Strikethrough doesn't work in the title. I wanted to do this:

with God Wieters notes

Would you believe it, Wieters is just a man.

thanks Mike. hopefully it won't be too long before we see this battery at Camden.

Between this game and spring training, Bergesen has 17 Ks in 16.2 IP. It's a tiny sample size, but nonetheless an encouraging sign.

So 0 for 3 with a walk?

What is wrong with Wieters? He must be hurt.

Other notable performances:

* Pedro Alvarez went 3-5 with a HR, a double, and several RBI

* Brett Wallace had a huge night, 4-5 with 2 HRs and 6 RBI (does he have a shot at StL this year?)

* Matt LaPorta started off strong, 3-5 with 2 2B and a HR.

* Brian Matusz had an encouraging first minor league start - 4.2 IP, 2 ER on 5 H, 4 K in Frederick

* Tommy Hanson continued to dominate: 4.1 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 10 K. He's too good for the minors.

* Homer Bailey got ROCKED - 5.1 IP, 9 R, 8 ER, 3 HR allowed

* Jeremy Hellickson had an encouraging AA start: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3/1 K/BB
   7. Yeaarrgghhhh Posted: April 10, 2009 at 06:59 PM (#3133488)
The Orioles apparently have told Matusz to work almost exclusively off his FB and CU, so it's hard to evaluate his stats (similar to Porcello last year).

you think they'll get the game in mike?

Fernando Martinez was 2-4 with a double and a triple as the DH. He might start playing in the field next weekend.

Thanks for the report, Mike. Do you have any summary thoughts on Bergesen's upside and how close to the majors he looks?

No. Although if I had posted this BEFORE I went to Durham rather than after, it might have looked better :)

I like to see a pitcher more than once before I do this, and I especially dislike giving opinions based on an early-season start, so take this with a grain of salt. I think the Orioles would probably be well served to avoid pushing Bergesen; a full year at AAA won't hurt and might help. I saw some things I liked (lots of grounders, few well-hit) and some things I didn't (a lot of first-pitch balls). I don't think he's got a reliable out pitch. I can't think of a good comp for him off the top of my head.

Heh, sorry guy. I was gonna snag tickets, but guessed it wouldn't be played anyway.
Nice pro debut for D.J. Mitchell (Charleston) tonight - 6 1 1 0 0 6, 9 gb.
   14. Mike Emeigh Posted: April 11, 2009 at 12:09 AM (#3133885)
FWIW, Liz looked a LOT better coming out of the bullpen than I've ever seen from him (this is about the third or fourth time I've seen him pitch). His future might very well be in late-inning relief.

Thanks, Mike. I agree on Liz, and I have similar suspicions about Bergesen (although I haven't seen him pitch).

The only low-K groundballer comp I can think of is Carlos Silva which would actually be a very good result out of a guy the O's aren't expecting to sniff the front of their rotation.

Too bad about the rainout tonight.

From the kinda weird but not mega interesting (yet I'm sharing it) file, this guy is the Braves AA co-closer at the moment. More pertinent stats can be found here, but - really - I've got no idea what this guy's story is.

Minor league gameday has been garbage at the AA level tonight.

Considering Glaus is not healing quickly, and Freese/Thurston/Barden probably won't hit much, he may have a good shot if he keeps this up.
   18. CWS Keith plans to boo your show at the Apollo Posted: April 11, 2009 at 03:00 AM (#3134118)
Gordon Beckham continues to rake -- he's 6-for-10 in his first two games for Birmingham. The Barons are pretty loaded (relatively speaking) -- the Sox' top five prospects are there (the aforementioned SS Beckham, 1B Brandon Allen, C Tyler Flowers, 3B Dayan Viciedo and LHP Aaron Poreda) as well as a couple of other top ten (or 15) guys (CF John Shelby and RHP Lucas Harrell).

Thanks, especially since I can't go again until next Thursday night when Gwinnett is in town.

I'm a little surprised that Poreda is back in Birmingham; he did very well there over the second half and I thought he'd go up a level.

The reason that's been cited is they want Poreda to work with pitching coach J.R. Perdew.

hi mike!!!

thx for the report. i would guess it explains why even college supadupa stahs need to face even AAA guys before ML pitchers.

please tell me what you think of mitch talbot (ex-Astro) - i was not real too happy when they traded him for the ineffective aubrey huff

- and for some twisted reason (probably me being female and 5'2") i am a little more than amused that a man can be too large and strong to play a certain baseball position

this is college ball and totally self-indulgent, but...
i would like to see georgia tech's freshman closer, mark pope, launched into space. He just blew a 5 run lead in the 9th against UVa (final: Cavs 11, GT 10), brings his numbers for the year to 19 runs allowed (16 earned) in 13.1 innings.

Wieters finally got his first AAA hit in tonight's game, a single in the sixth inning. In yesterday's 8-4 loss to Durham, Wieters walked, struck out twice, reached on an error, and flied out. In 12 PAs at AAA so far, he has two walks, a aingle, and five Ks.

David Hernandez had 9 Ks through 4 2/3 tonight, but was lifted after throwing 76 pitches. He also allowed a home run to Ray Olmedo, of all people - Olmedo's second in as many games. Wade Davis threw 78 pitches in four innings.

But "http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?n=Reid" doesn't link to either a player profile, or a pic.

weird game b/w mobile and huntsville. the bay bears were picked off as many times as they had hits (4, with gerardo parra the victim on 3 occasions) but still won 3-0 as huntsville was one-hit.

did you go kyle? not many people ever see a tie (4-4 after 9, travel curfew in effect).

It's gonna be a long year in Charlotte until they start moving up guys like Poreda and Beckham.

I was at the Gwinnett-Charlotte game on Saturday (you know, the one that got called early due to rain, only they didn't bother to let people know that was the case), and Charlotte looks rough. Any team that has Brian Myrow and Ben Broussard hitting three and four is in trouble. Jo Jo Reyes still doesn't look big league ready, and that should concern people.
   31. Kyle S at work Posted: April 13, 2009 at 04:30 PM (#3136182)
Did not go - my daughter got sick and we had to stay home with her. Bummed about missing it.

Assuming everyone is okay, we will be on the outfield grass in Gwinnett this Friday night to witness the Wieters Effect firsthand. Those ticketbastard fees are outrageous - something like 50% of the quoted ticket price.
   32. Mark S. Posted: April 13, 2009 at 07:25 PM (#3136449)
Fernando Martinez isn't playing the field yet, and he isn't hitting singles either. He's 5-20 with 3 doubles, 1 triple and a home run. He also has 3 walks, but all of them were in the 15 inning game Sunday.
   33. Der Komminsk-sar Posted: April 13, 2009 at 07:51 PM (#3136476)

Whaaa? I was complaining about Durham's $1.50 per (note: I'm cheap).

There's nothing wrong with a AAA club batting Brian Myrow third (though 2nd is a better fit - presuming they're trying to maximize wins, a questionable assumption). He's a professional hitter.
   34. I Left Tim Raines Down In Africa Posted: April 13, 2009 at 08:24 PM (#3136526)
Maybe Myrow will grow on me, I don't know.

He had his bat wrapped up behind his lead ear and his front leg cocked in some goofy-looking Karate Kid-esque way, and was late and under everything the other night. I don't know when that changed for him, but if he doesn't quicken and level his bat, that's not going to end well.
