UPDATED Organizational Reports: NL East

Atlanta

The Braves’ top prospects, for the most part, are doing very well. There are also a few potential candidates for breakouts in the lower minors who are also off to strong starts. Atlanta has a nice mix of prospects at all levels of the minors, although Myrtle Beach’s initial roster has been hit fairly hard by injury.

AAA Richmond (IL)

Record: 16-5, 1st in IL South.

Roster moves: P Jeff Bennett (from Mississippi), P Macay McBride (from extended spring), INF Jonathan Schuerholz (from Mississippi), P Joe Winkelsas (from Mississippi), P Steve Colyer (to Braves), UTIL Willie Harris (to Braves), P Peter Moylan (to Braves), P Rich Scalamandre (to DL)

Moving up the charts: OF Gregor Blanco (.338/.427/.415), SP Anthony Lerew (1.83 ERA in four starts, 8 BB in 19 1/3 IP), RP Manny Acosta (17 K, 1 ER allowed in 13 2/2 IP).

Struggling: OF TJ Bohn (.222/.310/.302, 18 K in ~75 PA)

Comments:
The relationship between Richmond and the Braves has been a bit testy over the past few years, and perhaps in response Atlanta sent a mostly veteran bunch to The Diamond this year. So far, that’s paid off in a winning team (something that hasn’t been seen in Richmond for a while), albeit one that isn’t particularly interesting as far as prospects go. I’m not a big Gregor Blanco advocate; he is a prototypical “slappin’ swifty” type who will probably struggle once pitchers figure out that he can’t really hurt them too much as long as they throw him strikes. Lerew’s control problems aren’t entirely a thing of the past, but his last start (7 IP, 4 H, no BB) against Norfolk was encouraging.

AA Mississippi (SL)

Record: 18-7, 1st in SL South.

Roster moves: P Francisley Bueno (from extended spring), INF Diory Hernandez (from Myrtle Beach), P Brad Nelson (from Myrtle Beach), P Michael Nix (from Myrtle Beach), INF Mike Rozema (from Myrtle Beach), INF JC Holt (to DL), P Lee Hyde (to extended spring, injured)

Moving up the charts: Hernandez (.400/.474/.620), C Jarrod Saltalamacchia (.312/.404/.623, 6 HR in 21 games), OF Brandon Jones (.301/.347/.559), SP Jo-Jo Reyes (3.04 ERA, 24 K in 26 2/3 IP), RP Joey Devine (16/5 K/BB in 13 IP).

Struggling: 3B Van Pope (.176/.222/.308), SS Brent Lillibridge (31 K in ~100 PA), OF Josh Burrus (.122/.204/.245).

Comments:
This team has an interesting mix of prospects. There was some discussion of promoting Jones to Atlanta after Langerhans was traded, although I suspect his current 5/33 slide (with 10 Ks) may have cooled that thought for the moment. Hernandez has never hit anything remotely like this in his minor league career so far; he might be this year’s version of Martin Prado, who parlayed a hot start at Mississippi into a major league job a year ago. I was surprised that Reyes bypassed Myrtle Beach, where he didn’t pitch especially well a year ago after a mid-season promotion from Rome, but so far he’s had four pretty good efforts in five starts (although he’s had some issues with command).

Advanced A Myrtle Beach (CarL)

Record: 12-13, 3rd in CarL Southern Division.

Roster moves: P Jorge Acosta (from Rome), OF Roberto Alvarez (from extended spring), INF Paul Bennett (from extended spring), P Jang Ji Cho (from extended spring), INF Robert Marcial (from extended spring), P Sergio Valenzuela (from Rome), P Jonathan Venters (from extended spring), INF Eric Campbell (to extended spring, injured), P Jose Santiago (to extended spring, injured), OF Matt Young (to extended spring, injured).

Moving up the charts: no one of note

Struggling: SS Elvis Andrus (.250/.305/.375, 25 K in ~95 PA), 1B Kala Kaaihue (.167/.277/.352, 21 K in ~65 PA).

Comments:
Andrus and Campbell (and I guess Kaaihue) were the only remotely interesting prospects on this team when the season started, and none have flourished, although Myrtle Beach isn’t exactly the easiest place in the world to hit. Campbell was back at 3B before he went down, so it looks like the 2B experiment is over for the time being.

Low A Rome (SAL)

Record: 7-19, 7th in SAL Southern Division.

Roster moves: P Michael Broadway (from extended spring), P Jaye Chapman (from extended spring), OF Ernesto Mejia (from extended spring), INF Brandon Monk (from extended spring), P Chad Paronto (on ML rehab from Braves), INF Cole Miles (to extended spring)

Moving up the charts: OF Jordan Schaefer (.354/.421/.602, 14 doubles in 26 games), SP Tommy Hanson (2.25 ERA, 40/7 K/BB in 24 IP)

Struggling: OF Concepcion Rodriguez (.200/.289/.275), OF Jon-Mark Owings (.203/.241/.418, 24/3 K/BB).

Comments:
Hanson, a 22nd rounder in 2005 who signed as a DFE prior to the 2006 season, pitched well at Danville a year ago (56/9 K/BB in 51 2/3 IP) and is continuing the trend at Rome. The Braves don’t have a history of moving pitching prospects quickly, and I expect Hanson (who doesn’t turn 21 until August) to spend most if not all of the season in low A, even though he’s pretty polished and might need to be challenged by better hitters in order to develop. Chase Fontaine, Atlanta’s #2 pick a year ago, is struggling a bit as well (.250/.337/.304, 29 Ks in ~110 PA), although his bat has picked up a bit of late (7/18 in his last five games). Jeff Lyman got off to a slow start, but in his last two outings has thrown 11 innings without allowing an earned run, giving up just five hits in that stretch while fanning 9.

Florida

The Marlins have been pitching-heavy for the last few years, and that trend does not appear to be changing at all, with no real hitting prospects above A-ball and only a couple at the lower levels. No prospect is performing significantly better than advertised, and with the exception of the injured Brett SInkbeil, no prospect is really performing significantly worse than expected. Because Florida has moved almost all of its top-level kids to the big club, there’s little reason for excitement at either Albuquerque or Zebulon.

AAA Albuquerque (PCL)

Record: 13-12, 2nd in PCL American South division.

Roster moves: P Justin Miller (signed as free agent), OF Val Pascucci (signed as free agent), INF John Raburn (from Carolina), P Christopher Young (from Carolina), P Matt Yourkin (from Carolina), P Nate Field (to Marlins), P Wes Obermueller (to Marlins), OF Eric Reed (to Marlins), P Eddy Rodriguez (to DL), INF Zach Sorensen (retired)

Moving up the charts: OF Chad Hermansen (.367/.440/.532)

Struggling: SS Robert Andino (.224/.245/.299)

Comments:
Hermansen’s no prospect at this stage, of course, just a potentially interesting reclamation project who could get a tryout in CF for the big club at some point - it’s mildly encouraging that he’s fanned only 15 times so far, but it appears to be at the expense of his power stroke. Andino is rapidly playing himself out of whatever prospect status he might have achieved in the past.

AA Carolina (SL)

Record: 10-15, tied for 4th in SL North.

Roster moves: OF Dante Brinkley (from Jupiter), INF Chase Lambin (signed as free agent), P Wes Letson (from Jupiter), P Blake McGinley (signed as free agent), P Jarrett Santos (from Jupiter), P Jesus Silva (from Jupiter/to Jupiter), P Jamie Brauer (to Jupiter/from Jupiter), OF Jose Campusano (to DL), P Jesus Delgado (to DL), P Scott Tyler (to Marlins/from Marlins), P Rick Vanden Hurk (to Marlins/from Marlins)

Moving up the charts: Brinkley (.410/.4651/.667 with the Mudcats after a .349/.451/.744 start with the Hammerheads), OF Brett Carroll (.273/.387/.545 after a slow start, 12 doubles in 24 games).

Struggling: no one of note

Comments:
P Gaby Hernandez, the best prospect here, has not had a really bad start so far, but hasn’t been lights out in any of them, either. Vanden Hurk was called up to the Marlins long before he was really ready (shades of Logan Kensing), was hammered there, but acquitted himself well when he finally made his AA debut. Like the last couple of years, this team is long on pitching and very short on hitting. Brinkley, who like a number of other Florida prospects got to this organization via the Mets, is old for the level (as he’s been throughout his minor league career) and has nothing like this power show in his career so far; the only thing that he is doing that he’s done consistently through his career is to strike out too much. Carroll is an excellent defensive OF, either in CF or RF, and if his power stroke continues to develop he could figure into the CF mix in Miami before the year is over. The Mudcats could really use at least one reliever who can throw strikes; neither Tyler nor Scott Nestor appears to be making any progress in that regard.

Advanced A Jupiter (FSL)

Record: 11-14, tied for 4th in FSL East.

Roster moves: C Trent D’Antonio (from extended spring), P Trevor Hutchinson (from extended spring), P Jorge Julio (on minor league rehab from Marlins), P Sergio Mitre (on minor league rehab from Marlins), P Ricky Nolasco (on minor league rehab from Marlins), OF Colin Roberson (from Greensboro), P Brett Sinkbeil (to DL), P Taylor Tankersley (to Marlins after minor league rehab)

Moving up the charts: C Brett Hayes (.375/.426/.438), SP Hutchinson (pitching and apparently healthy: 2.84 ERA in 19 IP)

Struggling: SP Sinkbeil (4.76 ERA in two starts before hitting the DL). OF Kris Harvey (.220/.270/.322), 1B Gaby Sanchez (.253/.290/.345)

Comments:
I have no details on what forced Sinkbeil to the DL. The other young guns at Jupiter - Chris Volstad, Ryan Tucker, Aaron Thompson - are having varying degrees of success. Volstad’s strikeout rate has pciked up from a year ago, but Tucker and Thompson are both down significantly. None of the hitters, except for Hayes, are doing much - but then none of the hitters, except for Sanchez, were held in much regard anyway coming into the season.

Low A Greensboro (SAL)

Record: 15-10, 2nd in SAL Northern Division

Roster moves: P Tom Cowley (signed as free agent), P Jason Iehl (from extended spring), INF Dustin Kaats (from extended spring), OF Hunter Mense (from extended spring/to extended spring), P Kyle Winters (from extended spring), INF Jacob Blackwood (to DL/shoulder), P Jay Buente (to extended spring), P Michael Hyle (to DL/viral infection), P Cristhian Martinez (to DL/arm)

Moving up the charts: C Chris Hatcher (.319/.390/.580), OF John Raynor (.370/.489/.562)

Struggling: 1B Logan Morrison (.200/.326/.387), RP Chris Leroux (15 K but 18 hits allowed in 13 2/3 IP)

Comments:
First Horizon Park is a hitters’ park (there were six HRs hit there at the game I attended), and much of Raynor’s damage has come there, plus he’s old for the league, so don’t read too much into his performance so far. Hatcher, on the other hand, has hit well on the road as well as at home, and seems to be bouncing back from an extremely disappointing 2006. On the flip side, Morrison doesn’t turn 20 until August, so his struggles aren’t necessarily an issue yet, either.

New York Mets

As has been noted in a couple of places, the Mets were very aggressive with their top prospects this year, placing Carlos Gomez at AAA, Fernando Martinez at AA, and just-turned-18-YO pitcher Delois Guerra at St. Lucie. The early returns are mixed.

AAA New Orleans (PCL)

Record: 15-11, 1st in PCL American South

Roster moves: INF Wilson Batista (signed as free agent/from St. Lucie), P Eddie Camacho (from St. Lucie), C Robinson Cancel (signed as free agent/from Binghamton), OF Lastings Milledge (from Mets/to DL), INF Ruben Gotay (to Mets), OF Ben Johnson (to DL), P Chan Ho Park (to Mets)

Moving up the charts: Gomez (.299/.387/.412), SP Jorge Sosa (1.13 ERA, 29/4 K/BB in 32 IP).

Struggling: SP Adam Bostick (7.43 ERA, 17/11 K/BB in 23 IP)

Comments:
Phil Humber has had three good starts, two not-so-good efforts; overall, it adds up to a 4.15 ERA and 20 Ks in 26 IP. Milledge was hitting well, but without much power (just 1 double and 1 HR among his 13 hits), before hitting the DL.

AA Binghamton (EL)

Record: 5-13, 6th in EL Northern Division. The weather has played havoc with the Eastern League schedule; the BMets have already lost eight scheduled games to weather, including entire series with Akron and New Britain.

Roster moves: None. Cancel was active for a couple of games before moving up, but the BMets simply made a paper move to deactivate a player; other than that, the roster has not changed since opening day.

Moving up the charts: INF Mark Kiger (.291/.418/.400)

Struggling: Martinez (.229/.299/.314), 1B Mike Carp (.243/.325/.386), SP Kevin Mulvey (4.84 ERA)

Comments:
It’s hard for anyone to get in gear when you are sitting around waiting for the snow to stop so that you can play. That said, the good news for Martinez is that he’s not striking out excessively and he’s maintaining his patience at the plate; the bad news is that he’s not driving the ball at all. Kiger gets a mention here, even though he’s not really a prospect, because he’s the guy who made his major league debut a year ago for Oakland in the postseason, and because he’s got a decent enough set of skills to be able to contribute off the bench in the majors (although he doesn’t really have the arm or range for SS).

Advanced A St. Lucie (FSL)

Record: 11-14, tied for 4th in FSL East.

Roster moves: OF Corey Coles (from extended spring), OF Jamar Hill (from extended spring), P Joe Serfass (from extended spring), P Jeramy Simmons (from extended spring), OF Bobby Malek (released), P Ryan Meyers (to Savannah), P Mike Pelfrey (to Mets after minor league rehab), P Jake Ruckle (to DL)

Moving up the charts: 1B Nick Evans (.292/.377/.492), SP Bobby Parnell (1.88 ERA, 31/9 K/BB in 24 IP), SP Jon Niese (20-YO LHP, 2.35 ERA)

Struggling: OF Dustin Martin (.239/.290/.380), SP Eric Brown (6.55 ERA)

Comments:
Guerra has more or less held his own in five starts, posting a 3.33 ERA although he isn’t missing a lot of bats. The Mets are monitoring his progress carefully, as they are with Niese, who has been excellent in four of five starts. New York has apparently given up on Evans as a 3B prospect (you think that might have something to do with a guy named Wright?), and they’re trying him at the other corner. Martin and Brown had good seasons at Brooklyn a year ago (although Brown struggled when he was promoted to low A), and because both are older prospects (both are 23) the Mets bypassed Savannah and sent both of them to St. Lucie. Neither has adapted to the higher level of competition yet, although Brown’s numbers are inflated because of a 2 2/3 IP/9 ER beating he absorbed at the hands of the Jupiter Hammerheads.

Low A Savannah (SAL)

Record: 5-20, 8th in SAL Southern Division

Roster moves: P Jonathan Castillo (from extended spring), OF Joe Holden (from extended spring), P Todd Privett (to extended spring), P Jorge Reyes (to DL), OF Jonathan Sanchez (to extended spring)

Moving up the charts: SP Tobi Stoner (3.22 ERA, 20/9 K/BB in 22 1/3 IP)

Struggling: SS Juan Lagares (18-YO from DR, .222/.276/.370, 12 errors)

Comments:
Hard to find any silver linings on a 5-20 team, especially one as devoid of prospects as are the Sand Gnats. The Mets have been hyping Lagares as the second coming of Jose Reyes since he was signed at age 16, but he is still very young and very raw bot at bat and in the field. He’s been hitting better recently, posting a 10-game hitting streak.

Philadelphia

This isn’t a particularly deep organization, especially at the top with few prospects likely to contribute soon. The pitching performances are encouraging, the hitting...not so much (although I can probably say that about at least a dozen organizations)

AAA Ottawa (IL)

Record: 10-10, 3rd in IL North

Roster moves: P Rick Bauer (signed as free agent), P Joe Bisenius (from Phillies), P Clay Condrey (from Phillies), C Chris Coste (from DL/rehab with Clearwater), P Zach Segovia (from Phillies), P Matt Smith (from Phillies), INF Joe Thurston (from Reading), INF Brent Abernathy (released), P Eude Brito (to DL), P Fabio Castro (to Phillies), P Jim Crowell (released), P Justin Miller (released), OF Pedro Swann (to Reading)

Moving up the charts: SP J.A. Happ (2.05 ERA, 25 K in 22 IP)

Struggling: SP Segovia (4.67 ERA, 7 BB/6 K in 27 IP), OF Chris Roberson (.211/.295/.263).

Comments:
Jim Rushford is still playing, still hitting (.333/.413/.389), still wondering whether he’ll ever get another cup of java.

AA Reading (EL)

Record: 12-10, 2nd in EL Southern Division

Roster moves: INF Peter Shier (from Clearwater), OF Branden Florence (to DL)

Moving up the charts: no one of note

Struggling: 3B Mike Costanzo (.253/.311/.434, 31 K in ~90 PA)

Comments:
The Phillies jumped SP Matt Maloney, who spent all of 2006 in Lakewood, directly to AA, bypassing Clearwater. The 23-YO lefty has had some issues with location and command; although he’s posted a 3.42 ERA, he’s walked 15 while fanning 19 in 26 1/3 IP so far. Javon Moran, who’s been around a bit, is hitting well (.304/.337/.413) but gives the Phillies nothing that they don’t already have with Michael Bourn.

Advanced A Clearwater (FSL)

Record: 17-8, 1st in FSL West

Roster moves: P Allen Davis (from extended spring), INF Kevin Howard (signed as free agent), C Lou Marson (from extended spring), P Derek Griffith (released), P Freddy Garcia (to Phillies after minor league rehab), P Jon Lieber (to Phillies after minor league rehab), P Charlie Weatherby (to DL)

Moving up the charts: OF Jeremy Slayden (.297/.402/.484), SP Daniel Brauer (2.16 ERA, 22 K in 25 IP), RP Mike Zagurski (22/3 K/BB ratio in 10 1/3 IP).

Struggling: SP Carlos Carrasco (4.00 ERA, 16/10 K/BB in 27 IP)

Comments:
The pitchers are the real strength (and prospects) on this team. Philadelphia jumped Andrew Carpenter, last year’s #2 pick, past Lakewood to Clearwater, and so far the move is paying dividends, as Carpenter has posted a 2.45 ERA in four starts and a relief outing. Carrasco and Josh Outman have gotten off slowly, but Brauer and Patrick Overholt have picked up some of the slack. Greg Golson is still around, still whiffing at a prodigious rate (38 Ks in ~110 PAs), although his other numbers aren’t bad.

Low A Lakewood (SAL)

Record: 11-11, 4th in SAL Northern Division

Roster moves: None of note

Moving up the charts: RP Ben Pfinsgraff (24/4 K/BB in 20 IP)

Struggling: no one of note

Comments:
There are good things and bad things to say about all of the prospects who are playing here. Kyle Drabek has got decent enough peripherals - 23/7 K/BB ratio, 23 hits allowed in 23 innings - but he’s allowed 5 home runs and has a 4.70 ERA. CJ Henry is hitting just .231, has fanned 23 times in ~70 PA, and has drawn just 5 walks, but 10 of his 15 hits have gone for extra bases, and he’s slugging .508. 19-YO SS Adrian Cardenas, last year’s supplemental 1st rounder, is hitting decently enough (.261) and is making fairly consistent contact, but has a .287 OBP and .375 SLG.

Washington

There’s really not much in this organization worth discussing until you get down to Hagerstown. Most of the potentially useful guys are major league roster filler at best, and there is almost no one with any sort of potential to be a solid major league regular, let alone a star. The Nationals have a lot of building to do.

AAA Columbus (IL)

Record: 10-14, 4th place in IL West

Roster moves: INF Brent Abernathy (signed as free agent), INF Manny Alexander (signed as free agent), INF Bernie Castro (from restricted list), OF Kory Casto (from Nationals/to Nationals) OF Cristian Guerrero (from Harrisburg), OF Robin Jennings (from Harrisburg), P Arnie Munoz (from DL), P Jason Simontacchi (from DL), P Eddy Valdez (from Harrisburg), OF Brandon Watson (signed as free agent), 1B Larry Broadway (to DL), INF Melvin Dorta (to Harrisburg), INF Alex Gonzalez (released), P Joel Hanrahan (to DL), OF George Lombard (to DL), P Chris Michalak (to DL), OF Michael Restovich (to Nationals), P Saul Rivera (to Nationals), INF Greg Thissen (to extended spring), INF Marcos Yepez (to Potomac)

Moving up the charts: SP Emiliano Fruto (2.53 ERA, 19 K in 21 1/3 IP but also 16 BB), RP Chris Booker (7 saves, 16/3 K/BB in 10 1/3 IP)

Struggling: Broadway (.171/.298/.371 before hitting the DL)

Comments:

Hanrahan, a long-time Dodger farmhand who’s had some injuries that have held him back, was pitching quite well (1.69 ERA, 22/7 K/BB in 21 1/3 IP) before his latest setback. Minor league retreads Booker, Winston Abreu, and Chris Schroder have also thrown good innings out of the pen for the Clippers.

AA Harrisburg (EL)

Record: 5-17, 6th place in EL Southern

Roster moves: P Dan Kolb (from Potomac), INF Brandon Larson (from DL), OF Tony Blanco (to DL)

Moving up the charts: SP Collin Balester (2.30 ERA, 25/9 K/BB in 27 1/3 IP), SP Mike Hinckley (2.45 ERA, 20/9 K/BB in 22 IP), 1B Josh Whitesell (.354/.447/.585)

Struggling: SP Anastacio Martinez (4.50 ERA), RP Brett Campbell (12/7 BB/K in 12 IP)

Comments:
Hinckley’s fully healthy for the first time in three years, and pitching more like the shining young prospect that he used to be back in 2004.

Advanced A Potomac (CarL)

Record: 13-9, 1st in CarL Northern

Roster moves: P Bryan Lambert (from extended spring), P David Trahan (from extended spring), P Gene Yost (from Hagerstown), P Daniel Foli (to DL), C Brian Peacock (to DL), 1B Logan Sorensen (to DL)

Moving up the charts: OF Marvin Lowrance (.288/.427/.606), SP John Lannan (2.56 ERA)

Struggling: SP Shairon Martis (5.89 ERA)

Comments:
Lowrance isn’t old (22), but is repeating the level. SS Ian Desmond, who seems to have been around forever but is still just 21, is off to a .260/.316/.450 start. SP Clint Everts, another guy who seems to have been on radar screens forever but is only 22, has a 2.81 ERA after three starts, but has walked 10 while fanning 8.

Low A Hagerstown (SAL)

Record: 9-16, 7th in SAL Northern Division

Roster moves: P Eduardo Baeza (from extended spring), INF Marcos Cabral (from extended spring), P Cory Van Allen (from extended spring), P Greg Bunn (to DL), P Daniel Pfau (to extended spring)

Moving up the charts: OF Michael Daniel (.298/.394/.564), SP Van Allen (2.45 ERA, 18/0 K/BB in 14 2/3 IP)

Struggling: OF Justin Maxwell (.227/.310/.467)

Comments:
Last year’s #1 pick, Chris Marrero, who at age 18 is one of the younger players in the league, is hitting .296/.322/.420 and has struck out just 18 times in ~85 PA - not a bad first go-round considering the age.

Glad to see you posting, Mike.

A few thoughts:
* I wouldn't say Savannah is *devoid* of prospects - just ones who are ready to contribute. Pena is a prospect, as is Lagares and maybe Veloz.
* What do you think of Lambin? I've thought before that his bat and range are good enough to be a big league utility man, he just needs to cut his errors in half.
* Haven't gotten to see him as a pro yet (hell, I haven't gotten to go to a game all year yet), but I liked Raynor at UNC-W - I thought the Fish should have let him play in Jupiter and get some time in center (he's got the range).
* Why isn't Slayden in AA? He's old for his level, hit quite well in the Sally last year, and his arm seems to be coming back. He's a legit prospect (albeit a lesser one). Gaaaah, the Phils drive me batty sometimes (which, as a Braves fan, suits me fine).
* Saying Lillibridge is struggling is a bit strong - I don't like the K rate (which will always be a problem), but, otherwise, he's doing fine in a tough place to hit.

Braves Thoughts

* Lillibridge is struggling IMO. 3/1 K/BB ratio for a polished college hitter. And he really had one super hot series to push his #s up.
* Lerew has found improved control, but he is striking next to noone out
* Jamie Richmond ( left out ) is having some run issues, but posting very strong peripherals, and he is very young too
* Dan Smith and Matt Harrison are doing very well in AA too, again with strong peripherals. This is the only all lefty rotation I think

Re: Mulvey

He got absolutely destroyed in his first start of the season.

1.1 ip, 7 er, 4 hits, 4 walks, 1 hr, 1 K.

Since then, he has done much better.

21 IP, 18 hit, 15/1 k/bb, 0 hr, 2.14 ERA.

"* Lillibridge is struggling IMO. 3/1 K/BB ratio for a polished college hitter."

Just cos a kid went to college doesnt mean hes polished. He'll take a walk yes but hes always been a swing for the fences and sometimes whiff guy, despite not being a real slugger.
Not entirely unexpected to see AA pitchers exploiting this.

And once a guy is this far into his pro career where he came from hardly matters.

I'm excited about Lagares. Can't expect anyone to be Reyes, but he's supposed to be very raw and toolsy. The 12 errors concern me, but he's starting to hit the SAL pitching, which is remarkable for a 17/18 yo in his first go-round.

Pena looks good for a 17 yo in low A.

Aside from Mulvey, the other kid who's raised eyebrows is Bobby Parnell. He's striking out a good number of hitters and reportedly can throw in the low 90s.

Pellot might be starting to get the hang of low A ball.

E. Garcia hasn't been playing for a while now, wonder what happened to him.

Spent 3 yrs in college, he should be able to handle the AA level right? His strike zone control was excellent last year, so this is not the norm for him.

another Rome tidbit : Beau Jones, he of the myriad control problems, has been used as a reliever this year ( though going 2+ innings most times ) and has put up some sterling #s

Washington

There’s really not much in this organization worth discussing until you get down to Savannah.

Considering that's now a Mets affiliate, things must really look hopeless.

"Kiger gets a mention here, even though he’s not really a prospect, because he’s the guy who made his major league debut a year ago for Oakland in the postseason, and because he’s got a decent enough set of skills to be able to contribute off the bench in the majors (although he doesn’t really have the arm or range for SS)."

Too bad the team doesn't need an extra middle infielder right now.

Well, I'd say Lillibridge is handling (though not dominating by any means - .266/.352/.383 in a tough park) the AA level, just with a lot of Ks (no surprise, he was among the nation's leaders in Ks as a collegian). Yeah, it's a red flag, but it's part of the package with him (along with the plus range, solid walks, good speed, and gap power).

"

Uhhhh, lots of guys who spend 3 years in college can't handle AA. Even ones that were good in college. That still doesnt really tell us much about Lillibridge. And now that we've seen him perform in low and high A over a full year its his performance there that tells us about how he can handle AA, the fact that he went to college tells us hardly anyway.

"His strike zone control was excellent last year, so this is not the norm for him."

In the sense that he walked alot, yes. But as DerK mentioned hes always been a high K guy, and unless his approach changes (note-i havnt seen him play since his team USA stint except for one game on TV his Jr year of college) then he will always be susceptible to contact issues. It is, again..like Der-K said, part of the package. A package that contains some other nifty things (id add versatility to your list, which will really help him initially crack the squad as a util guy..I've seen him play a solid CF before he was drafted)

I talked with Santos a couple weeks ago after he came in to his first game with the Mudcats. Nice fella. That game we definatly saw a really wicked curve that broke real late. It was just hellish. The next night though he was brought in for releif and didn't throw any curve balls. I think he could be a pretty good reliever to keep around.

As for Brett Carroll, on of my favorite players out there, he just has a sick arm out in the field. One guy I would never test because I have seen him throw out runners very easily.

Lee Mitchell is another favorite in the field. Looks like he got a little more weight on him this year.

I could go on and on about each player but ya do a great job on it Mike and I write a gameblog after every home game so I wont keep filling up space.

Where's your blog, ncsu?

Also - while this isn't the place for it - an Triangle meetup is way overdue. I don't even think I've ever met half the guys on this board from the area...

Added recent roster moves. Looks like the Lagares experiment is over for the time being.

Mike Carp broke a finger during a collision in the field while turning a DP.

Also - while this isn't the place for it - an Triangle meetup is way overdue.

Give me some good dates for one and I'll see what's doable.

Triangle: I can't help with dates, just agree to them. I do know that late April is no good for me...

On Gregor Blanco: I think we're missing the boat on this guy (didn't make BA's top 30 list for Atlanta). Yeah, he's fast, hits for average, and hasn't shown a lot of power but... he hits the ball harder than most others of his type (his very low power output last year was part of a conscious effort to be more of a leadoff man) - he's done what he has in tough parks (albeit this hurt his type less as a player than say, a power guy), and has maintained the average while taking a lot of pitches (also contributes to his high K rate). To boot, some consider him to have good to excellent range in center (his stats do not support this assertion) and he's got an average or better arm. I haven't looked at his splits, but he's also got a rep as a very good situational hitter. (This still leaves him as a guy without much power, who struggles with lefties, and needs to finetune his baserunning.)
Would he be thrown more strikes at the big league level? Sure, and he wouldn't hit .346/.465/.457 there (or its MLE Equivalent). But I think he can definitely help a big league team right now.

StrugglingMartinez (.229/.299/.314)

Martinez is now up to .316/.385/.418. 10 BB and 28 K in 98 ABs. Strikeouts are a little high and power is a little low, but he's an 18 year old with a 800 OPS in AA.

Thanks Mike for the info. Saves a lot of time scouring stats. I picked up Jorge Sosa in my league-am happy so far. What do you think of Lerew's chances for success. That walk rate makes me nervous.
