From what I've read elsewhere, it sounds like he would be Tony Clark's backup. I guess the Yankees don't think Clark can play everyday.

Since they seem to be going for the "fossil movement" maybe they want Franco and Stanton.

Not that the Yankees should go after him, but what happened to Olerud? Is anyone interested in him?
   4. Strasburg is here (Joey B.)  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 03:35 PM (#761195)
I think there were some teams interested in Olerud, but the word was that he wasn't interested in moving far away from his family as a rental, even for just a short time.

If only Travis Lee didn't hurt his shoulder.

When is Japan's season over? Fernando, come back

Awww, isn't that sweet. Fred would come full circle in his career.
   7. SG  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 03:49 PM (#761234)
Maybe the Yankees should just activate the hitting coach, he's probably got as much left as McGriff.

I believe Olerud isn't interested in re-locating, especially to come east. The Yankees would be better off bringing up Andy Phillips. He's may not be much, but he's already in the organization.
   8. Srul Itza  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 03:50 PM (#761235)
If Fred gets #500 in a Yankee uniform at the stadium, does he get a plaque on the wall?

You know, try the third base coach too. I bet he could play some first.

Eric Karros of the .554 OPS is available.

There's no way they sign him, right? Right?
   13. Organizational Projectability (1k5v3L)  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 04:13 PM (#761284)
Fido McCoke-Fiend could serve the same role with NYY as Zeile with the Mutts: an excellent relief pitcher when the team is out of the game. Oh wait, they've got Heredia for that already... My bad.

I almost hope they do....

GO LUXURY TAX GO!

If they're going to bring back former Yankee prospects, they could probably stand to call Jose Rijo.

He's only two years older than McGriff.
   17. jwb  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 04:19 PM (#761307)
Let's see. . . Fred McGriff can't
- Hit for average
- Hit for power
- Run
- Field
Can he throw or is he a zero tool player?
   18. Neil  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 04:21 PM (#761313)
Mike Sweeney is a good hitter.......
.....
.....

Byron Gettis is a fair prospect...

I'll give them up both for... nothing? As long as the Yankees take on Sweeney's salary?
   19. Neil  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 04:21 PM (#761315)
Oh shucks I forgot about that darned trade clause.
   20. Hendry's Wad of Cash (UCCF)  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 04:25 PM (#761323)
Eric Karros of the .554 OPS is available.

But not for long. If the Yanks want him, they'd better ring him up before the guy who reads the papers to Dusty lets him know that his trusty veteran first baseman is back on the market.

Wonder how hard it would be for Dusty to justify giving Karros a start a week over Lee?

I've been waiting for a Primer thread about his release. A nice "saberist" vs. "troll" thread would transpire...

Can he throw or is he a zero tool player?

Given that he's been a first baseman his whole career, I'm guessing that throwing isn't high on his list of skills.

But he does have the tool of being able to pack the stands once he hits 499 sometime in 2007. Then the celebration when he hits 500 in 2011 should be something, what with the buildup and all.
   23. Tony B  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 04:30 PM (#761344)

Already making up derogatory names for him? The funniest thing about this are the responses of Yankee fans. If the Yankees do sign McGriff, he'll serve the same role Todd Zeile did with the Yanks last year: whipping boy.
   24. Tony B  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 04:35 PM (#761353)

Whatever happened with the rumored Sweeney to Seattle for Gil Meche and prospects trade? I thought that was a done deal. :) Seriously, if the Yankees can't get RJ maybe Sweeney would wave his no-trade.
   25. SG  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 04:36 PM (#761355)
Tony B, the last thing the Yankee fans need right now is another whipping boy. Between Wilson, Heredia, Sturtze, and Flaherty, the role is capably filled in both quantity and putridity.
   26. Roadblock Jones  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 04:36 PM (#761356)

Stanton for Heredia in an old-school crosstown veteran loogy scapegoat challenge trade.
   27. Neil  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 04:38 PM (#761360)
Apparently that deal might still have some life to it. Someone cancelled an interview between Meche and a radio station this morning. It's reported by KJF that Meche didn't cancel it and the AAA team didn't cancel it. Who knows what this means.
   28. SG  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 04:41 PM (#761365)
As odd as it seems, I wouldn't trade Heredia for Stanton. The good thing about Heredia is that Torre doesn't trust him, so he tries to avoid using him unless it's absolutely necessary. Torre would trust Stanton due to his past glory days, and he could be far more harmful going forward.
   29. Best Regards, Larry Mahnken  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 04:42 PM (#761370)
Heredia's not a scapegoat. He just sucks.
   30. Sean McNally  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 04:43 PM (#761372)
If the Yankees do sign McGriff, he'll serve the same role Todd Zeile did with the Yanks last year: whipping boy.

Then, by definition, I'll have to tell McGriff's kids that he stinks, and really -- I don't want to do that.
   31. North Side Chicago Expatriate Giants Fan  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 05:02 PM (#761422)
This really says more about Tony Clark than about McGriff... although Tony Clark has a .907 OPS vs. RHP, so I wonder why they would even consider it.

That said, I would like to see McGriff get to 500. Crime Dog was a quality player (while not HOF-caliber) for a long time and to see him so close and not get it would suck. It would also serve to discourage 500 from being an automatic ticket to the HOF.

He also had a .750 OPS last year and .858 the year before. Put him in a good lineup and he'll see strikes, so maybe he puts up a .750-.800 OPS in limited duty? Possibly? Not terrible for a bench guy. Plus he is a Proven Veteran™ right!!

Jerry: What's the matter with you?

Kramer: Steinbrenner! He's ruinin' my life...

Jerry: Oh yeah, Steinbrenner...

Kramer: I don't think I can take another season with him, Jerry. He'll

just trade away their best young prospects, just like he did with

Beuner, McGee, Drabek... McGriff...

Jerry: I know the list...

Well, that was levski, an Arizona fan. You read that right, Arizona has fans.
   34. Srul Itza  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 05:44 PM (#761492)
I hear Canseco is willing to try out.

And Ricky is available. He would play first. Just ask him.

If we are talking Zeile replacements, why settle for a substitute, when I am sure the Mets would be willing to let him go for the right price.
   35. Organizational Projectability (1k5v3L)  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 06:08 PM (#761540)
AZ does have fans, and not every one of them is a fair-weather fan like 99.9% of Yankee band-wagoners out there. Now, if you'll excuse me, I will go look at my autographed RJ jersey I got right after that 2001 WS game 7.

Btw, Fido McCoke-Fiend is a reference to an episode of "The family guy". A tough crowd here tonight. I'll wait until Strawberry resigns with the NYY before I use that line again. Or when Doc Gooden returns.

Yes, there were no fans in Arizona that stopped going to the games when they stunk, none. Ratings are the same, Attendance is the same. Not one bandwaggoner.
   37. Srul Itza  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 06:20 PM (#761560)
Hey, that't right. Strawberry's available! Move Bernie to first and bring back Straw as the DH.

Wouldn't 100% of bandwagoners be fair weather fans, by definition?
   39. Organizational Projectability (1k5v3L)  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 06:28 PM (#761581)
AZ has enjoyed a healthy attendance, for being in last place in all of baseball. And AZ has plenty of band-wagoners, no doubt. They are just nothing like the sheer number of Jeter-adoring blitering idiots that drop 50 bucks a ticket into big Stein's pocket to watch a game they don't even understand that well.
   40. Best Regards, Larry Mahnken  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 06:29 PM (#761583)
You're one objective dude, you know, levski?
   41. Organizational Projectability (1k5v3L)  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 06:30 PM (#761586)
I take pride in my objective view of the world. In fact, once the FCC forces Fox News to drop the "fair and balanced" banner, I'm gonna trade-mark it.
   42. Booey  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 06:42 PM (#761608)
I hope McGriff does get to 500, but for different reasons than those suggested in post #32. Crime Dog DOES belong in Cooperstown, and if it takes a major milestone for some shortsighted voters to realize it, so be it.

He's also close to 2500 hits and 1600 rbi's, which added together may be hard to ignore...
   43. Weekly Journalist_  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 07:19 PM (#761728)
Man, the Yankees could sure use Hee-Seop Choi right now.
   44. Weekly Journalist_  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 07:21 PM (#761732)
Maybe the Yankees could trade something to the A's for Erubiel Durazo. What do the A's need? How about Lofton.
   45. Weekly Journalist_  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 07:22 PM (#761737)
You know who else...Adrian Gonzales. He's being blocked be Teixeira anyway. Texas doesn't need him.
   46. Weekly Journalist_  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 07:24 PM (#761744)
Carlos Pena maybe.
   47. Ziggy  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 09:31 PM (#762360)
What's so special about 4100?
   48. Eric in Madison  Posted: July 28, 2004 at 11:03 PM (#762571)
Well, if you ask nice, you could have Doug Mientkiewicz, and it won't even cost you much. We'll even throw in Joe Mays for your staff next year.

I know its generous, but we know how much the Yankees need the help.

Really, there's no catch here. I know its hard to believe, but its all true, and all yours for the asking. Just pick up the phone and dial 1-800-CPOHLAD. Do it today.

We'll give you Danny deVito in a sign-and-trade.
