Four Frederick pitchers combined to no-hit Salem today. Radhames Liz fanned 13 in five innings.

Gotta be the Mazzone effect.

Seriously, I haven't seen him pitch, but Liz is supposed to have a great arm.

Wow! Bryan Bass is still in baseball and only in High A. Bass was way ahead of Ryan Theriot out of H.S. and Team U.S.A. Back in 2002 Bryan was a switch hitter with a doofus flail from one side. Good start to 2006.

Minor league transactions:

Colorado recalls Ramon Ramirez (not the one just suspended, obviously) from Colorado Springs, LHP Justin Hampson is activated by the Sky Sox.

C Jose Lobaton and INF Jodam Rivera were added to Lake Elsinore's roster.

Jason LaRue will be rehabbing in Sarasota.

OF Maikel Jova has been sent to Dunedin; he was on New Hampshire's restricted list.

LHP Brandon Parillo has been placed on the DL by West Virginia; he has been replaced by LHP Joe Thatcher, who the Brewers signed out of the Frontier League in the offseason.

Cincinnati released C German Menendez, sent RHP Andy Weimer back to extended spring, and added RHP Jeff Stevens (6th rounder in 2005 and RHP Bo Lanier (10th rounder in 2005) to Dayton's roster.

Liz does - consistently in the mid 90s when I saw him. He pretty much threw just the fastball, but it didn't seem to be a problem. If he makes the bigs, my wife is getting his jersey, whether she wants it or not.
Apparently, the way to defend in the "field of nightmares" is to strikeout half your opponents.

Wes Bankston made another error at third today - the experiment is not faring well in the early going.

Aubrey Huff revisited.

Mike, did you get those from milb.com? I noticed they've started to populate the transaction sheets again.
   9. Mike Emeigh Posted: April 12, 2006 at 04:39 PM (#1958390)
Mike, did you get those from milb.com?

Yes, indeed. With the MiLB.com site revamp still in process, though, a couple of the leagues are hard to find.

MiLB.com and Our Sports Central are two indispensible resources for minor league info. The latter gives you lots of links to local newspaper articles about the teams, some of which aren't exactly well-known.

Or 72%.
Well, Montani and company helped.

I'm sure you've seen more of Bankston than I have, Mike, but does he look like a third baseman to you? Huff is a little awkward, but seemed like a third baseman, just not a good one. Bankston - I dunno, I'm no scout - but I don't see it.

He doesn't even look like a first baseman to me, which is why the 3B experiment came as a major surprise.

I'll second that - I've got both bookmarked at work (which, in retrospect, is probably dumb).

Hey, one of my guys (of course, I've got a lot of guys), J.R. Towles had another nice day for Lexington - 2/2, hr, sb, 2 hbp, threw out a runner. Has anyone looked at how guys who rack up huge hbp totals in the low minors do as they advance? I can't imagine that they progress very nicely - seems like upper level pitchers could find something to exploit there (as with Corky Miller, not that he was ever a big time hitter). Maybe Quentin will make a good test case.

Well he definitely has a great name. Frederick's not far from me, and Bowie's real close, so I may get to catch him sometime this season.

This is the organization that keeps trying Aubrey Huff at 3B, so their standards might not be very high.

Carlos Marmol and Garrett Mock had quite the duel in Sevierville today:

Marmol: 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K
Mock: 7 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K

Mock got a win, Marmol a ND. The Smokies picked up two runs off Lincoln Holzcom in the seventh for the win.

MiLB.com is listing Cory Morris (just sent back down from Baltimore) as Ottawa's probable starter instead of Piersoll.

Marc Deschenes will be starting for Pawtucket against Dennys Reyes of Rochester. Can the PawSox actually score more runs than their 1.17 RPG average so far? Other than Ron Calloway (hitting .312 but batting seventh against the lefty) and Jeff Bailey, no one in Pawtucket's lineup has an OPS over .700, and four of tonight's starters are below .600.

This matchup will be on MiLB.TV tonight - a chance to see Felix Pie live and in person.

Why? Is her name Radhames, too?

If only there were such a thing as a pitching prospect, the O's would have a few...

Phil Hughes through 4: 2 hits, 1 BB, only 1 K. Tampa leads 1-0.

Russ Johnson is halfway to a cycle in Columbus, and he has the hard half - a triple and HR.

   22. Mike Emeigh Posted: April 12, 2006 at 08:18 PM (#1958956)
Glen Perkins threw 57 pitches in two innings for New Britain today, and didn't come out for the third. He allowed four hits, walked 2, hit a batter, fanned 5, and escaped with just one run allowed.

We could have a shutout quadrifecta in the Carolina League:

Frederick wins 3-0 over Salem.
Winston-Salem wins 4-0 over Myrtle Beach.
Potomac beats Lynchburg 5-0.
Kinston leads Wilmington 2-0 in the sixth.

Real pitcher's duel b/w Bakersfield and Visalia - the Blaze win 17-15, and outhomer them 8-1. Reid Brignac hits 3.

Actually, the Blaze lost 17-15; Visalia is the Oaks.

Windsor and Rall combined for a one hitter for Midland last night. I'm guessing the A's would like to see what Windsor can do at AAA this year, but the Sactramento rotation is currently full of better pitchers.
