MLB Draft Thread

The Rule 4 draft (AKA baseball’s amateur draft) will be held on Tuesday, June 6 and Wednesday, June 7.

MLB.com will be doing a live feed this year, beginning at noon on Tuesday. The entire first round will be announced live by MLB’s exec VP for baseball operations, Jimmie Lee Solomon, exclusively on MLB.com beginning just before 1. MLB.tv will be covering the first five rounds of the draft, and MLB Radio will have the entire draft. (IIRC, XM channel 175 had the whole thing last year, and will probably carry it again).

John Sickels and the regulars conducted their five-round mock draft over at Minor League Ball over the weekend.

First round.
Supplemental 1st round.
2nd round.
3rd round.
4th round.
5th round.

Some interesting choices in there.

BA’s Will Lingo speculated that KC may (again) be moving away from Andrew Miller for the #1 overall pick. The sticking point appears to be financial, of course:

Miller reportedly wants a major league contract, the price of which started at $6 million and may now be eight figures. At the same time, Kansas City doesn’t want to exceed the $4 million bonus it paid a year ago to No. 2 overall pick Alex Gordon, considered a superior talent to Miller.

I certainly wouldn’t want to pay more for Miller than Gordon.

Lingo also comments on a possible reason why some high-profile draft-and-follows (hello, Beato) didn’t sign:

MLB, which has established a system of recommended bonuses for every pick through the first 10 rounds, also provided bonus recommendations for significant draft-and-follows this year, sources said.

Those recommendations apparently played a big role in the Mets’ decision not to sign righthander Pedro Beato, and the Devil Rays’ decision not to sign righthander Bryan Morris. Both are potential first-round picks in this year’s draft.

BA has its complete list of confirmed draft-and-follow signings from the 2005 draft, along with fifth-year seniors who signed.

Johnson appears, from the scouting report, to be a typical Atlanta pick - toolsy, athletic OF with raw power who needs work on pitch recognition.

From various sites I'm looking at, McCulloch seems very Lance Broadway-ish. As BA mentioned, he's a safe pick. I would've rather had Beato or Huff, but I'm not disappointed in McCulloch.

"30 (Cardinals) - Adam Ottavino, RHP, Northeastern - huge college numbers in a weak conference, but did well against good competition."

But shut down good teams when he got the chance. He no-hit Ga Tech (top 5 hitting team) for seven innings beofre losing the game 2-1 and then 2 weeks later no-hit James Madison (the top hitting team in the country at that point) for nine innings

Hm, no Chamberlain yet?

Northeastern is also a big time pitcher's park.

Sighhhh.
Thats just blatantly untrue.
It's all about what "no results" means. If you want to be literal, sure, ok, he pitched well at times.

But regardless, the point of Bard is his upside, not his current production. Bard's draft stock was not driven by what he achieved at UNC.

"Height, relatively high walk totals, funky delivery, high pitch counts, projected to be a reliever."

But more than anything its

Johnson was the best amateur player in the country last summer, as a young 16 year old. He tore up consecutive PG weeks, 18-under and 17-under. The EC Astros won the 17-under as 16s.

Conger is Korean-America? I had no idea. Cool! He'd be the first American born of Korean descent in the big leagues wouldn't he?
   212. JC in DC Posted: June 06, 2006 at 01:41 PM (#2053575)
The Kennedy/Bard thing is interesting. The Yanks took Bard previously, so there must be something about him they don't like. I don't quite get the Kennedy pick, however.

"Who knew that Miller asking for $8M would backfire on him?"

But will it? Where Miller is picked won't affect his cash

So Huff, Beato, and Anderson are all still available. I can't imagine the Yankees not picking one of those 3 if they're still there for the Yanks' next pick.

I hate the Tigers right now.

Don't you have to get the players permission to draft him a second time?

Boy, Rich Lederer really doesn't like the Royals taking Hochevar.

25 (Angels) - Hyun Choi (Hank) Conger, HS C - best hitting catcher in the draft class, compared to Daric Barton

Is he Asian, or a psuedo-Asian like Kurt Suzuki?

27 (Red Sox) - Jason Place, HS CF - good bat, but a dead pull hitter

Is he any good

28 (Red Sox) - Daniel Bard, UNC RHP - how did he drop here??

Is he Craig Hansen-esque?

I just want more fat Jewish college 3B

Not Betances? It would be fun to have a city kid (and I don't count Beato; he's from Queens).

No doubt, Mike.

I was just pointing out that despite him being "raw", which I wouldn't disagree with, he has as much performance as any HS player on the board (except perhaps for Sapp and Drabek).

Been driving me crazy whose uni Deric Ladnier is standing in front of while being interviewed on MLB.com. All I could think of was Justin Leone, but I'm pretty sure a) he's never played for the Royals, and b) wouldn't have his jersey in glass in the Royals offices.

"t's all about what "no results" means. If you want to be literal, sure, ok, he pitched well at times."

3.47 ERA in the ACC. more than 9 K per 9. 3/1 K/BB.
I'd take his numbers over Greg Reynolds anyday and no ones bringing up Reynolds career or season numbers as a negative (for some reason).

"But regardless, the point of Bard is his upside, not his current production. Bard's draft stock was not driven by what he achieved at UNC."

sure. Because if thats the case Jonathan Hovis would be the #1 overall pick.
Either him or Robert Woodard.

Wow, this is weird. Defending anything related to Carolina makes me sick

The only one in the state of Colorado which is a shame cos that state plays good HS ball. Nebraska certainly doesn't mind though, as this lets them cherry pick alot of the top Denver players.

Oh great, another guy for Tiger lovers to hype up.

Come on. Two good months and we're the Yankees now? There's more KC fans than Tigers fans on this site (I count 6). Should I be as excited about Miller as I am? Is he a Boras client?

Mike Felix, Troy's closer, to the Pirates. Interesting pick, to say the least. Not a particularly high ceiling.
