Terrece Long - seriously?

Is it that bad?

When did Terrence Long get to the Yankees organization? I still have him on the Reds.

Following minor-league transactions is a #####. I admire Mike for trying.

Charlotte (IL, AAA): Received P Boone Logan from Chicago White Sox.

I wish you all the best, Boone. I really do. Hopefully you learned something from your cup of coffee, and you can be an effective big-league pitcher in the long run. But it's clear that you didn't belong on this team.

The only question now is whether Agustin Montero can stick with the big club, or if the Sox will bring up Jeff Nelson.

I'm guessing it's only a matter of time before Nelson is called up.

Inland Empire (Cal, Adv A): Activated P Mark Rowe from the DL.

It's actually Mark LOWE. He pitched yesterday, walked the bases loaded and was pulled.
   9. Mike Emeigh Posted: May 22, 2006 at 02:27 PM (#2032104)
Read Lowe, typed Rowe. Not the first time I've goofed, won't be the last, probably. It's now fixed.

Lowe was on a 20-30 pitch limit yesterday; he's actually a reliever, but was starting to make sure he'd get his work.

I think it was more cautionary than anything. With Tim Battle being demoted to Charleston and Brett Gardner getting called up to Trenton, I wonder how long Tabata will stick in Charleston.

Gardner hasn't been promoted yet, I don't think (unless it happened this afternoon). The Trentonian this morning notes that both his promotion and Sardinha's (from the Thunder to Columbus) were "aborted".

Ahhh, I doubt he has then because I heard this a couple days ago.
   17. Mike Emeigh Posted: May 22, 2006 at 03:25 PM (#2032152)
What happened was this, from the Trenton Times:

After the Yankees purchased the contract of outfielder Mitch Jones Friday, Sardinha was scheduled to take his place at Columbus, with Class-A Tampa outfielder Brett Gardner, who is leading the Florida State League in hitting at .376, penciled in to assume Sardinha's spot at Trenton.

But with Yankees right-hander Kyle Farnsworth experiencing back problems, manager Joe Torre opted for another pitcher on the roster, and the club called up Colter Bean from Columbus. Jones logged one day of major-league service before heading back to Columbus, and Sardinha and Gardner stayed put.

As JRE noted above, minor league movements can be hard to track, even when you think you know where to look.

The Brewers attempted to recall P Chris Mabeus from Nashville to replace Ben Hedrickson. However, they were nailed by an odd rule technicality.

A major leaguer who is optioned to the minors must remain there for 10 days (unless he replaces an injured player on the roster). When the Brewers claimed Mabeus from the A's on waivers, they thought that because Mabeus was not placed on their active roster the rule did not apply - but they were later informed by MLB that Mabeus technically passed through their major league roster when he was claimed, and that therefore the 10-day rule did apply. As a result, the Brewers were forced to call up Carlos Villanueva (tonight's scheduled starter) from Huntsville. Mabeus will pitch for the Stars tonight and will likely join Milwaukee on Friday when his 10 days are up.

Rocco is supposed to remain with the Bulls for three weeks. My guess is that he will start off DH'ing, and then start playing the field as he gets more comfortable. I'll be out at the DBAP tonight; I'll let you know.

I don't know if this counts as "minors" news, but the space for Chris Coste on the Phillies' 25-man was freed up by TBAG (the bad Alex Gonzalez) retiring. Coste will be the backup catcher while Sal Fasano attempts to avoid the DL while recovering from being pegged in the groin.

Chris Coste is a 33 year old minor league veteran who now becomes one of 5 active MLB players from North Dakota. And he is the first MLB player ever to have gone to college in North Dakota!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Concordia College, Div II)

RHP Tony Pena (ARZ) promoted from Double A Tennessee to Triple A Tucson. The pitcher, formerly known as prospect Adriano Rosario, has been good after being converted to a closer. He was 2-0, 6 saves, 0.89 ERA in 20 1/3 innings with Tennessee.

Yes, he was outstanding. His stuff doesn't move a lot, but it has enough late break so that first time around it's tough to hit. I doubt very much that he can be successful as anything other than a short reliever.

Mike:

Have you had a chance to see Angel Salome in person? This kid is a smushed version of Javier Valentin (if that's possible), but unless I am going completely daft I think the Crew has something.

Average up to .318. Tied for the league lead in doubles. Fourth in rbis. Takes a walk now and then. Only 19 and more then holding his own in the South Atlantic League.

I am sure there is a comp staring me in the fact but can't think of one right now. But if you get a chance to see him let me know what you think.

I haven't seen any SAL games yet. The Power will be in Hickory the weekend of June 10, and my wife and stepdaughter will be away for the latter's birthday, so if I'm not doing the Mudcats that weekend I might take a drive out to Hickory. If not, I'll have to wait until August when they come to Greensboro (assuming he's still there).

Mike:

The Brewers take a pretty iterative approach to player development so I would think he will still be in West Virginia barring injury at a higher level or him just taking over the league.

Charlie Fermaint is hitting line drives in Brevard County. He's another one I saw late last year and thought to myself, "hmmmmmmmm". Not much pop right now but has the speed and the arm to go along with a pretty solid approach at the plate.

The crux for him will be Double A. Pitchers will either knock the bat out of his hands or he will have developed sufficient strength to drive the ball. And if so THEN it gets interesting......

Ex-Diamondback 40-man guy Marland Williams, an OF, was signed by the Reds (more connections with ex-Arizona and current Reds DPD Bob Miller) and assigned to High-A Sarasota. Williams was on AAA Tucson this year, but released at the end of April with a .185 average. He'd spent the previous two years in AA. He's likely to be moved up soon, I would assume. He also homered in his first S-Reds game.

Williams has averaged almost fifty steals per professional year at an 87% rate, but hit just .257/.317/.366 for his career.

Well, I called Moran, although other moves haven't taken place because Louisville needs a catcher for a few days. Dane Sardinha was hurt on Tuesday, so the Bats got Hanigan as a fill-in. My guess is that once Sardinha is healthy, Hanigan goes back down and Varner goes up.

The good news on Barton:

He does not need surgery.
There was no cartilage or ligament damage in the elbow joint - the fracture was just above the elbow.

The River Cats will get by with Nate Espy and Scott McClain for the time being, according to the Sacramento Bee. There are no plans to promote Brant Colamarino, who is struggling at Midland (.230/.322/.355, 44 Ks in 152 AB); the A's prefer to have Colamarino playing every day at the lower level.

The Reds have traded right-hander Jon George (16th round, 2002) to Colorado for, as best I can tell.... nothing. George had only pitched ten innings or so for Low-A Dayton this season.

George was indirectly replaced by Robert Manuel, the right-hander acquired in today's Dave Williams giveaway
trade.

And left-hander Jan Granado, who pitched in the Reds org from 2000-2004 since signing out of Venezuela in 2000, pitched last night for High-A Sarasota. Granado had been taken by the Twins in the minor-league Rule 5 draft before the 2005 season, then pitched decently at High-A and poorly at AA for Minnesota last season. I guess Wayne Krivsky really does like him or something.
