2008 draft signings

Open thread for posting draft signings - please post them as you hear about them.

I do not like to analyze the draft until we have the majority of the signings completed and some of the players start getting PT with wood bats and the like. FWIW, the short-season leagues open this week (June 17 for the NY/P, Northwest, Appy, and Pioneer, June 19 for the GCL, June 22 for the AZL).

Cool. I was waiting for this thread. Always informative.

Atlanta has signed...

3rd rounder Craig Kimbrel, an from from an AL JUCO for almost 400k.
4th rounder Braden Schlehuber, a defense first catcher from an NV CC, for a quarter-mil.
7th, 8th and 9th rounder JUCO pitchers Paul Clemens, Brett Oberholtzer and Kyle Farrell for 150k each.

In a surprising early signing the Phils have inked 34th rounder Blaine O'Brien already. A 6-7 RHP from Scituate, MA, he had a fully scholly to UGA and was considered a tough sign (and fell for that reason) yet signed already.
I can't find a dollar amount.

Is Tim Beckham considered the top domino to begin a signing frenzy? Or is it Alvarez or Posey? Or Hosmer? Lots of guys demanding lots of money.
   7. MM1f Posted: June 15, 2008 at 03:58 PM (#2820458)
The Phils have also inked 3 senior signs in UNC-Wilmington 2b Daniel Hargrave (round 22), Hawaii OF Brandon Haislet (23) and Villanova RHP Jordan Ellis (28).

They also inked Bellflower, CA LHP-OF Anthony Gose for 770,000. I can't find whether they inked him as an OF or LHP. He was considered better as a power LHP than a Juan Pierre-type OF but said he would only sign as an OF.

The Astros' inked a bunch of guys. The big name is 2nd round OF Jay Austin from Atlanta and the rest are mostly seniors and late round picks so far...

Twins' sign 14th overall OF Aaron Hicks for 1.77 mil
   8. MM1f Posted: June 15, 2008 at 04:00 PM (#2820461)
Phils also signed 9th round Ole Miss 3b Cody Overbeck, 8th round PR RHP Julio Rodriguez and 5th round Wright State 1b Jeremy Hamilton

We really ought to have a CWS posting. I remember last year a Regionals and CWS thread drew interest and so far this CWS has been amazing.

Yesterday seems historical as it featured not one, but two, of the biggest meltdowns you will ever see and today the lowest seed ever to go to Omaha is KIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILLING mighty Rice 16-1!
   10. MM1f Posted: June 15, 2008 at 04:21 PM (#2820488)
I should add that the lower seeded team had won all 3 of the games played so far

The Indians signed their #1 pick, Lonnie Chisenhall.

I am extremely intrigued to see how Havens starts off his professional career. Everyone says he can hit, so he should excel in the NY Penn league pretty rapidly. I'd have started him as SS and see if he can handle it rather than start him off at 2B.

Battlekow,
I really liked the Kemp and Sherrill interviews since I got to see both play plenty.

I LOVE Kemp because I got to see him transform himself, basically, in one weekend. Entering regionals play at UNC last year he wasn't a full-time starter but he went simply BONKERS in the regional. UNC swept the regional but both ECU and WCU took them down to the wire and it seemed like every time Kemp stepped up he was lacing an RBI double to the gaps and then he kept that torrid pace up all year this year.
Kemp is right about Ryan Wood. I really don't see how he wasn't a draft prospect, esp. if he would have signed anywhere in rounds 1-15.

Although Wood didn't breakout like he could have this year he is light on his feet, has a great arm, some present power and batspeed and a lanky frame to add power to. He was a top 100-200 HS player as an RHP before hurting his arm.

Sherill is a big guy with a good arm although he was definitely inconsistent with both velocity and command. Nice potential though and his slider really is as good as adverstied and on his good days his FB really is 91-93.. that isn't inflated. I've seen several scouts guns showing him sitting there.
I think AppState should not have moved him from rotation to pen after his freshman year.

Everyone says he can hit, so he should excel in the NY Penn league pretty rapidly.

Not to be Mr. Contarian, but I really have my doubts. I'm sure he will hit fine in Brooklyn and A-ball but I have serious doubts about his bat being more than "ok". He simply has never impressed him, part of that is surely because I saw him play much more in his crap fr and so years than his breakout jr year.

I'm rather surprised.
Humber and Pelfrey went straight to St Lucie (FSL), Mulvey made 1*-2 starts in the GCL and went to Binghamton

Both Havens and Holt are college guys, whom the Mets are "presumably", high on, Omar believes in Challenging guys, and St. Lucie is beyond terrible this year- Havens and Holt would almost certainly upgrade whoever's PT they took

4th rounder Tim Melville is asking for $1.7 million

Royals offered 7th rounder 3B Jason Esposito $1.5 million. He turned it down to go to Vanderbilt.

29th rounder OF Ryan Curl is probably going to reject the Royals and head to Miami, OH

31st rounder 1B Beau Brett is going to reject the Royals, despite the fact his uncle George is the Royals VP.

Also saw the Marlins signed OF Isaac Galloway, 2nd round talent who fell to the 7th round, for $250,000.

RE: Venditte switch-pitching..
I have heard that he will, but that isn't a 100% ironclad lock.
He pretty much has to switch-pitch to be anything more than organizational filler. He is a sharp pitcher who was a very good college reliever but his stuff is mediocre and there are 100 guys every year who fit that description. The upside to that sort of guy, not switch pitching, is something like Lee Garnder but that is the best-scenario... half of the guys like that might not make AA.
   41. MM1f Posted: June 16, 2008 at 12:35 PM (#2821314)
Galloway would sign for "just" a quarter-mil?
Crap. Seems like he should have been popped long sooner than round 7 in that case.

I'm surprised Esposito got offered 1.5 mil. I never heard of him mentioned as a first-round talent.

Also while I'm thinking of it, the Red Sox were escorting around their 20th round draft pick, Alex Meyer, a 6-foot-7 right-handed pitcher from Greensburg (IN) High who has committed to the University of Kentucky, around Great American Ball Park yesterday. I love how his nickname is 'Bubba.'

If a switch pitcher faced a switch hitter, what would happen?

I assume that the pitcher would use whichever arm is better (surely one is better than the other, even if they're both good), and the batter would bat from the opposite side.

Agreed. I'm not sure the $1.7M figure is legit, considering that he supposedly also asked all 30 teams not to pick him - 1.7 isn't that far above (if at all) slot for where he would have gone.
   54. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 16, 2008 at 11:37 PM (#2822164)
Melville would probably have gone around the middle of round 1. Hicks signed for $1.78 million, Cooper for $1.5M. So $1.7 is right around slot, probably a little on the high side.

Are you sure you're thinking of Melville? Sonny Gray asked teams not to draft him, but my impression was that Melville very much wanted to be drafted. He may have said "don't draft me unless you're willing to offer me $1.7 million."

The Braves have signed a bunch of their lower round picks, the most interesting of them being Nicholas Fuller ( Chisenhall's partner in crime ).
On one of the Braves board, someone posted that Zeke Spruill, second round pick, has been inked. No link on that yet.

I couldn't find it anywhere too, but Shanks usually is right about his information, whatever his other opinions might be.

Any opinion on Brandon Hicks? He is putting up a 870 OPS at the Beach, and supposedly decent defence.
But he is 22, and is striking out at a ridiculous 30% clip, even though he draws his fair share of walks. So while he is killing the ball when he makes contact, he is not making contact often enough.

The Red Sox will be holding a workout/tryout for all their unsigned high school players tomorrow at Fenway.

Expected to be on hand are Ryan Westmoreland, Anthony Desclafani, Matt Marquis, Pete Hissey, Kyle Stroup, Derrik Gibson, Caleb Brown, Tyler Wilson, Brandon Miller and most likely some others.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Sox hold another August workout for the same guys. I think drafting all of them and making them "sing for their supper" so to speak over the course of the summer is an excellent strategy.

I was thinking the same thing, but maybe not the same thing.

I'm pretty sure the Red Sox aren't changing their position on these players - maybe they haven't made their final offer yet, but they know what they want to spend, and aren't going to move it upward based on a small sample. But will the players do the same? That is, if Player X has a bad tryout/workout, will he be more likely to take that relative blemish into account and accept the offer on the table? Will Player X assume that his stock has fallen if he has a bad day?

Taking all the young players and putting them all into one massive Prisoner's Dilemma (or something like it) is a pretty good negotiating strategy.
   89. Templeusox has reached his genetic threshold Posted: June 30, 2008 at 12:36 PM (#2837518)
It's also a good way to have them come in and fill out their paper work and take their physicals so the Sox can take this down to the last day (August 15th) without having to worry about red tape.

You guys realize you're rooting for the Red Sox at the expense of some random high school kids, right? That's like being a Philistine cheering on Goliath to crush that punk Hebrew kid.

   92. Kyle S at work Posted: June 30, 2008 at 12:50 PM (#2837535)
I'm sure many of them fall into that category, but it's hardly universal among baseball players who get drafted (look at Tim Beckham's dad - he sacrificed his quality of life to pay for Tim's baseball). Anyway, I'd rather think of them than a billionaire hedge fund manager.
   93. Templeusox has reached his genetic threshold Posted: June 30, 2008 at 12:55 PM (#2837542)
You're acting like we're rooting for the Sox to kidnap them. All I want to see is the Sox sign them.

Aren't you a college football fan, anyway? I would imagine college football fans speak from a wealth of experience when it comes to exploiting teenagers.
   94. Kyle S at work Posted: June 30, 2008 at 01:13 PM (#2837558)
Yes, I'm a college football fan, but one who thinks that players should be paid.

You realize I'm mostly just trying to razz you guys, right? I know these guys are all going to sign six-figure player services contracts. Still, it's going to be the last big payday for most of them, so I'd rather them get more at the expense of Mr. Henry.
   95. villageidiom Posted: June 30, 2008 at 01:34 PM (#2837578)
Since you're just razzing us, I suppose we needn't respond to anything you're saying with any amount of seriousness. And that appears to have been the case so far. I'd have thought you'd be pleased by the responses.
   96. Templeusox has reached his genetic threshold Posted: June 30, 2008 at 01:43 PM (#2837584)
It's all good.

If anyone's interested, I've put together a fairly no frills Excel spreadsheet which refreshes the stats of the top 100 drafted players every time Fangraphs updates their stats. Here is the download link.

I could obviously only include draftees which have played this year, but I will be updating it as more sign and play. It will refresh the stats every time you start it up in Excel.

If there are people more experienced with Excel than I, I'd be open to suggestions.

Pepperdine's Brett Hunter was one of two surprise late additions to the Team USA traveling college all-star team, the other being Fresno State's CWS MOP Tommy Mendonca. The two spaces became available when UNC IF Kyle Seager and 1b/OF Dustin Ackley changed their mind on accepting their invites after the CWS. They might have been tired or something but it is still kind of surprising since you figure it would have been nice for them to play their summer ball just 20 min from campus and an hour or two from their hometowns. Word is they want to go to the Cape for "more exposure" but it isn't like Team USA doesn't get every scout watching them. The team is loaded with future first-rounders (Strasburg, Kentrail Davis, Kyle Gibson, ect ect) and has produced picks like Smoak, Zimmerman, Alex Gordon, Jered Weaver, Verlander, ect in the past

Aaaaaaanyway, that is way off topic. The reason I brought up Hunter is how this relates to the subject of draft pick signings.
Usually the team is freshman and sophomores only but Hunter was let on and presumably he will use this as a chance to show that his arm is healthy. This will be what they call a "summer draft/follow" and if he shows he is healthy he could maybe get closer to the kind of bonus he was expected before injuries ruined his junior season.

The one of the most recent Jr.s to play for Team USA was Vandy's Casey Weathers who would showcase his fastball there and be a first rounder as a sr. the next year

Speaking of Tyler Wilson... Kennesaw State, who wasn't even able to play in their own conf tourney because they were a D-II school just a year or two ago, is really showing some signs of turning themselves into a regional powerhouse. Being able to nab a few recruits from SEC schools (Wilson, Jordan Craft and Charlie Culberson if he hadn't gone pro) is pretty impressive for the lame suburban commuter school that no one wants to go to. Having Eric McQueen (former GT C, now youth baseball bigshot in Cobb Co) on as a volunteer coach has to a be a big part of that
