The Cubs were trying for a 2-year deal as they did with Dempster and Williamson, but Miller insisted on just one year and the Cubs believed that he would be back earlier anyway (late May was the original plan, I believe). Another misprognosis and this one is actually costing the Cubs money.
Still, perhaps they hope that Miller will resign for 2007 out of some sense of guilt. Who knows.
Were the Cubs doing the Astros a favor by signing him?
Why? He was most recently with the Red Sox.
What is the rules on that anyway? If nobody would have signed him who would have had to pay for his rehab treatment, and what would they have had to supply Miller with if their is a rule that says they must?
What do you mean "pay for his rehab treatment"? If Miller was unsigned, he'd be paying out of his own pocket, trying to get back into MLB. Sort of like Jose Canseco, only with more of a chance.
Either way it is pretty stupid on the Cubs part to sign him even when he wouldn't agree to a 2 year deal.
