That Charlotte-Toledo game should have free streaming video available here. I think.

Best matchup of the day:

Florida State League, Dunedin at Clearwater: A. J. Burnett versus Cole Hamels.

The Reyes/Tejeda and Slowey/Bailey matchups are pretty interesting, too.

SAL-Hagerstown at Greensboro. Jon Niese v. Chris Volstad
   5. Bull Pain Posted: April 06, 2006 at 12:43 PM (#1942845)
Last year, Dmitri Young hit 3 homers on Opening Day, 2 off Jose Lima. This year, Delmon gets the chance to beat up on Lima Time.
   6. PhillyBooster Posted: April 06, 2006 at 12:44 PM (#1942848)
Not to mention Hennessey/Billingsley, which is a matchup of First Round Draft Picks.

You missed Salt Lake at Tucson in the PCL.

I didn't have announced probables for that one.

Checking SLC's Web site: It looks like the probables are Joe Saunders and Kevin Jarvis.

Sadly, it looks as though several minor league teams are going the way of MLB, and combining their team Web sites with MILB.com.

The Reading Eagle reports that Scott Mathieson is starting for the Reading Phillies. No word on the starter for Bowie.

Huntsville at Mississippi: Ben Sheets vs Sean White. Sheets will be on a 50-pitch limit, then will be replaced by Carlos Villanueva.

Sadly? I think its a great idea to put the website in a common area, so I can actually find it and get information from it. Too often, minor league teams websites look like they get updated on opening day and then forgotten about.

The first Minor League game of the year was a good one for the Twins. 2002 first-rounder Denard Span homered to lead off the first and went 2 for 4, and 2004 first-rounder Glen Perkins had a no-hitter through five before giving up two hits in the sixth and getting pulled.

The bullpen then gave up the lead and they lost 5-2, but I'd be psyched to see two first rounders start out so hot.

Colorado Springs at Tacoma this evening: Miguel Asencio (CSX) vs Clint Nageotte (TAC). Asencsio had a decent spring with the Rox and is trying to re-establish himself.

The Sky Chiefs game is on TV here.

I agree with this. If putting every minor league team site under MILB control means more news items and updated stats, then I'm all for the switch.

Plus, some minor league team sites are *horribly* designed, to the point that it's difficult to navigate.

That would be great if they actually updated it in something close to real time - but they don't. Furthermore, the MILB.com Web sites that I've seen are sadly lacking in "original" content specific to the team.

   22. WTM Posted: April 06, 2006 at 03:43 PM (#1943233)
I agree with Mike. The MILB.com sites generally are vastly inferior to the better independently run team sites, and only a minor upgrade from the really bad team sites. For instance, of the Pirates' top two affiliates, Altoona, which does their own, has a hugely superior site to Indianapolis' MILB site. Much of the content one MILB-run sites is not team-specific and there's little news of any interest that you can't find by going directly to MILB.com itself. Most of the sites look like they're done by people sitting in the MLB offices in NY or wherever who have no familiarity at all with the team itself or the organization it's part of.

Well, well, well...

Albuquerque is starting former Cub prospect Renyel Pinto against Iowa, which just happens to be the Cubs' AAA affiliate. Jae Kuk Ryu is pitching for the I-Cubs.

Wacky end to the Richmond/Buffalo game - RIC 5, BUF 4, Bot 9, 2 Out, runners on 1st and 2nd...
"Jason Cooper reaches on fielding error by first baseman James Jurries. Andy Marte to 2nd. Jose Flores out at home, first baseman James Jurries to second baseman Jonathan Schuerholz to shortstop Tony Pena to catcher Brayan Pena to third baseman Wes Timmons to pitcher Kevin Barry."

Adam Bass is starting for Tennessee tonight in Montgomery; no idea who's going for the Biscuits (could be Jim Magrane).

The Diamondbacks released Noochie Varner.

Ryan Sweeney strikes out swinging

Bottom 1st -

Nook Logan singles on a line drive to right fielder Ryan Sweeney

Nook Logan steals second

Ryan Raburn walks

Nook Logan steals third

Ryan Ludwick strikes out swinging

Ryan Raburn steals second

Josh Phelps strikes out swinging

Alexis Gomez called out on strikes.
   29. The Jerry Royster Experience Posted: April 06, 2006 at 07:03 PM (#1943869)
Ledezma just got pulled after 4 2/3 IP - 1 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 9 K.
   30. Mike Emeigh Posted: April 06, 2006 at 07:22 PM (#1943977)
In progress:

Erie at Harrisburg: Nate (not Dagwood) Bumstead vs Shawn Hill
Portland at Connecticut: David Pauley vs Chris Begg
Trenton at Altoona: Steve White vs Mike Connolly
Chattanooga at Jacksonville: Phil Dumatrait vs Danny Muegge

By the way: Because of the umpires' strike and concerns about repercussions against the fill-ins, MILB.com isn't listing the umpires' names in the online boxes.

More in-progress:

Kinston at Winston-Salem: Sean Smith vs Jack Egbert
Potomac at Salem: Colin balester vs Jimmy Barthmaier (good matchup there)

Fort Myers went with Matt Garza instead of Slowey, against Homer Bailey
Tampa at Lakeland: Brett Smith vs Ed Clelland. Jeff Larish is playing 1B and batting 5th.
Vero Beach at St. Lucie: Scott Elbert vs Mike Pelfrey (6 up, 6 down so far, 2 Ks)
Palm Beach at Jupiter: Erick Haberer vs Gaby Hernandez

South Bend at Dayton: Ed Baeza vs Travis Wood. Jay Bruce delivered an RBI single in his first AB.
Clinton and Burlington have been rained out.

Hagerstown at Greensboro: Jonathon Niese vs Chris Volstad
Kannapolis at Rome (sounds like something from the 1st century AD): Derek Rodriguez vs Chris Vines
Delmarva at West Virginia: David Hernandez vs Kevin Roberts
Savannah at Asheville: Craig Stammen vs Alan Johnson
Lakewood and Lexington are in a rain delay. The listed pitchers are Kyle Kendrick and Levi Romero.

Indianapolis SP Tom Gorzelanny outdueled Pawtucket's Abe Alvarez through 4 before getting pulled with a pitch count of 77. Final line: 4 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 8 K. The only two hits against Alvarez were both solo home runs by Ray Sadler.

Lima Time!

Two dingers allowed in 5 IP, one by Shawn Riggans, one by Darnell McDonald.

The Memphis Oklahoma game is tied at 4 in the 10th. Both starters struggled -- Rob Tejeda moreso than Anthony Reyes -- but their bullpens have bailed them both out so far.
   36. PhillyBooster Posted: April 06, 2006 at 10:51 PM (#1944746)
Clearwater/Dunedin Report -- Cole Hamels is dominant: 7Ks over 6 IP with 3 hits, no walks, and no runs. A.J. Burnett gives up one run over 4 IP. Both starters. Hamels's bullpen gives up a run and vultures a win, but very nice to see Cole pitch well and not get injured.

Lima Time!

More important from that game, Chad Orvella pitched two no-hit innings, which helps his case to make it back as Tampa's closer -- where everyone assumed he'd end up during Spring Training.
