sent INF Ofilio Castro (who hit for the cycle earlier this season) to extended spring training (which is what getting sent to a short-season team means at this time of year).

Also, Red Barons fans might like to know that Geoff Geary hit a double and scored a run yesterday against the Rockies.

This doubled his career hit total and was his first career RBI, run and extrabase hit in the majors.

Also he pitched 2 2/3 scoreless.

Mordecai, presuming you mean Slayden, I've no idea.
For those not familiar with him, he was considered a possible first round talent before injuries hampered his sophomore and junior years at Georgia Tech. Philadelphia tabbed him in the 8th(?) round - which I think was a steal - though there are questions about his defense and, specifically, whether or not his throwing arm will ever come back (a la Brian Stavisky). He reminds me of a less athletic Matt Murton (though that could just be the school connection) with a teeny bit more power potential.

Mike Nannini - how many statheads promoted that guy back in the day? He's still only 25, but I think that ship has sailed.

Hall looked pretty good for Louisville last night. The defense behind him was atrocious. Terrence Long, after spinning around then tripping on a blade of grass, came close to getting brained by a can of corn. Kris Wilson was quite impressive for the Clippers. It's a real treat to sit right behind home plate & watch the movement on some of these pitches.

Yeah I can see the Murton/Slayden comp, Slayden does have more raw power but isnt as good of a hitter overall (in large part due to time missed) but when he gets one its fun to watch his swing. Hes only 6 foot but its a real home run swing. Slaydens throwing arm didnt seem to be much when i saw him Jr year at Tech but i know it was once quite good.

Joe Inglett started at SS for Akron tonight (as opposed to Buffalo). Presuming this isn't a rehab/short-term thing, he's getting screwed - apparently, hitting .330 and playing multiple positions adequately doesn't cut it in AAA.

I have no idea what's going on, especially since they replaced Inglett at Buffalo with Ivan Ochoa. Unless Merloni's being showcased or something, this makes no sense at all.

Jamal Strong is no longer with Iowa - he made a pinch hitting appearance for Richmond tonight (and struck out). His '06 has been pretty brutal - 2 for 29 with a walk. Richmond's a pretty bad situation - sub-par offense, pitching, park, and a dissatisfied fan base.

Supposedly, Inglett's demotion was to get him more time at short. But, is Jose Flores that much of an impediment? He's a slightly underrated player, but not a prospect and not a GG calibre gloveman.
