25 years later, Lee Elia’s rant lives on

Elia was the Cubs manager who snapped after a loss in 1983 and launched a tirade filled with F-bombs.  You can click here to hear the real deal, but just be forewarned that it’s about as profanity-laced as a bachelor party for drunken sailors.

Probably the most damaging words were in reference to the Cubs’ weekday audiences.  Wrigley had yet to install night lights, and all Cub games were still daytime affairs. Firing a salvo at fans who had booed the Cubs’ 5-14 start, Elia said, “85% of the world is working.  The other 15 come out here.”

Rip them [expletive]. Rip them country [expletive] like the [expletive] players. We got guys busting their [expletive] [expletive], and them [expletive] people boo. And that's the Cubs? My [expletive] [expletive]. They talk about the great [expletive] support that players get around here. I haven't seen it this [expletive] year.

I might change my handle to "My [expletive][expletive]"

Gordon Wittenmyer had this nice piece on The Elia Rant a few days ago. I might've submitted it, but I figured the interest outside of Chicago was limited.

As a community service, it would be wonderful if the Wrigley Corp. could sponsor a playground for the cocksuckers.

Leyland had some good rants, but this is sheer genius.

I've got -- and have had for a years -- an MP3 of this tirade loaded into my iPod.... it made it's way in when I did an initial dump of my PC's catalog into it and for some reason, I've always resisted the urge to delete it.

You've had the urge to delete it? What in the name of god's green earth why?

Peer pressure, I guess... It does make for a good conversation piece --- when it's plugged in to someone's speakers as background music, and suddenly, everyone hears Lee thundering "I'll tell you one ####### thing, I hope we get hotter than #### just to stuff it up the ass of those..."

We (little kids too) were all sitting around checking out my dad's new digital picture frame after I d/l'ed some pix to it, and the Earl Weaver thing had apparently made its way on there (as it also took MP-3s). Boy was my face red.

Elia was on Coppock's show Saturday morning and talked for a long time about the rant. He was actually really classy about it (as classy as one could be about a f#$%ing profanity-laced tirade). He talked for a long time and I thought, considering he has to be tired of that being his legacy, was quite nice about the whole thing.

Give the guy credit: he was one of the very few Cubs managers who got another job after flaming out on the north side.

It's obviously gone viral now - and I could very well be wrong - but for the longest time in the pre-everything-is-on-the-internet early 90s, I think Les Grobstein was the keeper of the best recording of the tirade.

I miss the Grobber.

Ex-Cubs managers do better than you think. Dusty, obviously, has landed a job. Baylor is out of work now (as far as I know) but coached for the Mets for a few years. Kimm was a White Sox coach after the Cubs fired him. Lachemann has coached for Seattle and Oakland (I think he's still there). Trebelhorn is still coaching in Baltimore. Riggleman coached for a year in Cleveland. Essian has managed in the minors. Altobelli has been doing radio for the Rochester Red Wings for years. Zimmer coached in Boston and for the Yankees before joining the Tampa mafia with Michael. As a group, they've done ok, or at least have been other opportunities to flame out.
