AJC: Braves reliever breaks hand punching door

Braves reliever Jeff Bennett broke a bone in his non-pitching hand when he punched a door near the dugout out of frustration during Wednesday night’s loss against the New York Yankees.

The right-hander, who has struggled for much of the season, was placed on the 15-day disabled list and left-hander Boone Logan was recalled from Class AAA Gwinnett to take his roster spot.

Bennett will have surgery to insert a pin in the break in his fifth metacarpal below the base of the pinky finger.

“I’m ashamed of myself,” he said after seeing the Braves’ hand specialist Thursday. “This is a professional sport; you handle yourself in a professional manner. I didn’t do that. … I’m just hopeful that [manager] Bobby [Cox] and [general manager] Frank [Wren] will give me another chance.

“A lot of things boiled up, and I didn’t handle the release of those very well.”

Thank you, Jeff Bennett.
A thousand times, thank you!

What an unselfish act of valor, realizing that the way he could best help the Braves was to make sure that Bobby Cox could no longer bring him into ball games.
Too bad it was the non-pitching hand...

Now if you really want to complete the job, just rip your elbow ligaments to shreds and turn your labrum into spaghetti and then we can try to forget that there ever was a Jeff Bennett on this baseball team.

Heh, can't exactly say I'm disappointed.

Perhaps Kawakami had a conversation with him about the nobility of sepuku.

Not sure Kawakami can speak what with that baseball embedded in his throat.

Bennett has been, how you say, not good this year.

I don't wish injury upon anyone but I don't feel bad about this.

Pete Abe says:
Meanwhile, you probably heard that Braves pitcher Jeff Bennett broke a bone in his left (non-pitching) hand when he punched a door on Wednesday night after giving up A-Rod’s two-run single in the sixth inning. But what you might not have heard is that Bennett pushed the broken bone back into place and pitched the seventh inning. That had to hurt. Bennett went on the DL yesterday and needs surgery.

... but I'm not sure if he's serious or not.

He is serious.

Ah, I see it's in the AJC article as well.

He punched a door and broke the fifth metacarpal on his glove hand. Basically, he broke his pinky on his left hand, right above the first knuckle, pushed it back into place (crudely) and put the glove on to pitch the next inning. Had to hurt like hell but he's probably happy he didn't have to field anything that inning. A liner back to the mound would have been excruciating.

I like Jeff Bennett whenever he's not on the mound.

Bennett and Carlyle were nice stories when they came up in 2007 (?). Yoeman minor league warriors getting a shot to contribute to a big league squad as 28 year olds. Pitched some quality innings. Helped the (bad) team be a little better. The league seems to have caught up to them for good, as it does for journeymen quad-A relievers. You don't revel in their misfortune, both out of empathy for them as humans and because, well, if they suck your team sucks. Bennett doesn't seem to be stupid. He knows his spot on a ML roster is tenuous at best, and he knows that if Boone Logan or Carlyle or Medlen pick up the slack while he's broken he's back to Richmond in a heartbeat. You feel for him. But he wasn't getting anyone out. He's done the team a favor they couldn't bring themselves to do (probably waiting for Carlyle to come off of the DL to make that move.)

He'd probably find Richmond to be a little lonely.

But how is the door doing?

But how is the door doing?

Chipped paint and a dented knob.Braves are optimistic that the door will be back in 4 to 6 weeks. Will be in rehab at an office in Alpharetta before returning to clubhouse.
Also, Chipper Jones placed on DL with door same day with similar injuries.
