MLB Draft Thread
The Rule 4 draft (AKA baseball’s amateur draft) will be held on Tuesday, June 6 and Wednesday, June 7.
MLB.com will be doing a live feed this year, beginning at noon on Tuesday. The entire first round will be announced live by MLB’s exec VP for baseball operations, Jimmie Lee Solomon, exclusively on MLB.com beginning just before 1. MLB.tv will be covering the first five rounds of the draft, and MLB Radio will have the entire draft. (IIRC, XM channel 175 had the whole thing last year, and will probably carry it again).
John Sickels and the regulars conducted their five-round mock draft over at Minor League Ball over the weekend.
First round.
Supplemental 1st round.
2nd round.
3rd round.
4th round.
5th round.
Some interesting choices in there.
BA’s Will Lingo speculated that KC may (again) be moving away from Andrew Miller for the #1 overall pick. The sticking point appears to be financial, of course:
Miller reportedly wants a major league contract, the price of which started at $6 million and may now be eight figures. At the same time, Kansas City doesn’t want to exceed the $4 million bonus it paid a year ago to No. 2 overall pick Alex Gordon, considered a superior talent to Miller.
I certainly wouldn’t want to pay more for Miller than Gordon.
Lingo also comments on a possible reason why some high-profile draft-and-follows (hello, Beato) didn’t sign:
MLB, which has established a system of recommended bonuses for every pick through the first 10 rounds, also provided bonus recommendations for significant draft-and-follows this year, sources said.
Those recommendations apparently played a big role in the Mets’ decision not to sign righthander Pedro Beato, and the Devil Rays’ decision not to sign righthander Bryan Morris. Both are potential first-round picks in this year’s draft.
BA has its complete list of confirmed draft-and-follow signings from the 2005 draft, along with fifth-year seniors who signed.

Does Matt LaPorta relive the Jeff Larish career path?

so, robinson to kc. wow, didn't see that coming.

walden: i agree w/ you, mike.
Larish seemed like more of a polished hitter, a James Loney/Doug Mentkiewicz type. LaPorta seems like an all-or-nothing power guy, with very few other hitting skills. I wouldn't mind the Sox taking somewhere in the next couple of rounds. They've got very few big power guys in the system.
though i wouldn't mind if they had to come back to school
Another low-ceiling starting pitcher in the fine mold of Brian Bullington.

Creech must be crushed.
Larish has a bit of a big, stupid swing - albeit with pitch recognition. Minority opinion, but I'd consider giving LaPorta a shot behind the plate, if I don't have depth there.
Blake Davis > Adam Davis
At least he wasn't picked at the top of the first round.
There have been multiple players named Blake drafted. Who names his kid Blake?
I think whoever is picked last in Baseball deserves a bigger party.
What do people think of Marcus Lemon? I'm mildly bullish.
Scout.com only has Robinson as a 3-star DB and the lowest ranked of the 6 DBs Florida signed in the '06 class. Armed, as I am, with only that knowledge I thnk there's got to be some chance that he signs with KC.
Well, yeah, but do the Pirates really *need* any more low-ceiling pitchers and middle infielders?

He's told scouts that he really does want to play baseball.

Hayden Penn came from a school shooting HS...Santee HS in San Deigo
Sure, in that a kick in the knee is better than a kick in the groin.
I don't think there are many 3-star high school DBs that are very good at tackling people.
I wish they would do me a favor and draft Betances.

Why would you want to chat with Keith Law when you can chat with us?? :)

Great opportunity to ask why he'd leave such a high-paying high-profile job at the Jays for a crappy ESPN writing gig.
Hey! Leave both of us alone!
Great opportunity to ask why he'd leave such a high-paying high-profile job at the Jays for a crappy ESPN writing gig.
That's hilarious. But why even ask? kevin could go tell him why he left for such a crappy job.
Excellent question.... I read him while this page is refreshing. :)
Thoughts?
So all the top 4 picks were pre-draft deals? why didn't Rockies take Longoria for the same money?
Also any news on how much Miller is going to ask for from the Tigers?
Dodgers seem to have a pretty good draft going

i like the Rasmus pick, though looks like a bit of an overdraft
dolittle: i'll predict he's a 2nd rd pick next year.
Blargh.
Grady's brother?
Studly.
I was hoping the Braves would sign him out of HS.
I think hes gotta be a pitcher since hes a lefty who can strikeout bunches of hitters and isn't the great hitter you'd want from 1b/of early in the 1st round.
The Draft Tracker has been excellent this year, best it's ever been. Like I said before, kudos.
The Cubs love them their Fightin' Irish. IIRC, Notre Dame right-hander Grant Johnson was their first-round pick in '04.
Grady's brother?
maybe related to tom sizemore?
RHP Harold Mozingo, VCU
1B Lars Anderson, HS (CA)
1B Matt LaPorta, Florida
RHP Jeff Manship, Notre Dame
I had them all ranked pretty high.
did i hear thatright?
berry to phi, what a shock. [/sarcasm]

Im more than a little underwhelmed
if the Cubs are going to offer a huge signing bonus, why not try that with some big name in the first round?!
Where did Melancon go?
No, he's still there.

New Mexico State, Infielder, Height: 6-1, Weight: 240, Junior, Bats: L, Throws: R
2006 stats: 403/548/799, 60 for 149, 16 HR, 11 doubles, 53 walks, 27 strikeouts.
NMSU went 19-36, and their pitchers had a team ERA of 7.64, NMSU batters inflicted an ERA of 5.82 on their opponents.
Mitchell to OAK shocked me - BA didn't have him as one of the top 20 prospects in the state. From my alma mater, he gets on base, has solid range, and decent speed - but his arm is blah, he's not steady in the outfield, and lacks power.
LaPorta has not been chosen yet. He's apparently asking for a ton of money.
There are several Andersons in play, but Brett has been chosen (55). Lars remains available.
You can sort the picks by name in mlb.com's draft tracker.

Did BA mention Starnes at all?
I feel bad for that kid
Yankees take another Illinois guy, George Kontos out of Northwestern.
White Sox go with Kentucky second baseman John Shelby, son of former major leaguer John Shelby. Hit .291/.388/.629 with 18 homers for the Wildcats. Ranked 158 by BA. Nice pick, though he may have trouble staying at second.
Not that I can find.
-- MWE
"Did BA mention Starnes at all?"
Nope - I feel for him too.
Kontos is a draft-eligible soph who projects as a reliever. Two plus pitches, no reliable third pitch, and problems repeating his delivery.

Pirates take Negrych.

101 K in 95 2/3 innings in 2006, 101 K in 92 1/3 innings in 2005, 82 K in 75 innings in 2004
exciting cricket match on, i will be back in a bit :)
Still no Morris.
Dude woulda been a 1st rounder if he was draft eligible halfway through his freshman year and was in the top 15 freshman prospects by BA after that year.
I'd love him to come back though.
He really meant a lot to the program, he burst on the the scene and really helped carry the Dogs from SEC also-rans to a legit top program
Finally, a good pick for the Royals. They must be scouting heavily in Virginia this year.
Royals Corner scouted Mozingo earlier this year:
Royals Corner
mozingo - same people who liked godin, liked mozingo.
I fine with either but not both so early.
Plus if we really needed college lefties we have Will Startup whos much better than either (granted, im biased)
