UPDATE: Baseball America - Draft 2007: First-Round Review
“I’m just glad it promotes the sport,” Gammons said after a Wednesday night rehearsal in The Milk House with fellow Draft commentators Karl Ravech and Steve Phillips. “There were years when the clubs would announce their first-round picks, then not tell you for a week and a half who was taken in the other rounds.
“It just shows that baseball really got what they never got before, which is to promote young talent. David Stern did that with the NBA. Bud Selig is doing that now, with guys like (Jose) Reyes and (David) Wright. They said, ‘Wait a minute, we should be selling our young players, too.’ Throw a guy like (Grady) Sizemore in there, too. Today’s group of players under 27 is the best of any in that age group in the last 35 years. Without a doubt. Now young talent is really being showcased.”

Only much more quiet.
I didn't say so, but the players in the independent leagues would be available in the draft not as free agents and would make up the bulk of the draft class. Anyway, there are alot of problems with the idea, I was just throwing it out there...
The Rays don't need 4:30 to pick Price

Gah, is MLB/ESPN asking teams to run the clock down the whole way to allow for ads and TV analyst time?
Maybe they were working the phones for a trade.
Kidding.
But those players will be drafted anyway. They might get drafted a little earlier under the 1 minor league team system, but they'd still be drafted. And you'd probably see a couple more guys rushed, and that's not good for anyone. Like you said, that's not an improvement.
It makes sense. How fun would it be to have a new pick every minute and no time to hear about the guy who was just picked?
Good thing...I'll enjoy hearing them talk about the prospects for a few minutes. 15 minutes like the NFL is way too much, but five seems pretty good.

Now that its going, the time is flying by and I'm loving the between pick time. It was just my anticipation for the draft starting with Price's pick that made me antsy
ANd what did Gammons say about Phillips uncle? I missed it
Always draft on talent. Worry about position later. You can always trade someone if you end up with too many guys at one position.
BTW, Moustakas was not a signability pick at all, and he'll push Gload off first while Gordon plays 3B and Butler is a DH.
I know it's a stunning concept to try and build a fanbase in Central and Southwest MO.. but they might want to spend some of their later picks on some MU and SMS players.
Actually, he was, sort of, in that Porcello was asking way more than the Royals were willing to pay. Moustakas's demands, even though he's also a Boras client, have been much more reasonable.
-- MWE
Not if Scott Boras has anything to say about it.
I don't have a problem with this pick. Shealy is a stop-gap at 1st base, and Butler is a DH. I like the fact that the Royals are stocking up on hitters rather than going with high-risk high school pitchers.
Excuse me while I go and shoot myself.
Everything I've read for years has been that NJ HS baseball is considered a rather high level of competition.
He may do that, but that doesn't mean he wasn't a signability pick. He was a legit top 5-10 talent, but he wasn't the second best player in the draft
"Always draft on talent. Worry about position later. You can always trade someone if you end up with too many guys at one position."
Indeed, especially if you are picking a high school kid. He will be in the minors for the next 2-4 years, if not more, so you don't know what your big league situation will look like then.
By the way Pirates fans, as long as they don't plan on making him a reliever long-term, don't bemoan the Moskos pick too much. Hes got good stuff, great arm and could be a lot better once he gets used to being a starter.
And hes got relatively low mileage for a college arm
It's OK. If I wanted to root for a team that knew what it was doing, I'd pick... anybody else, really.
In general its one of the top cold-weather states. Not close to what a kid from CA, AZ, FL, GA or TX faces, but pretty good.
Of course, in any state, the level of play can vary alot based on conference and classification.
Seton Hall, IIRC, plays a pretty good schedule including showdowns with top out-of-state teams
Excuse me while I go and shoot myself.
You remind me of myself when I watch the NFL draft.
In summary:
* The entire organization is in immediate-win mode, so they are inclined to pick short-term polish and almost immediate payoff (a la Brandon Morrow) over long-term prospects. That means college pitching a la Arkansas LHP Nick Schmidt, whom David labels a "left-handed Joe Blanton."
* M's organization/business types get involved in 1st round selection, then let the baseball men manage 2nd round and later.
* The three big-name Boras draftees absolutely won't be selected if they are available. This isn't Bill Bavasi's call (he has signed Boras free-agent clients in the past), but the organization/business types are friends of Bud and are aligned with his goal to contain signing costs.
* David is very down on the M's prospects after last year and this. Last year the team intentionally passed up Lincecum and Andrew Miller despite being clearly better pitching prospects than Morrow, and Morrow's success in this year's major league bullpen makes them more likely to do the same thing this year, ultimately turning their top-rank draft pick into a fungible reliever.
He's 290 pounds?
He actually managed to go (relatively) unhyped as far as top 5 picks go because of the huge amount of hype guys like Porcello and MOustakas are getting.
-- MWE
Oddly enough, that wasn't the rep on Morrow when he was picked. He was a big-time arm who was raw for a college pitcher but had a high ceiling.
I wish Callis and Rawnsley got more airtime
Nothing, really. He does have a quality fastball and a nasty slider, along with a developing curve and change that in part led to his move to the rotation. But his command isn't especially good, he didn't have a really good season, and there are still people who think that he profiles better as a reliever. That's not really what the Pirates need right now.
-- MWE
Okay, that I get ... I'm just trying to gauge how people like us compare various prospects to one another, and can make assertions comparing guys like Moskos and Moustakas that they've only scarcely seen.
-- MWE
Can't say I'd be excited about that if I was a Brewers fan. That being say Jack Z knows a few thousand times more than I do about this sort of thing.
Even though hes a Boras client, hes still got to be a bit of a signability guy since hes a college senior
Wonder-what-Prince-will-think...
He's a short college reliever with ugly mechanics. I'm convinced that his time in the pen is the only thing that kept him healthy long enough to get drafted. I also think that he's going to mysteriously lose some of his FB velocity once they try to make him a full-time starter, and he'll eventually need to be moved back into the pen (or become a bottom-of-the-rotation guy).
I wanted someone with at least a glimmer of upside.
Me too, Mike. I wanted a bat, but I could've lived with Detwiler if he'd been the choice.
what a mark for himself
-- MWE
When is the last time 2 seniors went in the top 10?
If the Yankees get him, I would be very much in fear of reading stories for the next 15 years about the hometown kid with the big arm who grew up rooting for the Yankees. If Bill Madden knew there was a baseball draft, he would have a spontaneous orgasm.
The next few months, after picking LaPorta, would seem like a good time to play ball a little harder with him.
Even if you don't want to replace Fielder with LaPorta (i sure as hell wouldn't) it might give you a little leverage
That was my thought. Of course, besides those turkeys, I've been very impressed with the draft coverage so far. Thankfully they aren't trying to go the spectacle route.
Casey Weathers, who also would have been attractive as a college closer, was just picked by Colorado. Perhaps SEA and COL think that middle relief/setup work is such a high-profile job in MLB, perhaps it's the new undervalued skill and deserves high draft status.
no.
Same here. For a prep school pitcher he's more polish than potential. It's nice to see.
Who's his press agent Joey Belle?
If your spacebar is screwing you try selecting a space in a post and Crtl-C it and then Crtl-V it every time you need a space. Just an idea.
Mayo alluded to "going through alot growing up". Aumont lives with guardians and won't discuss his biological parental situation with anyone
--a team that looks to at minimum contend for a few years in a blah division
--your offense consists of solo home runs
--the other legit talent available was high school grade which puts it out 3-5 years
--Fielder is a wonderful hitting talent who also has his own gravitational field and therefore an injury risk at all times as he may attract nearby comets
--Jenkins is in his last year, Mench is perpetual trade bait, and possible outfield answers in the minors are having issues
--Braun is adapting to third and why create problems for the lad by moving him to the outfield and possibly hurting his offensive development?
I will give the Z-man and Melvin a pass on this one. Considering the context it makes some sense. By all accounts the lad can legitimately hit.
