Fun times in Five County last night:

On a 2-0 pitch leading off the bottom of the third, Carolina's Edgar Gonzalez was hit on the arm by Chattanooga's Eddy Valdez. Gonzalez charged the mound and attempted to land a karate kick on Valdez, missing badly. Both benches cleared, and the two potagonists were ejected. Chattanooga's Aaron Herr left the game at the same time, apparently being hurt in the brawl.

In the fourth inning, Carolina's Lee Mitchell lined a single to right with runners on first and second. Kevin Randel was waved around, and appeared to slide around the throw to the plate, but the plate umpire called Randel out. Mudcat manager Luis Dorante went into orbit, charged the plate umpire, appeared to bump him and was instantly booted. Dorante did his best Earl Weaver imitation, covering the plate with dirt.

In the bottom of the fifth, Chattanooga's Brad Salmon gave up a leadoff single to Jonathan Aceves and then threw ball one to Jamie Athas. Lookout manager Jayhawk Owens came out to the mound and talked to Salmon, deliberately stalling to get the umpire out to the mound, and then when the umpire wouldn't bite, took a couple of steps toward the plate ump and said something that got him ejected as well.

There will be some suspensions here, I'm sure.

Oh yeah. The game lasted 3 hours and 48 minutes, and Chattanooga protested it after Valdez was tossed.

If you want to listen to the game clip, go here, select May 12 from the calendar, scroll down to the Mudcats game and click on the WDNZ link. The brawl is about 1:25 into the game, Dorante's ejection is at about 2:25, and Owens's ejection is about 2:37 in. Patrick Kinas's comment was that this game was a textbook example of umpires losing control.
