MLB Draft Thread
The Rule 4 draft (AKA baseball’s amateur draft) will be held on Tuesday, June 6 and Wednesday, June 7.
MLB.com will be doing a live feed this year, beginning at noon on Tuesday. The entire first round will be announced live by MLB’s exec VP for baseball operations, Jimmie Lee Solomon, exclusively on MLB.com beginning just before 1. MLB.tv will be covering the first five rounds of the draft, and MLB Radio will have the entire draft. (IIRC, XM channel 175 had the whole thing last year, and will probably carry it again).
John Sickels and the regulars conducted their five-round mock draft over at Minor League Ball over the weekend.
First round.
Supplemental 1st round.
2nd round.
3rd round.
4th round.
5th round.
Some interesting choices in there.
BA’s Will Lingo speculated that KC may (again) be moving away from Andrew Miller for the #1 overall pick. The sticking point appears to be financial, of course:
Miller reportedly wants a major league contract, the price of which started at $6 million and may now be eight figures. At the same time, Kansas City doesn’t want to exceed the $4 million bonus it paid a year ago to No. 2 overall pick Alex Gordon, considered a superior talent to Miller.
I certainly wouldn’t want to pay more for Miller than Gordon.
Lingo also comments on a possible reason why some high-profile draft-and-follows (hello, Beato) didn’t sign:
MLB, which has established a system of recommended bonuses for every pick through the first 10 rounds, also provided bonus recommendations for significant draft-and-follows this year, sources said.
Those recommendations apparently played a big role in the Mets’ decision not to sign righthander Pedro Beato, and the Devil Rays’ decision not to sign righthander Bryan Morris. Both are potential first-round picks in this year’s draft.
BA has its complete list of confirmed draft-and-follow signings from the 2005 draft, along with fifth-year seniors who signed.

That's just to differentiate it from Venezuelan Christian Academy, which is also in Alabama.
Cards draft another guy without a school.
Yeah, the Cardinals drafted a 27 year old right fielder out of Florida.
no danny ray herrera yet. fellow new mexican brian flores didn't go either (i wonder how much he asked the white sox for).
Unreal.

Currently, 285 Div1 schools sponsor baseball, with 876 NCAA schools sponsoring baseball in total. 212 NAIA schools sponsor baseball.
A few NAIA schools you may recognize: Azusa Pacific (Christian Okoye's Alma Mater), Hastings (I forget what they did, but I remember it).. and that's it.
The NAIA also allows you to see which players make the most steal attempts, but not which players have the most walks.
The #2 guy for steals in the NAIA is Jarrod Stahl, a 5'9/160lb Senior who bats right and throws right. Fun facts about Jarrod include "Met with President Bill Clinton after I had saved a persons life!" and "Enjoys underwater basketweaving"
Clearly two things which make him very draftable. Although the "My favorite player is Juan Pierre" thing could be a bad sign. Stahl is 46 for 52 in stealing bases.
Ben Jukich, the 398th pick of the Draft, is an NAIA pitcher for Dakota Wesleyan. Jukich struck out 144 and walked 15 in 94 2/3 innings. Jukich is also a Junior, which means he'll choose between one more glorious year of DWU, or going into the A's system.
Being really awesome at pitching against D3 kids is more likely to get you drafted than being really awesome at hitting against D3 kids.
After all, Kurt Kapferer did hit 18 HR this year in 147 AB, but he's also a 6'7/260lb first baseman. So he's not that hot. His line for 2006: 388/511/823, 10 doubles, 18 homers, 31 walks, 9 HBP, 34 strikeouts.
The Wooster Fighting Scots will probably not contribute to the second day of the draft.
The HBP rates in Div-3 Baseball are crazy.
The "Per game" leaders are Jason Vick of Utica/Rome and Brandon Boesiger of Wooster. Vick was hit 21 times in 30 games, Boesiger was hit 30 times in 43 games.
Danner Partidge of Manchester was hit 29 times in 43 games.
Gega Arby of Baruch was hit 19 times in 29 games.
Nick Crawford of Millsaps was hit 32 times in 50 games
Jason Pollard of Renssetaer was hit 27 times in 44 games.
Div-3 is either the land of the "guy who leans in on the inside pitch" or the land of "wild pitchers"
So anyways.. who goes first on Day Two: Jeffrey Maier or Danny Almonte?
I didn't say that it wasn't fair use - what I said was that it was a violation of the terms of service for the subscription site. That's a different issue, and while I would prefer that sites not have *premium content*, I understand the reasons for it and respect the site owners' right to charge for the information there, and to restrict how premium content may be used elsewhere.

A 27 year old right fielder out of Cuba by way of Florida.
Maybe the college started in Louisiana and then moved to Utah. It's been known to happen.
"Dixie is the nickname for southwestern Utah. It was first settled in the early 1860s, when farmers were sent south by Brigham Young to grow cotton, hoping to capitalize on the lack of availability of cotton due to the American Civil War. Thus the name Dixie, to honor the attempt to grow cotton, and its association with the Dixie in the southeastern United States. Yields in the test fields were not as high as expected, and economic viability of growing cotton was never achieved."
Signability, I presume. Draft-eligible sophomores (Watson was redshirted and has two years of eligibility left) tend to fall.

A bit on Kimutis:
Brian's BOS line for 2006: .272/.408/.351 with 23 walks, 22 HBP, 27 strikeouts, 3 GDP, and 52 hits in 191 AB.
And Detroit picks UNM first baseman Chris Carlson. Carlson fell so low due to altitude, and him being a Junior.
Oh yeah, I changed my mind and went to KFC and I got two buffalo snackers.
Cox hasn't done particularly well in summer leagues - he's played in the Coastal Plains League, which is not one of the better summer leagues, the last two years and hit just .218 there a year ago - and the concern is that he won't be able to generate enough bat speed to hit with the wood bat. I think it's a legit concern; he's generated most of his power going the other way.

This will forever answer the question "Can players from Las Cruces (altitude 3896ft) hit in Idaho Falls (altitude 4701ft)?"
Waitaminute.. the Royals rookie league team is in an area which is higher than Las Cruces?
.319/.370/.457 could mean more for a catcher, even if it's in New Mexico
Collegio de la Immaculada!
that could compete with "College of the Desert" for 'most obscure college that the Royals picked a guy from'
Oh, so its like Tennessee

The catch?
Van Ostrand is 6'6"
I thought you were a Pennridge guy. Would you be South or West if you were there now? We're in Pennridge, but some of our land is in West, just across the road.
Is Rowan University's nickname really the Profs?

With the 935th pick, Florida picked William Mays out of Sinclair CC (Kentucky). The odds of him being as good as the other guy who goes by "Will" and "Mays" are set somewhere between 0.0000000000000000000000000000001% and 0.00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001%. Place your bets.

Nope, CB West all the way. I still live in West territory too, my little brother goes there now.
Now let me think, if you are West/Pennridge land, you must live near Township Line Road in Chalfont.
He was picked last year but was supposed to end up at Kentucky. Guess he wanted to try out DFEing.
Supposed to be a decent player actually.

That would make him end up with the Cardinals. Can't imagine *that* would be a good fit.

Game, set, and Mach?
What's slot money for the 43rd round? Three items of the draftee's choice from the Dollar Menu at McDonalds?
-- MWE
-- MWE
Whats the point of doingthat exactly? Why not grab 7 more guys to DFE just so you have more options on who to spend your money on next spring?
The Truckers!
Kelly Sweppenhiser (Toronto, 3B) v. Brad Schwarzenbach (New York Mets, RHP)
I really don't know. I suppose that since that vast majority of kids drafted in the last 10-15 rounds don't even make a roster, Beane sees no point in wasting time down there. A lot of these guys won't even be DFEs.

The Braves pick Kris Cichoski again, they got him last year too im pretty sure.
The Braves picked a 1b named Daniel Rios out of HS and JC consective years, didnt sign him either time. Hes now not hitting in the Pirates chain
-- MWE
They did, in the 21st round.

I know Citadel guys can go right into pro ball. They have a decent draft prospect every now and then (Chris Morris and most famously Dallas McPherson)
His HS co-ace at suburban ATL powerhouse Lassiter Kyle Muscara was a 40th-something rounder of the Rockies out of HS who went to Florida and promptly had Tommy John (just like Goodman). Got his scholarship pulled (classy move there Gators) and wound up back home at Kennesaw St. Struggled this year.
That HS team had 10 guys who would go on to play college baseball, 9 of them at D-I programs. 3 of them were pitchers. The best colege pitcher of the bunch probably hasn't been either of the co-aces (Goodman or Muscara) but the LOOGY Michael Zaret whos at Princeton mostly BC of health but hes had some injuries too (blood clots or something)
Plus 2 freshman or sophs from that team played JV mst of the time with an occasional varsity appearence are going to go to SEC programs next fall.
Well, he is pretty fat.
Oh.. wait.. the other John Goodman!
The Blue Jays draft a 6'2"/275lb first baseman.
Thrilling!
"Arizona selects.. draft #7424 Tucker, Billy Joe. First Baseman. Fernancisco Valley Community College."
Community College, that is.
