Nomar Garciaparra will be on a rehab assignment with Las Vegas. He's expected to play tonight and tomorrow night and could be activated for the weekend in LA if all goes well.
Todd Linden has been placed on the DL at Fresno.
Travis Chapman has been DLd at Altoona after having his right wrist fractured by a Tyler Clippard pitch. Chaz Lytle was activated from the DL to replace him.
Mark Newman is quoted in the Trentonian today that Philip Hughes will be moved up to Trenton within a month, possibly within the next two weeks.
Harrisburg activated OF Alex Escobar from the DL, placing OF Christian Guerrero on the DL to make room.
Atlanta promoted OF Barbaro Canizares from Myrtle beach to Mississippi. Ardley Jansen will be activated from the DL to replace Canizares.

Also, this was without a doubt the wackiest Cal League game I've ever seen, and that's about the friendliest way of saying it. We had local high school umpires filling in for the umps on strike, and their strike zone was, to say the least, inconsistent. Both teams had to constantly tell the umps where to stand on the infield in situations with runners on base, and there were two times in the game where neither the field umpire nor the home plate umpire made immediate fair/foul decisions on balls hit sharply down the line. The coaches and players aren't allowed to comment on the scab umps, but according to one source on the team who has been around this game for, well, quite some time, it was the most poorly officiated game he had ever seen.
Now it was certainly arguable whether or not Campusano actually did swing (I thought he did, FWIW), but there was no way that the plate umpire could have seen it clearly enough to make a definitive ruling, with Campusano's body in the way. That's what Luis Dorante argued, and I don't know exactly what the plate ump said, but it was enough to bring pitching coach Rich Gale out of the dugout with smoke coming out of his nostrils, and Gale was eventually tossed after (apparently) bumping the 1B umpire who was trying to intervene.

According to the N&O;this morning, Mudcats' manager Luis Dorante says that the 3B umpire told him that Campusano did not swing. In that case, I can understand why Dorante and Gale were so upset - but the 3B umpire was in the wrong for making that statement. While a call of "no swing" from the HP umpire is appealable, a call of "swing" is not. Once the HP umpire ruled that Campusano offered at the pitch, the 3B umpire's sole job was to support his colleague. If the 3B umpire disagreed with the call, what he should have said was "That's his call to make, and he made it" - or words to that effect.
This is going to be a recurring theme until the strike is settled, I think. The problem here is not so much that the replacement umpires don't know the rules, but that they don't know how to handle situations arising from their calls. Most HS associations prevent coaches from going out on the field to argue calls, and the NCAA has a code of ethics that restricts arguments to rule interpretations only; coaches are not permitted to argue judgment calls.
