After 100 days, Ryan is proving patience is a wiing [sic] formula

Nolan ... was invited by Bobby Valentine’s Chiba team one night to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Before Ryan took the mound, however, Valentine informed him that his Japanese hosts expected the Hall of Fame pitcher to bring the heat.

Dressed in street shoes, therefore, and though he hadn’t thrown a baseball in earnest in more than 10 years, Nolan Ryan, at age 60, walked to the mound halfway around the world and let the not-so-ceremonial first pitch fly.

The pitch registered 85 mph on the radar gun.

What Walt means is, if Ryan had not run out of Preparation H on his flight to Japan, he would have lit the radar gun up to 94, minimum.

Also:

and though he hadn’t thrown a baseball in earnest in more than 10 years

Is that correct? I thought Ryan had been doing some throwing at spring training camps the first few years after he retired (at what, 47?), and occasionally aired it out.

The pitch registered 85 mph on the radar gun

And then the gun flickered and read "185."

What the article doesn't mention is that in Japan it's customary to have a batter step into the box and make a swing and miss at the pitch. For Ryan's pitch, Valentine stepped in. Ryan's pitch was up and in, knocking Valentine on his ass.

Here's the video.
