2007 Draft (Day 1) Thread - 2 PM EDT on ESPN2 and MLB.com

UPDATE: Baseball America - Draft 2007: First-Round Review

“I’m just glad it promotes the sport,” Gammons said after a Wednesday night rehearsal in The Milk House with fellow Draft commentators Karl Ravech and Steve Phillips. “There were years when the clubs would announce their first-round picks, then not tell you for a week and a half who was taken in the other rounds.

“It just shows that baseball really got what they never got before, which is to promote young talent. David Stern did that with the NBA. Bud Selig is doing that now, with guys like (Jose) Reyes and (David) Wright. They said, ‘Wait a minute, we should be selling our young players, too.’ Throw a guy like (Grady) Sizemore in there, too. Today’s group of players under 27 is the best of any in that age group in the last 35 years. Without a doubt. Now young talent is really being showcased.”

MLB.com: Draft is game’s big day, growing bigger

A catch-all thread for the day’s activities.

Yup. There's no way that actually sells Old Spice, but it's a tremendous ad.

I'm currently watching and praying for someone to take Porcello. Who's left with draft money? Rangers at 17, c'mon...

I think the more likely problem would be him attracting too many donuts or double cheeseburgers, but yeah, comets would be bad too.

According to a guy in the comments of Brew Crew Ball who claims to have a source inside the Brewers, they're going to try LaPorta in LF. Has anyone here seen him play? Think this could work? If so, this could be a good pick.

Goldtein at BPro said that LaPorta in LF is "Kittle or Custesque"...

Heyward: physically similar to Fred McGriff.

Oddly, he's only the second player taken in this draft to be compared to a player of color.

Heyward is one of the least surprising picks so far. It was going to be him, Smoker or Main by all accounts, with Heyward being the most likely
   232. CFBF Hates Hyphens Posted: June 07, 2007 at 06:28 PM (#2396432)
"Has anyone here seen him play?"

I have, and I think he's an underrated defensive first baseman. He's suffered a lot of injuries over the last two years, and I wouldn't be optimistic about his LF defense, but he gets a bad rap when people talk about him as a sluggardly iron-glove.

--a team that looks to at minimum contend for a few years in a blah division
--your offense consists of solo home runs
--the other legit talent available was high school grade which puts it out 3-5 years
--Fielder is a wonderful hitting talent who also has his own gravitational field and therefore an injury risk at all times as he may attract nearby comets
--Jenkins is in his last year, Mench is perpetual trade bait, and possible outfield answers in the minors are having issues
--Braun is adapting to third and why create problems for the lad by moving him to the outfield and possibly hurting his offensive development?

I will give the Z-man and Melvin a pass on this one. Considering the context it makes some sense. By all accounts the lad can legitimately hit.

And if LaPorta works out, they can deal Fielder for something useful, like they did with Lyle Overbay.

Sorry to bug the experts, but what do people think the Tigers will do? I haven't done much homework what with the Tigers not having a high pick in the first time since forever... I would hope they tried an upgrade at C, 1B, SS, or 3B, as that is where our starters aging and system thin. Someone at DTW is recommending Todd Frazier, the mock I've seen has us with Alderson...

Any thoughts on what Detroit could, should, and may do would be much appreciated...

They haven't selected a Georgia player in the first round since Francouer. They do tend to focus on Southerners, though; the last time they went outside the South in round 1 was for Scott Thorman, a Canadian, in 2000.

I don't think Fielder goes anywhere unless he eats a bank and decides he wants seconds when he's a free agent in 4 years

No way would I do that, unless Fielder's money demands are impossible.
That would be a huge talent dropoff

Last year they nabbed Andrew Miller, a top 3 talent dropping becuase of money, indicating that they don't mind paying a top talent.

He's a senior with very little recourse other than to sign. Ie, no major league deal, so they can stick him at AAA for a year after he's ready a la Ryan Howard if they decide their best course of action is to trade Fielder and play LaPorta.

Sure, and I wouldn't even say their hand will be "forced". They can sit back and play the waiting game, and if they don't get a great offer for Fielder, they can just try LaPorta in left (again assuming he works out).

Having two good-hitting first basemen in your system is a nice problem to have.

The White Sox MO over the past few years is to take someone like Nick Schmidt, a college starter with not much upside but a good chance to make the majors as a 3-4 starter.

Right now, I'm hoping for (in this order): Porcello (pipe dream), Smoker, Main, Harvey, Burgess. Is signability keeping Harvey from being drafted?
   290. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 07, 2007 at 07:06 PM (#2396506)
The question about Arencibia is whether or not he's going to be able to stay behind the plate. He doesn't throw well, largely because of poor mechanics.
