I'd like to ask you guys for help. As you may know, I'm working on a draft project over at The HArdball Times. I will do a breakdown of the 1st round (picks 1-30). After that, I'd like to take anywhere from 10-20 other picks that you, the community, thinks may have dropped for whichever reason, OR is a player that has more potential than the draft round in which he was drafted in. I already have Mortensen, Rike, HArvey, and Nevin Griffith (I don't why everybody likes him so much) as extra players that I will look at. I will gladly take any suggestions (ahem, MikeE, this is you) that you may have.

if you believe ESPN.com - they've also signed LaPorta. I might have my doubts, as they also list Bramhall as having signed and he's still dealing for Rice in the CWS!
Nonetheless, signing 26 picks out of 46 within 4 days of completing the draft is pretty damn impressive! Some clubs don't even sign that many out of a WHOLE draft!

That would be a steal. Jones was considered to be a top-100 talent by many people, but he did have some signability questions. He's a Crawford-like talent, except that he has a significantly better arm.
According to the Baltimore Sun, 29 of their 48 picks have been signed including:
6th round, Joseph Mahoney, a first baseman from the University of Richmond.
7th round, Matthew Angle, an outfielder out of Ohio State.
9th round, James Crowley, a shortstop from Galveston College.

Thanks for the ideas fellas. I will certainly take a look at them.
Sneak peek one some of what I wrote that should be done by tomorrow....
"Uninspiring pick here at #4. So much so that I don't really feel like making a video clip of his motion. On the positive side, I like that he's aggressive ( I like max effort guys), and his arm action is pretty good. With a high 3/4 slot, he throws the ball downhill very well and his velocity is excellent. The problem is that his lower body action and momentum (tempo) don't really help him to throw hard, so he's more of an "arm-thrower." Couple that with an abrupt-ish finish and it makes me question how long he'll last. With plenty of better talent available, I don't get this pick here. I want upside at #4 I guess. Rush him and rush him quickly because a guy like this probably doesn't have as many bullets left as someone with better mechanics.

That article says he got "almost" $100,000, including having the Yankees pay for the rest of his tuition, which at USD might eat up a third of that money.

Today's BA transactions list (the regular blog, not the draft db) has loads of signings by team. It's not comprehensive, but many have not been reported here yet.
Not a signing, but a germane question: has the H1-B cap driven moratorium on rookie league age limits been extended this year (ex.: Appy normally limits teams to no more than 17 21+ year olds and 2 23+ yr olds, but that rule has been suspended the last few years)?

Mike:
Any word on the Chinese players signed by New York and Seattle? Is this just entering a market early (before, iow, it's ready), or are these guys legit prospects?
78. Mike Emeigh
Posted: June 22, 2007 at 01:37 PM (#2413024)
Seattle took a different tack from the Yankees. The two players signed by the Yankees are 19-year-olds; the Mariners signed a 28-YO catcher and 24-YO utility guy.
China is still behind the rest of the Far East in terms of talent, although the gap is narrowing, especially among the younger players. Both the Yankees and Mariners have been making noises about starting a baseball academy in China for a while now, and my guess is that these first players are being signed more for show than out of any real expectation that they will produce down the road.

I think we'll get a better read on the talent level in China after the Beijing Olympics. China is going all-out to build a team that can compete for a medal.
The Yankees finally released the list of players they signed.

Detwiler signed for a $2.15M bonus, down roughly 10% from the average bonus given to prior #6 overall picks (I excluded Andrew Miller's major league deal from the calculation).
Jim Callis did a survey of MLB execs and the consensus seems to be that every first rounder will sign. Once one high pick signs, expect a flood of announcements.
Jim Callis: http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/draft/?p=190
The Diamondbacks signed North Carolina high school outfielder Tyrell Worthington, their fifth-round pick, to a $220,000 bonus. The recommendation for his slot (No. 163) was $143,100, which he exceeded by $76,900....
Worthington is still raw as a baseball player, but his power-speed combination is enticing. Because he was a two-sport star—he rushed for 2,591 yards and 25 touchdowns as a senior and signed a football scholarship with East Carolina as a running back—Arizona can spread his bonus over five years. MLB has calculated the net present value of his deal as $169,790.
