2003 Manager of the Year Award sells on ebay for $200

Not sure who bought it, but the winning user was GrittyGardy35.

A tip of the cap to the Royals Corner message board for this one: Tony Peña’s 2003 AL Manager of the Year award sold on eBay for $200 last week.

The item description noted “a few small nicks on edges,” but otherwise, “mint condition.” When contacted about how the item was secured, the seller, based in Massachusetts, e-mailed only that “this item was on consignment. I do not have any further info.”

Wow, an award statue! Oh, it's just a Manager of the Year.

Wonder whether he delivered it to the buyer from in his crouch.

Angel Berroa and Bob Hamelin now see the chance to fund one more coke binge.

Dude, really? Someone should have done a better job advertising that, because there is no way I wouldn't go way higher than that, and there are a bunch of people with a lot more money than me. Fail to whomever the seller was.

Heh, reminds me of when Homer tries to flush Dr. Haing S. Ngor's Oscar down the toilet and the toilet won't take it.

No kidding. You put that up for bid and limit it to only BTF members and I guarantee you get 4 figures for it. If it's the real thing I probably go over $500.

There's a market for counterfeit Manager of the Year awards? Who knew?

Yeah, I'd have gone to $500... I'm not much of a collector, but it would be pretty cool to have an MLB annual award on my mantle.

This sounds kind of sketch. The seller didn't say how he got it. It doesn't seem like something Pena would just give away. And he was willing to sell it for just $200. It feels like a fake.

That begs the question.. how come it's not in Tony Pena's hands? Did he have to pay for his son's weak bat or something?

EDIT: I owe Dewitty Pun a coke. At least, I think that's what the BBTF bylaws state.

Here is the actual auction. If you'd known about it last week you could've "Bought It Now" for $450.

Here's the auction.

I don't see any indication in the auction description of a Certificate of Authenticity or anything of that nature.

The seller "sportsandtoyscd" has a 99% feedback rating. The auction itself mentions "Dan Dunn Collectibles." I dunno if that is the same entity as sportsandtoyscd. This blog seems skeptical about the authenticity of some Lizzie Borden¹ memorabilia sold by Mr. Dunn². Obviously, I'm in no position myself to evaluate such claims.

It should be easy enough for anyone with connections to get Tony Pena on the phone and see if he still has the thing...

¹ To fill in all you baseball fans, she was kinda like Marty Bergen. Or Steve Garvey.
² It is probably fair to assume that anyone named "Dunn" hates baseball.

Lizzie Borden's more like Cesar Cedeno, huh?

Looks like Hal McRae threw a phone at it.

To be fair, though, anyone with a printer can make a Certificate of Authenticity.

Once when I was probably 13 years old I went down to the local card store and bought a Felix Potvin autographed puck for like $10. The store owner just whipped out a sheet of paper with "Certificate of Authenticity" across the top, filled in "Felix Potvin" in one blank space and signed his name in another and handed it to me with the puck.

If he had the Good Face, then it was probably legit.

How do you autograph a puck? With white-out?

Well, that's fine, but the seller here wasn't even promising that much ;)

I know a dog could "autograph" a puck for you...maybe Potvin did the same thing.
