Movement of note:

Nomar Garciaparra will be on a rehab assignment with Las Vegas. He's expected to play tonight and tomorrow night and could be activated for the weekend in LA if all goes well.

Todd Linden has been placed on the DL at Fresno.

Travis Chapman has been DLd at Altoona after having his right wrist fractured by a Tyler Clippard pitch. Chaz Lytle was activated from the DL to replace him.

Mark Newman is quoted in the Trentonian today that Philip Hughes will be moved up to Trenton within a month, possibly within the next two weeks.

Harrisburg activated OF Alex Escobar from the DL, placing OF Christian Guerrero on the DL to make room.

Atlanta promoted OF Barbaro Canizares from Myrtle beach to Mississippi. Ardley Jansen will be activated from the DL to replace Canizares.

Reposted from the other thread.

Interesting interview with a minor league umpire.

I liked this bit from the FSL's Pat O'Conner:

"We sell the sizzle instead of the game. We have parties 70 times a summer and we happen to play a baseball game around that.

No wonder it's hard to find out any information about the "baseball" being played in the FSL. The FSL team Web sites, by and large, suck big time, as does the local newspaper coverage.

I think the Linden injury was a week and a half or so ago - interesting that either the move or the reporting of it is happening now.
I wonder if Todd Williams has ever started before?
Midland's Kurt Suzuki has had a nice start to the season - last night was the first time he's struck out all year (against 10 walks - he's at .364/.491/.500), while throwing out 6 of 9 runners.

More movement:

Chad Orvella recalled by TB from Durham, Jason Hammel sent down (no surprise there)

Matt Kata sent down by Cincy to Louisville, Jeff Bannon sent from the Bats to extended spring

Joey Devine sent to extended spring from Richmond, Phil Stockman promoted from Mississippi

Oscar Robles recalled by LA, Sergio Garcia (not that one; this one is a utility player) promoted from Jacksonville to Las Vegas

INF Bernie Castro goes on the DL at New Orleans, replaced by INF Greg Thissen from Potomac

Larry Bigbie is rehabbing at Memphis.

Marlins recall Randy Messenger and Matt Cepicky (this was a couple of days ago but just hit the site), activate C/OF Chris Ashby and P Josh Stewart from the DL at Albuquerque.

Brad Sullivan, the A's #1 draft pick in 2003 (year 1 post-Moneyball, drafted three slots ahead of Daric Barton) was sent to extended spring from Stockton with yet another injury.

If the information I have is correct from when Todd Williams was on Durham in '03, he has 1 career start, a 2 inning stint for the GCL Yanks in 2001. With his recent MLB experience, he should be over 700 career professional relief appearances.

Justin Leone: 2-3 with a double and a walk today. He is now hitting .500/.574/.962.

Astros released P Ben Diggins. Diggins was, at one point, a highly regarded Dodger pitching prospect (their #1 in 2000) who got a cup of coffee with the Brewers in 2002, but shredded his elbow and never really came back from TJ surgery. He tried it as a position player for a while last year, going 4-18 with 9 Ks at Brevard County.

Tampa sold the contract of P Justin Miller to Chiba Lotte (Japan).

If you were planning to go to Frederick on Friday night for their post-game fireworks show, don't bother.

Royals promoted OF Juan Senreiso from High Desert to Wichita.

I posted this in the dugout, but its more appropriate here:

From the Play-by-play man for the High Desert Mavs of the California League:

Also, this was without a doubt the wackiest Cal League game I've ever seen, and that's about the friendliest way of saying it. We had local high school umpires filling in for the umps on strike, and their strike zone was, to say the least, inconsistent. Both teams had to constantly tell the umps where to stand on the infield in situations with runners on base, and there were two times in the game where neither the field umpire nor the home plate umpire made immediate fair/foul decisions on balls hit sharply down the line. The coaches and players aren't allowed to comment on the scab umps, but according to one source on the team who has been around this game for, well, quite some time, it was the most poorly officiated game he had ever seen.

Situation: Jose Campusano at the plate with an 0-2 count. Jacksonville pitcher Mark Alexander throws a pitch that breaks sharply down and in. Campusano turned on the pitch as if to swing and brought the bat forward, but then jackknifed away, and the ball hit him on the foot. As he was headed down the line to 1B, the plate ump rang him up on strike 3.

Now it was certainly arguable whether or not Campusano actually did swing (I thought he did, FWIW), but there was no way that the plate umpire could have seen it clearly enough to make a definitive ruling, with Campusano's body in the way. That's what Luis Dorante argued, and I don't know exactly what the plate ump said, but it was enough to bring pitching coach Rich Gale out of the dugout with smoke coming out of his nostrils, and Gale was eventually tossed after (apparently) bumping the 1B umpire who was trying to intervene.

More on #14:

According to the N&O;this morning, Mudcats' manager Luis Dorante says that the 3B umpire told him that Campusano did not swing. In that case, I can understand why Dorante and Gale were so upset - but the 3B umpire was in the wrong for making that statement. While a call of "no swing" from the HP umpire is appealable, a call of "swing" is not. Once the HP umpire ruled that Campusano offered at the pitch, the 3B umpire's sole job was to support his colleague. If the 3B umpire disagreed with the call, what he should have said was "That's his call to make, and he made it" - or words to that effect.

This is going to be a recurring theme until the strike is settled, I think. The problem here is not so much that the replacement umpires don't know the rules, but that they don't know how to handle situations arising from their calls. Most HS associations prevent coaches from going out on the field to argue calls, and the NCAA has a code of ethics that restricts arguments to rule interpretations only; coaches are not permitted to argue judgment calls.
