The Week Ahead

Some scattered notes.

Huntsville is in town this week to play the Mudcats, which means I get a chance to get a good look at Alcides Escobar and Mat Gamel (along with a ton of scouts, I would expect, with the trading deadline approaching). The Stars trail Tennessee by one game, and lead Carolina, which has been in .500 mode since the first two weeks of the season, by two. Aaron Thompson is back pitching for Carolina, Gaby Hernandez was sent down from Albuquerque to get straightened out, and Anibal Sanchez made a rehab start in Mississippi earlier this week and will likely make another in this series. Rick VandenHurk has been called up by the Marlins to start tonight, and SS Manuel Mayorson and Cs Alberto Encarnacion and Brett Hayes were sent to Albuquerque. If the rotation holds, David Welch will start for Huntsville Thursday (with the extra off day he could move up a day).

Wade Davis was promoted to AAA by the Rays this week, and made his first AAA start in Syracuse a good one, throwing seven innings of three-hit shutout ball and fanning six. John Jaso was also promoted to Durham from Montgomery, and Reid Brignac was sent back down after going hitless in 10 ABs with 5 Ks in his first big-league exposure.

Some other promotions of note:

Michael Bowden and Jeff Corsaletti have been moved up from Portland to Pawtucket.
Ben Jukich, Carlos Fisher, Shaun Cumberland, and Drew Anderson have been promoted from Chattanooga to Louisville.
James Parr was sent from Mississippi to Richmond.
Javier Castillo was promoted from Birmingham to Charlotte.
Greg Reinhard was moved up from Tennessee to Iowa.
Kody Kirkland was sent from Erie to Toledo.
Kam Mickolio and Felix Romero were moved up from Bowie to Norfolk.
Josh Reddick and Lars Anderson were promoted from Lancaster to Portland.
Tony Sipp, who missed all of 2007 with TJ surgery, is back pitching and has worked his way back to Akron. He got bombed his first time out and pitched two innings on Sunday, allowing two unearned runs.
Drew Stubbs moved up from Sarasota to Chattanooga.

And..the Astros have given up on Brian Bogusevic as a pitcher; he’s now playing the outfield for Corpus Christi.

I see Jamie D'Antona made his major league debut last night with a pinch-hit single. He's filling Upton's roster spot.

Ok, technically he's filling Bonifacio's roster spot, since Clark filled Upton's. Transaction logs at MLB.com were a bit confusing.

The Cubs have promoted pitcher Jordan Latham from Peoria to Daytona.
Colby Rasmus is going to miss a month with a knee injury. So much for trading him.

Mike,

I know you're based out east, but is there any buzz at all around Matt Downs? He just went back to San Jose after a month-ish in Fresno where he wasn't that great in 80 ABs. And he's a bit old for the Cal League. But I wonder if anyone even thinks he can fill in on the infield in the majors someday?

Thanks.

Nope, other than a few Giants fans. He's done nothing but hit in the minors (even his time at Fresno wasn't awful) but he's not a particularly skilled defensive player - he's moved around the diamond a lot, seeing time at both corners as well as second and even sneaking in a few games at SS and in the OF. I don't know where he's going to play; I think if it were me I'd try him at 3B. He also should be at Connecticut, at this point; the infielders there are absolute non-prospects.

Thank you sir.

Escobar left the first game of last night's doubleheader rather abruptly after two innings, leading to speculation that the Brewers had traded Weeks or Hardy and that he was being called up. However, the report was that he jammed a finger while sliding. He didn't play in game 2 but he was in the dugout.

OK, the Huntsville series is over, with Carolina winning 4 of 5.

Escobar is still sidelined; no word that I can find on his return (Huntsville, unfortunately, has one of the generic MiLB.com Web sites which tells you nothing about the team or the players, and the Huntsville Times doesn't have anything online either). Yohannis Perez was promoted from Brevard County to take Michael Garciaparra's (DL) spot, and Jay Gibbons was moved up to Nashville. Donovan Hand was also DL'd by the Stars, with Ben Howard being demoted from the Sounds to take his slot. Michael Brantley is still on the DL, although he's expected to be activated in the next week or so.

The Dodgers released Mark Bellhorn, who had been playing at Jacksonville. The Indians did the same with Jason Tyner, who had been at Buffalo.

Cameron Maybin came off the DL last night. Maybin had been sidelined with a back injury.

Ricky Romero was promoted from New Hampshire to Syracuse. Tyler Greene, another 2005 first-rounder whose career has been disappointing so far, also got a bump to AAA, from Springfield to Memphis, when the Cardinals called up Nick Stavinoha.

Alan Horne came off the DL at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but couldn't find the strike zone and left after walking five in an inning-plus. Phil Humber, back in Rochester's starting rotation, fanned 10 in 7 2/3 innings for the win. Adam Everett is continuing his rehab assignment for the Red Wings after playing for the GCL Twins and for Ft. Myers.

Still junkballing or has he got some of his velocity back?

I saw him pitch twice when Rochester was here, and he was in the low 90s. Of course, that was out of the pen.
