NCAA Tournament

The field of 64 has been announced.

The NCAA rewarded teams that played tough schedules this year, leaving out schools like Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia Tech, and putting Memphis and Troy in the field primarily because of their decision to schedule top-50 teams rather than lesser Division I lights.

Rice, the #2 overall seed, got screwed a little bit, I think. TCU has a very good team, and Baylor can also play with a lot of teams, as they demonstrated by marching to the Big 12 title game. If Ryne Tacker isn’t healthy (he left his start in the C-USA tournament early with arm trouble), the Owls might not even escape their regional, and they could definitely have some problems with Texas A&M (which looks like a strong favorite to win its regional).

Arizona State is overseeded at #5, IMO; Florida State and Arkansas are better, I think, and one could make a good argument for San Diego as well. It was kind of a down year for the Pac 10.

UIC stuns Long Beach 4-1, behind 8 innings of one-hit ball by Ryan Zink.
   106. MM1f Posted: June 02, 2007 at 03:18 AM (#2388744)
Wow, what a game for UIC. Theyve been building a real solid program for awhile, producing Curtis Granderson, Dave Haehnel (O's prospect) and Mark Hallberg (hardest man to K in NCAA last year..transferred to FSU though, now starting at SS for them).
In addition to mining Chicago and its suburbs for talent they take advantage of the lack of real NCAA baseball in Wisconsin to nag some good HS players (incl Zink and Hallberg) - plus they seem to recruit the fertile Washington CCs as much as the solid Illinois ones. Go figure

Whats great for them is that, though Ryan Zink has been their ace since his freshman year, hes only their 3rd best starter this year while recovering from 06 arm surgery so they've still got plenty of good pitching for the weekend. Closer David Cales struck out the side after Zink to rack up his 13th save and run his K/BB to 32 and ONE in 33 innings. 20 hits, one homer and an 0.82 ERA to go with that. He also plays 2b (268/311/458) and shows some pop.
He transferred from Missouri where he was one of their best pitchers as a freshman (41 IP, 25 H, 14 BB, 1 HR, 49 Ks, 2.83 ERA) but went 5-30 at the plate. Coaches tell him they want him to only pitch, he says no and transfers back home to UIC, where they promise him he can do both. IIRC he wasnt hitting at all to start the year so credit the UIC coaching staff for sticking with him as a 2-way guy.

Oh and Larry Gempp is small and no prospect but his OPS' at UIC have gone 1020, 963 to 1066. Good little hitter.

This teams got some talent and would be an awesome Cinderella.

Fresno State knocks off San Diego, as well.

Outstanding first day of the tournament, IMO. A number of the top seeds learned that you can't take anyone for granted any more.

Drew Saberhagen, son of the former KC pitcher, is starting for WCU today in their elimination game against Jacksonville. Saberhagen transferred from Pepperdine after appearing sparingly as a freshman there; he was 8-1 with a 3.10 ERA in 15 starts for the Catamounts this year, including a 3-1 win at Georgia and a 6-3 win over Clemson. Drew's a lefty, unlike Dad, and more of a finesse guy.

Wake Forst gives the ball to Ben Hunter (I thought Kledzik might start), facing Brown's James Cramphin.

WCU gets on the board in the top of the 1st, as does Rutgers against Lafayette. Stetson gets a runner to second in the top half against Bethune-Cookman, but strands him.

LeMoyne tied 5-5 with Ohio St in the 6th. like all of the early games today, the loser goes home.

Rutgers outlasted Lafayette 11-10 in back and forth slugfest in the Charlottesville elimination game. The scoring went... Rutgers up 2-1, Lafayette up 4-2, Rutgers 6-4, Lafayette 7-6, Rutgers 11-6 in the top of the 8th. Lafayette got one in the 8th and then a 2 run homer in the bottom of the 9th cut it to 11-10. After the homer Rutgers brought in senior Kevin Lillis to replace his freshman brother Chris Lillis on the mound to get the final 3 outs to hold on.

Miami is blasting Kent State 8-1 in the 8th.
LeMoyne is hanging tough with Ohio State, 5-5 in the bottom of the 7th. The Buckeyes have a runner on 3rd with no outs.
Wichita State is now up 3-2 on ORU. Wouldn't that be a kick in the teeth for the Shockers, two and out at home?
Baylor jumps out on Prairie View early, 5-0 in the 3rd.
Memphis gets back to within 6-3 on Austin Peay.

Rutgers knocks out Lafayette in a wild one, 11-10. The Leopards led 4-3 after six, then Rutgers scored three in the top of the 7th, Lafayette got three in their half, and the Scarlet Knights countered with a five-spot in the eighth (including 2-run shots by Frank Meade and Ryan Hill) to go up 11-7. Lafayette got one in the eighth on a solo shot by Dave Vrechsel, and Kevin Leasure's 2-run HR (giving him 5 RBI for the game) got the Leopards to within one to start the ninth, but Chris Lillis came on in relief of baby brother Kevin to close it out.

Wake Forest sends Brown packing, 4-2.

Kent State has closed the gap against the Hurricanes to 8-3. Freshman Alex Koronis has just relieved Garcia for Miami.

Does only one team from each regional advance? If a team goes 2-0 today will they still have to play again tomorrow against the team they beat today and winner of the loser bracket?

Only one team from each regional advances -- to meet another regional for the right to advance to the CWS. A team that gets to 2-0 has to then be beaten twice by the winner of the loser's bracket to be eliminated. So if you get to 2-0, you only have to win one more. The loser's bracket winner has to win twice.

Missouri is still batting in an increasingly ugly 6th. After the second homer, Marks was taken out for Colby Wark, who immediately walked two and hit a batter. He was then replaced, and the Tigers got their fourth run on a FC grounder. 4-3 Missouri, one out, runners on first and third.

What a day, I wish I could have gotten all these games on TV.
Minnesota hangs on to eliminate host San Diego 6-5.
Illinois-Chicago making another step in a Cinderella run by beating UCLA 3-1. Both starters (Gavin Brooks for UCLA, Zach Peterson for UIC threw CGs)
Nebraska rallies from a 4-1 hole to beat Monmouth 6-5.
Michigan just went up 3-1 on Vandy in the 7th.
Oklahoma State clubs Arkansas 14-3
Virginia gets 3 in the 13th to break a tie with Oregon State and win 7-4, what a game that must have been.
Long Beach State gets three in the bottom of the 8th to break another tie and send Pepperdine home 6-3.

Sam Houston State trailed Southern Mississippi 7-1, but scored 4 in the bottom of the 7th and then 2 more in the bottom of the 8th to tie the game. Southern Miss then scored two runs in the top of the 9th, but Sam Houston scored two in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game again. Southern Miss scored a run in the 10th to retake the lead, but Sam Houston scored a run in the bottom of the 10th to tie the game yet again (at 10). Then in the 11th, Southern Miss scored a run in the top half of the inning, only to see Sam Houston score twice in the bottom half of the inning to win the game, 12-11.

Sam Houston State's tying runs in the 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th (and the winning run in the 11th) all scored with two outs...

#1 seeds Florida State, Texas, Texas A&M;, Wichita State, Vanderbilt, and Arkansas all win elimination games, giving themselves a chance to come back and take their regionals at home.

Clemson is about to knock top seed Coastal Carolina into the losers' bracket, leading 11-6 in the 9th. Closer Alan Farina is on for the Tigers.

Charlotte trailed 12-5 going to the bottom of the 9th against top seed South Carolina, but is making it mildly interesting; it's now 12-8 with two on and two out.

...and as soon as I post, the Gamecocks finally manage to record the third out.

Texas jumps on top of UC-Irvine 1-0 at Round Rock, with thundershowers in the area. The game is in the third.

Sam Houston got three in the top of the first against Ole Miss, but the Rebels exploded for six in their half (after the first two batters had been retired, to boot), and added one in the second.

I sure hope Arkansas doesn't. That regional winner faces the Columbia winner -- and if it's Arkansas they'll host the super regional. If, OTOH, Oklahoma St. wins as a # 3 seed, it could be up for grabs between them and Louisville (also a # 3 seed). Of course, Louisville has two games to win first for it to matter.

Fresno State jumps on Minnesota for six in the first. The winner gets Cal State-Fullerton later.

Coastal Carolina isn't done yet. A two-run HR from Matt Rademacher has the Chanticleers within three.

I can almost guarantee that if that happens, the Cardinals will have to go to Stillwater.

Yeah, I know. But you know what? It's 100% if Arkansas wins. ;-)

Missouri out in the first, no score.

Coastal can't complete the job, and now has to win three in a row, beginning at 8 PM ET against St. John's.

Aaron Senne solo HR for Missouri in the 2nd. 1-0 Missouri after two.

By the way, Miami's loss today ended an amazing streak of 13 consecutive regional wins. They had won their regional every single year during Jim Morris's tenure as head coach, on their way to 10 appearances in the CWS.

Quite a disappointing team, having been ranked in the top five of every national poll to start the season . . . .

Louisville ties Missouri at 1-1, on an RBI single by Logan Johnson. Going to the bottom of the 3rd.

35 runs scored in the first 5 games at Long Beach, 3.5 per team per game. Blair Field the pitchers park reasserts itself.

Long Beach State vs. UCLA, starting in about half an hour. The Dirtbags are coming out of the losers bracket and have to win two.

Huge opportunity for the Cards goes to waste. Bases loaded, one out . . . SS Chris Cates hits into a DP. Cates is the shortest player in D-I baseball (5'3"), FYI.

Missouri takes the lead in the bottom of the 4th, but it could have been MUCH worse. They loaded the bases on two walks and a HBP, but got only one run out of it when reliever Gavin Logsdon induced a DP grounder and a fly ball out. 2-1 Tigers going to the 5th.

Louisville ties Missouri at 2-2 in the 6th, on an unearned run. Now in the bottom of the 6th.

What a game in Columbia. In both the 5th and 7th, Louisville had a runner on third with less than two outs, and failed to get him home. Just now, Missouri, had runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out, after Isaiah Howes just lost a fly ball to left field for a gift double. They, too, failed to capitalize; Kyle Hollander came into pitch, and got a critical K and a grounder to keep it tied, 2-2 going to the 8th.

Chris Dominguez two-run HR in the top of the 8th!! 4-2 Louisville!

Things are getting heated afterwards after Dominguez had some things to say to Missouri players and fans . . . .

Long Beach State scored 3 runs in the bottom of the first, up 3-0 in the 3rd.

Ugh. A dropped outfield fly with a runner on third, followed by a safe bunt. Middle of the 3rd and it's not 3-2, LBSU over UCLA. (I'm listening to webcast.)

Mississippi becomes the first team to win its regional, outslugging a game Sam Houston State team 21-13.

Rice has just won its regional as well, defeating TCU 3-1.

Missouri down 1-2-3 in the 8th. Included in that was a pop-up to Dominguez; the fans booed lustily. Great stuff. Cards now three outs away from forcing a rematch tomorrow at 1:00 (central time) for the regional title).
   195. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 03, 2007 at 10:14 PM (#2391164)
Going to the bottom on the ninth now in Columbia, MO. Good news for Sam M is that Priday is leading off, so he can't tie it with one swing.

And Priday hit the home run that can't tie it. Yowsa, Mike. Crystal ball much?

4-2 after three innings (an unearned run returned. Left the bases loaded.

Missouri has the tying run in scoring position with one out.

Mach strikes out swinging -- two down in the 9th. Louisville had earlier walked Senne intentionally, even though he represented the winning run for Missouri. Quite a gamble. So far, it's paid off. So far . . . .

Arndt flies out to CF -- Louisville wins, they play again tomorrow!!!!! 4-3 Cards!!!!
