ajc: Bradley: Glavine is not the answer (RR)

Sudden Notrytis Glavine rot...is sweeping the land.

They need a Nate Robertson (who had a bad year for Detroit but who still has gobs of potential), a Joe Blanton (who was mentioned in trade talks before the deadline and who won 14 games for the A’s), even a Shaun Marcum (who’s 26 and who won 12 games for Toronto but who’s facing minor knee surgery).

The Braves don’t need a one-year rental. They need to make a trade and invest in the long term. (Just because John Schuerholz and Bobby Cox are nearing the end doesn’t mean the franchise will fold once they’re gone.)

There was a time when any rotation would have been fortified by the addition of Tom Glavine. That time, sad to say, is past. He’s not what he was. He’s not what the Braves lack. He’d be more of what they already have.

I'm going to go ahead and call it: Edgar Renteria for Nate Robertson and salary relief, with some minor things on each side to balance it out. Escobar starts at short, Andruw walks, Braves sign Mike Cameron to a two-year deal. Braves win one division title before Teixeira heads to the northeast.

GLAVINE IS NOT YOUR SAVIOR!!!!!1111

Glavine has his strengths as he is probably not going to get hurt. That's valuable but there's only so many times a guy can re-invent himself. The k/9 dropped by 50%. Looks like teams have adjusted to the adjustments he made a couple of years ago.

Although I do not know what VORP is, I predict that Adam Eaton will produce more VORP than Tom Glavine next year.

Okay, we'll give you Blanton and Kurt Suzuki for Brian McCann.

Adam Eaton has won double-digit games 3 times in his career. We'll trade you him for that Escobar fellow. We'll even throw in Rod Barajas to replace McCann.

No, we won't.

I wonder if Schuerholz would be willing to dangle Kelly Johnson for Blanton. I'm not sure if I would but it's an interesting thought.

I'd rather trade Renteria for Robertson than pay Glavine. I think the odds are good that Robertson would be able to match whatever Glavine would put up -- 200 IP, 100 ERA+ or thereabouts -- for a modicum of the price. Dombrowski and Leyland had Renteria when they were with Florida. I think it's a natural fit for Edgar in Detroit.

Glavine was definitely the answer on Sunday. But you don't want to know the question. I doubt it would make it through the cybernanny, anyway.

What do the A's do with him? Move him back to short, or move Ellis there?

Can I interest you in a slightly-used Cliff Lee?

As an A's fan, just let me say that none of these Joe Blanton trades make sense. Who the hell is going to replace Balnton in the rotation if he gets traded? Dallas Braden? Dan Meyer? Shane Komine? Yech. It's becoming a source of amazement to me how underrated Blanton is on this board. In a world where Jason Marquis and Adam Eaton command multiple years for gazillions of dollars, a world in which Kyle Lohse is the top free agent pitcher, Joe Blanton's above average indestructibility at a locked up pre-arb price is very, very valuable. He's not going anywhere unless the A's are blown away by an offer resembling the Mulder trade.
