Is Zink the knuckleballer?

Steve Andrade has been called up by the Royals and Luke Hudson will probably be DFAed, no official announcement yet though.

Yes.

Yes, Zink is

"Durham (IL, AAA): Received OF/DH Ryan Knox from Montgomery. "

Knox was jsut in durham acouple weeks ago. he better get used to shuttling it seems

An outright cut for Marland WIlliams is a little surprising but now that i look it up hes both older and a worse hitter than i though.

I wonder if he'll go back to FB, IIRC he was a decent recruit out of HS

Cubs articles say its likely Aardsma to Iowa for Rich Hill, who will take Ruschs rotation spot

Ron Flores called up to Oakland, Tim Rall promoted from Midland to Sacramento.

What do you guys think of Matt Roney taking a bullpen spot when Saarloos/Kennedy/Gaudin replaces Loaiza in the rotation? He's been pretty good since moving to the bullpen full time.
   5. Der Komminsk-sar Posted: May 01, 2006 at 01:06 PM (#1998745)
I believe in Roney the reliever. His main problem as a starter was lacking a reliable third pitch, but he's had big league stuff for sometime now.

I haven't seen any formal confirmation of this. However, Hill was scratched from his scheduled start for Iowa tonight, which leads me to believe that it's going to happen.

Can he throw strikes and not give up jonrones yet?
   8. PhillyBooster Posted: May 01, 2006 at 03:36 PM (#1998969)
Hill has 33 Ks in 25 innings at Iowa (1.44 ERA). Of course, he had great K numbers last year too before his ill-fated callup.

Bad luck or AAAA All-Star?

I haven't seen any formal confirmation of this yet, either.

Both?

OF Carlos Gonzalez twisted his knee on Friday night. He missed Saturday's game for Lancaster (Cal, Adv A) and DH'd Sunday. He might not play in the field for a couple more days.

Curtis Thigpen is on the DL at New Hampshire. Mike Schneider called up from Dunedin to backup Eric Kratz.

That's too bad about Krosschell, not that he didn't deserve it. Who's taking his rotation spot: Staggs? Ayala? A non-indy guy?
I was wondering about Holmberg (Ryan Crew had shifted to 2B recently, with Mike Bell promoted to play SS). That's an interesting infield - two juco A-As (Bell and Matt Gamel), a guy who hit over .370 last year (Holmberg) and a guy who might have been the best player in an underrated conference (Crew, the Southland).

Rocco Baldelli was supposed to start a rehab assignment at Montgomery on Sunday, but didn't; he's still having hammy problems.

Joel Santo. He's scheduled to start against Beloit tomorrow.

Aubrey Huff is expected to report to Visalia on Wednesday for a rehab assignment. Julio Lugo may also head out for a rehab assignment this week.

Todd Helton will begin a rehab assignment tomorrow night for Colorado Springs.

Witasick's still not close AFAICT, so sure, give Roney a shot. He's older than Casilla though, and certainly older than Garcia.

Wichita activates P Barry Armitage from the DL, and places IF Donnie Murphy on the seven day DL. Also, Justin Huber has been summoned from Omaha.

Maroul's interesting, if not all that good. He was named the most outstanding player of the CWS after a career that was long on tools, but short on performance. A roster-filler draftee, team needs caused the Giants to press him into action at short (rather than third) in short-season ball, where he was impressive. At third, he's reportedly has Gold Glove potential. Unfortunately, he seriously lacks plate discipline and is highly unlikely to hit at upper levels - but his glove led BA to name him a top 30 prospect for San Fran.

That's more a commentary on the state of the system. (And yes, he did come in at #30).

I'm happy to see Rundgren get a shot at AAA, and he did manage two hits in his first game for the Isotopes last night. He'll likely return to Zebulon when Andino gets back, though.

Maroul: Yeah, the Giants system sucks depthwise. And Maroul makes an error in his debut (at short).

AAA and AA rosters must be reduced from 24 to 23 by midnight tonight, so there will likely be a flurry of moves.

Former VCU IF Anthony Granato has joined Modesto and is starting at third - he was cut by the Cubs in spring training. Good batting eye, speedy, but no prospect.
   31. Mike Emeigh Posted: May 05, 2006 at 09:19 AM (#2005111)
Rundgren has a three-day pass; he'll be back with the Mudcats Saturday.

Albuquerque Tribune story. For some reason, I didn't think that Bebe Buell was Rex's birth mother; he's barely mentioned at all in Buell's book.

What is the rationale for that rule? Why now?

The minor leaguers don't get as much game action in spring training as do the major leaguers, and typically the minor league pitchers are on very restrictive pitch counts for the first two-three weeks as a result, hence the extra player provides some flexibility to AAA and AA teams, and also lets some pitchers who might otherwise be in extended spring get some work in A-ball while other guys pitch a level higher. The rule allows for AAA and AA teams to carry an extra player for the first month of the season (which actually ends tonight at midnight, not last night).

   34. Der Komminsk-sar Posted: May 05, 2006 at 01:44 PM (#2005344)
Mike, I understand why they reduce it to 23 - but why expand back to 24 later? Worries about overworking pitchers?
   35. Mike Emeigh Posted: May 05, 2006 at 01:57 PM (#2005359)
Mostly, it's to facilitate player movement as the season winds down and the short-season and rookie leagues get closer to the end of their schedules.
