The Diamondbacks are going to be making some moves, although none have been confirmed. As shoewizard/levski reported yesterday, Carlos Gonzalez is going to Tennessee. Yakima's Cyle Hankerd is going somewhere (last night's game story from the Bears noted that he was playing his last game there), and my guess is that it will be to South Bend, with Justin Upton going to Lancaster.

I must admit I don't know anything about Hankerd. It's interesting Upton wasn't moved to high A.

From the article in 3, it appears Jon Zeringue got sent down to Lancaster.

Wow, have to see how C-Gon does in AA. He has some EXTREME home-road splits, so I'm going to be watching carefully - if he does well there, he could be a top 20 guy, if not, barely top 50.

That happened a while ago, Levski.

Hankerd was this year's second choice by the D'backs in the third round, out of USC. He's a line-drive hitter with gap power who tore up the Northwest League (.387/.424/.519 with 16 doubles in 225 PAs). I'm guessing he got jumped over Upton because he is 21 and a college OF. The D'backs tend to be more aggressive with their college hitters than they are with their HS prospects.

Thanks, Mike; I had missed the Zeringue demotion.

There'll be a flurry of moves to cover for players who have left to join the U.S. Olympic qualifying team, including the Cardinals bumping Reid Gorecki from Springfield to Memphis to cover for the departure of Skip Schumaker.
   12. ess eff Posted: August 16, 2006 at 01:51 AM (#2142683)
Cardinals also called up Timo Perez, so maybe Gorecki's promotion is tied to that as well as to Schumaker's departure.

Carlos Pena's contract apparently had an option that allowed him to be released to pursue a major-league deal if the Yankees failed to recall him by August 15.

Carlos was having a pretty decent year, but I don't see why any team would want to pick him up. Who could use him?

Mike - the boldening of new transaction is a great move that is greatly appreciated by this fan. Thanks for all your hard work.

There's quite a few players leaving for team USA, including Michael Bourn from AAA SWB (his last game was yesterday). Here's the full roster...

If Kevin Reynolds gets into a game for Tacoma, he will have played at least one game at five different levels this year; he's already made appearances for Everett, Wisconsin, Inland Empire, and San Antonio.

Ryan Doumit (Pittsburgh) and Lenny DiNardo (Boston) are doing rehab assignments in the GCL (which along with the AZL I don't track). Doumit is expected to continue rehabbing at Indianpolis this weekend.

Reynolds got into the second game of last night's doubleheader.

I'll have to check to see if anyone else has played at five different levels of the minors in one season.

Octavio Dotel has also done it this year - although that's on rehab assignments.

Josh Johnson in the Rays organization is well on his way to doing it. What's really odd is the order in which he has been at various stops: AA, then AAA, then SS, then A+. Basically, they've sent him to whatever level has an injured catcher all season long.

Burlington (low A, KC) placed P Erik Cordier on the DL - he's out for the year.

Mike, have you seen McCutchen play at all? He's having what seems to be a very nice season by all accounts; plus, he's in AA at age 19, so he must be doing something right.
   24. Mike Emeigh Posted: August 17, 2006 at 03:18 PM (#2144875)
Mike, have you seen McCutchen play at all?

I haven't been able to arrange my schedule to see Hickory play, so no.

McCutchen was promoted to AA in part because the Pirates want to see how he handles the jump, in part because of its proximity to Pittsburgh, and in part to keep him in game action for a while longer; Altoona is the only Bucco farm team likely to sniff the postseason. If he handles it well, he'll likely start there in 2007.

Well, Indianapolis is in line to make it, too, but AAA was probably too much of a jump.

Jason Neighborgall update, courtesy of Baseball America's prospect report:

In his last three outings: 0 outs, 8 BB, 6 WP.
For the season: 10 2/3 IP, 9 H, 38 BB, 12 K, 21.09 ERA.

Time to stop the experiment.

Can somebody explain how minor league DL rules work?

How many players are allowed on the rosters at each level?

Can somebody explain how minor league DL rules work?

The minor leagues have one DL, which requires a minimum stay of seven days.

How many players are allowed on the rosters at each level?

At AAA and AA, the teams start the season with 24 active players on the roster, go to 23 in early May, then go back to 24 in early August. At high-A and low-A, teams have 25 active players. In short-season A-ball and rookie ball, teams have 35-man active rosters, of which they can only designate 30 players to play in any one game. Players on rehab assignments (whether from the majors or, in the case of short-season and rookie teams, from a higher minor league level) don't count against the roster limits.

"

For whatever reason hes a personal favorite of mine. This REALLY sucks for him, to miss ANOTHER year when he was a guy with little HS exp who needed all the pro development time he could get

So Emeigh, what do you suggest the Dbacks do with Neighborgall?

They have two choices:

1. Release him.
2. Send him back to the AZL.

I'd probably choose #1; he's showing no signs of progress, and indeed is regressing.

They might save themselves from the inevitable lawsuit that will result when he kills someone...
   36. Der Komminsk-sar Posted: August 21, 2006 at 01:27 PM (#2150278)
I'd choose #2 - it's an essentially no-cost move. Heck, I'd also consider shutting him down to try different arm angles and whatnot - he still has impressive arm strength, if nothing else. But, I wouldn't cut him (or bat against him).
   37. Der Komminsk-sar Posted: August 22, 2006 at 06:10 PM (#2152435)
Oh - since I just remembered: 17 year old Santo Manzanillo is challenging Neighborgall in some respects... 14.2 IP, 14 H, 41 BB, 12 SO, 13.50 ERA over 12 outings.

Wow, Jason's slightly outdated splits for August: 0.7 IP, 16 walks, .500/.900/.750, here's his his gamelog - three straight out-less games in there.

( bonus santolog, unlike Neighborgall, he has yet to have a game this season without a walk - impressive as both are short relievers )
