38 Pitches: Schilling: Character test incoming.

Uh-oh...If Schilling starts rambling about “The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yankee Way of Knowledge”...I’m outta here!

Ouch. I certainly envisioned the start on Sunday ending in a much different manner than it did, but it didn’t. For those second guessing anything, from me being in the game to my throwing a ‘hanging’ fastball, don’t. At 69 pitches I was fine, it came down to two horribly executed split fingered fastballs that both got whacked. I had Jason in a spot to do a bunch of different things to end the AB, and didn’t. Same with Derek. Two strikes and a litany of options, none of them being a split hanging on the inside corner.

...We made no excuses and have none, it’s on us. We’ll find out over the next 9 games who we are and what we’re made of. We played ourselves into this cushion and we’re at the point of using it up. Tip your hat to the Yanks for playing as well as they have too, regardless of how well anyone has done they’ve put themselves into this position by answering the bell when they needed to.

I would tell you we’ll do the same. We’ll right the ship starting tomorrow and get after it from there.

John Cena would have never hung that splitter. Unlike Curt, John Cena has the character and heart to overcome any circumstances, including having his dad getting his S!@# kicked by some d-bag who took a dump in some chick's gymbag.

agree. it would be insane to have pulled him there.

it came down to two horribly executed split fingered fastballs that both got whacked.

i havn't seen him throw many splits this year. i think he's lost confidence in it, and rightfully so ... he doesn't have enough velocity to be a fastball/split pitcher any more.

Wow. Outspoken without insulting or offending anyone. Well done.

"Character tests" are always easier against teams like the Devil Rays. The Padres character test against the Pirates and Giants went well.

I just bought that book last weekend. Haven't read it yet though.

Hmm. Schilling had a "litany of options" against Jeter, huh.

So many choices that he to discuss them with Varitek, not once, not twice but three times on the mound.

Yes, he certainly had Jeter on the ropes, a guy hitting over .430 with 2 outs and runners in scoring position. It's amazing Jeter even wanted to continue to battle.

What was Schill's litany of options, exactly? A 88 mph fastball, a 80 mph splitter, a hanging curve?

No Jeter had nothing to do with it after both fouling off and taking 7 pitches.

A dumb person would say Jeter did a fine job of hitting and basically crushed the only pitch Schill had left in a declining arsenal.

But that person would be wrong. No Schill has all hitters at their mercy, and it's only because of the rare mistake that they ever score on 38 pitches.com.

I'm pretty sure Schilling is saying that he so poorly executed the option they chose that any lesser option would have been better. And I agree. Doesn't mean he wouldn't have screwed up the execution of those options, but I get what he's saying.

I don't think he was implying Jeter would've been an automatic out under a litany of options. I find that interpretation to be a pretty big reach. You're effectively claiming that Schilling thinks others only have success when he lets them, conveniently skipping over the "Tip your hat to the Yanks... they’ve put themselves into this position by answering the bell when they needed to" quote to do so.

Schilling can be a self-absorbed windbag, but you picked the wrong opportunity to make the point.

Yeah I think he realizes Jeter is a good hitter

Any pitcher is going to feel like he lost a chance for an out if he gets a guy to two srtikes and he gets a big hit

I'm not saying Schilling should bend over backwards to give a compliment to Jeter or anyone else.
But to anyone who saw that at bat, actually watched it live, I don't see how they theorize Schilling had a litany of options against Jeter, who had fought off every pitch fron his repetoire.
Schiiling had pretty much dominated the rest of the Yankees line-up to that point with good location. I know it's not in a pitcher's DNA to give a hitter credit, But Jeter won a battle, he wasn't given a 3-0 meatball.

And yes, Schilling is an enormous windbag.

He was given a meatball. It just wasn't 3-0.
