38 Pitches: Schilling: Free Agency? Weird.

Thanks to Coco Crispix Attacks for coming across this…

The list of teams that our family has talked over, that we think would be a fit for next year, should we not come back, are pretty much teams in cities we agree would be ok for our last year, and teams I think have a legitimate shot at being in the post season and/or World Series. Teams we didn’t include aren’t for any one reason. There are a million little things that go into this from stadiums to school districts to travel to spring training to etc. etc. etc. but the list represents the teams after Boston that have some of the off the field things that are big to us, plus the potential to go into October next year.

Cleveland, Detroit, Anaheim, New York Mets, Philadelphia, Atlanta, L.A., S.D., Arizona, Chicago Cubs, St. Louis, Milwaukee.

Curt Schilling calls them Anaheim, not the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Orange County, California, USA, North America, Planet Earth, Sol System, Milky Way, Universe!

My respect for Curt Schilling has just gone up.

Wait, why is Boston not in the list? So he's not coming back for sure?

I love the immediacy of the baseball situation. Man, this already fun. Baseball 24/7/365.

Detroit? Wow. Things sure do change don't they. How many free agents would have had Detroit on their wish list 2 years ago? Then toss in Milwaukee and Philadelphia and things sure do change. Though Philly is probably a sentimental pick for Curt and family. The philly media loved hearing Mrs. Schilling yell at Mr. Schilling and usually acted like a lapdog for her.

I did. He said "should we not be back". This just sounds diplomatic.

One of these things is not like the other ones... One of these things is not the same...

So Curt Schilling probably hasn't studied every team's future outlook in great detail. Big deal. To most observers, the Cardinals probably look like a very strong club - they won the World Series in '06, lost in the World Series in '04 (Schilling probably remembers this one), won 100 games in the intervening year, and had a down year this past season, but were riddled with injuries. They still have Pujols, Edmonds, Rolen, Carpenter... some big "name players."

On NESN's ticker, it said that Schilling had said he'd only want a one-year deal to come back to Boston. He should be signed ASAP if that's the case. The Red Sox need another starter and there's not a better pitcher, particularly one who will come at such reasonable contract.

Yep, one of those teams has won a world series in the past 4 years...

If he is willing to sign to a one-year contract, it should be an easy negotiation as long as the Sox don't try to lowball him. I don't think he'd be expecting any significant raise (if any) over last season.

Theo: 1/11?
Curt: 1/15?
Theo: Middle?
Curt: Middle.

I think he's even said he wants to be extended at his 2007 salary. The question isn't years or dollars.

The question is if they want to give Lester a rotation spot.

By the way, this is actually a pretty cool blog entry to read guys for more than the intro. This is the first time Schilling has been a free agent, and also he's doing it without an agent.

Agreed. I think it would be incredibly cool if he continued this throughout the process, though I imagine most GMs frown on that.

I could live with this. Bye-bye Tim and Dougie.

You know, I've been pretty down on Schilling (as a self-important blowhard; he's a hell of a pitcher) for a while, but I'm starting to come around. The standard discourse for professional athletes is so dull that any sign of life is welcome. And Schilling, even when he says stupid things, is at least NOT mouthing the idiot sports cant.

Plus, he's a nerd. Gotta give the man props for that.

I just read that Curt wrote "good-bye" letters to his teammates.

It's like that farewell party they had for Daisuke at Seibu. He's not coming back.

Interesting that the Cubs are there but not the White Sox. Somewhat interesting that only 3 AL teams are ... but outside the Sox/Yanks, those are the only 3 likely to make the playoffs and with the money for Schilling (i.e. not the A's most likely though flushing, oh, $12 M on one year of Schilling can't be any worse than flushing $8 or 9 or however many M it was on one year of Piazza ... really, Beane needs to start clearing these deals through me first. :-)

Interesting that Cleveland and Detroit are there ... suggests "competitive" is a lot more important than those other factors he mentioned.

The Mets look like the most logical/likely fit -- pretty desperate for starting pitching, money, good offense, pitchers park.

Pedro and Curt back together would be pretty badass.

They should give him an H3. Worked for the Yankees!

Interesting that the Cubs are there but not the White Sox.

I noted that too. But if he's primarily interested in a contender, I can see how he'd pick the Cubs over the Sox.

That's crazy. You keep signing Wakefield until his arm falls off or he retires. I don't care if he's a $4 million dollar swingman who makes 5-7 spot starts a year; that contract is the best in baseball (not counting pre-arb players). Lester and Buchholtz are not going to make 30+ starts each next year- neither of them have ever done it, and they're both young enough that the team isn't going to push them for 200 innings. Wakefield remains extremely valuable.

Pedro and Curt back together would be pretty badass.

Curt badmouthed Pedro pretty badly on the latter's way out. Personally, I'm done with baseball if the Mets sign him.

Resign Curt for any reasonable one year deal, which he does seem interested in. Go with 6 starters heading into spring training; with two very young and two very old there will be plenty of innings for everyone. This is a much easier call than Lowell I think.

Also, did a player just list on his blog the teams he's willing to play for?
