Rehab, rehab, everyone’s on rehab

Mark Mulder pitched six scoreless innings, allowing three hits, in Springfield’s 10-3 win over Tulsa. Mulder is expected to make one more rehab start on Friday, most likely in a rematch against the Drillers in Tulsa. In his first rehab outing, Mulder went five innings for the Cardinals’ FSL affiliate in Palm Beach, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits.

Curtis Granderson will play for West Michigan tonight, following two games with Detroit’s AAA affiliate in Toledo over the weekend in which he was 3-9 with a double. Granderson made one earlier rehab appearance with the Whitecaps, going 2-4 with a triple.

Scott Rolen has begun a rehab assignment with Dunedin, going 0-3 in his first appearance there.

Moises Alou went 3-3 with a double and run scored in his initial rehab assignment for St. Lucie, although he came out after five innings. Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez is supposed to make another rehab start there sometime this week; he hasn’t pitched since his initial start on April 3.

Miguel Montero is expected to rejoin the Diamondbacks this week; he's played 9 games on rehab at Tucson. Chad Tracy is still a couple of weeks away from being activated for a rehab assignment, although he'll probably join the D'backs extended spring program, which is also in Tucson, sometime this week or next.

Brendan Ryan's rehab assignment was moved from Palm Beach to Springfield. He's played in three games for the Cards' AA affiliate, going 6-15 with 3 doubles and a home run.

That can't happen soon enough. Hammock is pretty worthless as a hitter. Word is the Dbacks may send Alex Romero down and keep Hammock as the third catcher/utility guy. That would allow BoMel to use Montero as a pinch hitter too. Regardless of whether Hammock stays for now, he's going back to Tucson once Tracy is ready to come off the DL, as he (along with Romero) has options. Also, Doug Davis is targeting May 9th for his return date but that seems a bit ambitious. Whenever he's back, Petit is heading back to AAA.

Is there any chance Max Scherzer pitches his way into the D-Backs rotation in 2008?

He just needs to keep doing whatever it is he's doing?
But in short, probably not, especially if Doug Davis comes back quickly and is effective.

Max is making his fourth start of the season tomorrow night, btw. If he's downright dominant again, you can bet the Dbacks will start jonesing to bring him up in Edgar's spot

My daughter loves that song. Does that make me a bad father? I blame my wife.♠

Davis is targeting May 9 for his return. I think that's a trifle optimistic.

Duchscherer threw 48 pitching in a 5-2 loss to Las Vegas, allowing five hits and two runs in 2 2/3 innings. Jon Meloan, who has been starting for the 51s, allowed 10 hits but just one run in 5 2/3 innings; he's got a 1.66 ERA so far in four starts.

I assume Montero will become the regular catcher when he returns, given Snyder's struggles?

I wouldn't assume that. Snyder got the job last year in part because Montero was having problems defensively as well as with the bat. I think Melvin likes Snyder's work behind the plate.

Really? His career numbers are .259/.315/.421, and he tore it up in AAA last year to the tune of .325/.427/.451 in 293 PA last year. Even given the level and park index, those are some nice numbers. He might not be a world-beater, but that's a lot better than "worthless," and he plays catcher and all four corner positions. I'd take him on my squad as a reserve in a heartbeat.

that hardly qualifies as "tearing up". those are very pedestrian numbers for the pcl.

he cannot hit major league pitching. simple as that. he's had multiple surgeries that have sapped him of bat speed and power. his career numbers are heavily influenced by his pre-injury performance.

there's no doubt in my mind he's getting sent down when chad tracy is ready to return
